Jemalloc comes with a handful of very useful allocator
profiling/diagnostic capabilities, that will be extremely useful when
trying to debug some memory leak in a running production application. In
order to do this, it is needed that jemalloc is buil
issue.
Therefore anyone else encountering the same problem is strongly
encouraged to upgrade his kernel to a kernel version >= 2.6.38

Sorry,
I forgot to mention that we are running debian squeeze (stable) on a
freshly installed system. So the bug seems to still be there in the
stable kernel, and not just in the backported one.
