Finally a workaround was posted on Launchpad. I've been battling this
bug for 11 months:
#sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
#Add the following lines

How do I tell if this Lenovo M58p has Intel GMA4500 ?
Wily and Xenial linux images badly garble screen.
Installed this from Ubuntu Kernels on top of Xenial:
Bug also present on Wily but worse.

I've also found the same bug in Vivid Vervet, my background is
distorted, changing the background picture occasionally makes the image
stabilize. After rebooting the image is distorted unless the mode is
set to the following modes: Tile the image to fill the entire monitor
area, Centered unscaled
** No longer affects: ubuntu-mate

Is there any progress on this? Is there any temporary workaround?

With the latest kernel update 3.19.0-20 the hashing is worst then ever.
I am using variety for wallpaper changing and now on every wallpaper
change there is a hashing. I have to manualy change the wallpaper
multiple times to get to normal view. And of course the issue is not
only the wallpaper,

Eight times out of nine booted with normal wallpaper. Hashed once which was
readily fixed with command line:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
Booted 15.04 Mate .iso and the wallpaper was hashed. See attachment.
Installed Mate in another partition, booted, wallpaper hashed.
Rebooted, wallpaper O.K.
I suspect Mate 14.04 would be O.K. Have not tried it.
** Attachment added: Screenshot from .iso boot showing wallpaper hashed
Please can you describe how to reproduce this issue with Ubuntu MATE so
I can test it?
** Changed in: ubuntu-mate

I run standard Ubuntu and am not familiar with MATE. A couple years ago
I may have tried it briefly in another Linux distro. I forget. Months
ago I tried Lubuntu which as I remember didn't have the hashing
problem. I think it uses LXDE. There's Kubuntu, Gnome, ... however many
variations of

O.K., if not maybe one set wallpape fixes it.
There've been Wily xserver updates to xserver - one of the xserver
updates made hashing wallpaper worse, next update now much better than
15.04.
Of course 14.10 and preceding
Hello,
I have the same issue on lenovo M58P with intell graphics.
I think that the bug is related to gnome itself not only nautilus or unity. In
ambiance theme most of the apps has white hashes at the right end of the

Oops, Wily is a lot better however I got hashed wallpaper once.
15.04 comes up hashed wallpaper every time, do FilesPicturesselect
jpgset as wallpaper once or twice or three times and wallpaper is O.K.

Shazam - latest updates on Wily wallpaper boots normally. Every time so
far.
What was updated in Wily set wallpaper that 15.04 doesn't have? Let me
try updating 15.04 again.

Still very much there on boot of vivid and wily.
Do note, nautilus pictures select wallpaper once or twice or three
times wallpaper displays correctly as it does on 14.10, 14.04, etc.
I made a command line version which works sometimes:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-url
that seems more likely to be a video driver issue than a nautilus one
