HI
I have deleted the juk mail from the junk folder and expunged the folder. the
properties of the folder still show 583 mail.
When I empty trash, the mail moves back to the junk folder.

Thank you for the tip. I had not deleted first. I did not realise
that "Expunge" worked only on the "Deleted" folder.

With Junk folder 'open' - displayed on screen - the folder does not
clear its contents when 'expunge' is called by a single mouse click in
the drop-down menu. It does not clear either when the indicated
keystroke is used.
