Deleting the file from nautilus works for me, but trying to delete it from EOG
does NOT work.
Using EOG 2.18.0.1 on Ubuntu Feisty.

Fixed
It was the automatic orientation that was messed up. Trying to manipulate
images sing exif data and if there was no exif data, it would crash.
