Re: [Zope-dev] ZTK futures: one big package?

2009-05-13 Thread Tom Hoffman
The implementation details are over my head, but what SchoolTool needs
is a middle ground between one big package and a giant pile of little
ones, because our primary deployment strategy is via Linux
distribution packaging, in Debian/Ubuntu in particular.

Currently, Fabio maintains an official monolithic package for Debian,
and we generate a giant pile of .debs from eggs and keep them in a
PPA. Because there is administrative overhead with every package,
even if we can eventually come to consensus on the desirability or
pushing 70 tiny packages into the Debian pipeline, it may never be
practical.

So a single, community-recognized ZTF that would be the foundation of
manageable packaging for Linux distros would be a huge win for us.

  Eg.

  Current name Proposed name

  Zope2- Zope
Zope3, the libraries - Zope libraries
  Zope3 the appserver - Frobnozz

Isn't this release sort of the last of its kind, though? Kind of a
weird time for a name change

Or if not, it would seem like there would be a better argument for the
new approach having a new name than the old one.

I'm not sure which is the new approach and which is the old one?

Well, given that this is a very, very late, long planned release
always called Zope 3.4, I'd like to see it come out ASAP without
further delay for semantic and philosophical argument.

Then we can figure out what to call the next one.

[Zope-dev] Zope 3.4 final?

2008-01-31 Thread Tom Hoffman
Hi All,

This is a manually-generated reminder that it would be very, very
helpful to the SchoolTool project if there would be a Zope 3.4 final
release in the next month. 3.4.0b2 is designated as stable on
zope.org, and while it may only be a semantic distinction to remove
the b2, it will allow us to move zope3 packages into Debian and
Ubuntu, and in turn move a whole stack of other Zope3 related
packages, and SchoolTool, into those distributions.

Thanks for your consideration,

Tom Hoffman
