you could set the package on hold
opkg flag=hold packagename
that should drevent updating the package, i'd think.

I am running ASU on my FreeRunner.
After an 'opkg update' today, I did a 'opkg -test upgrade'. And opkg
still wants to install a Neo1973 kernel on my FreeRunner:
