The bug seems to be that gnome sound recorder tries to use ALSA, but the
ALSA plugin for PulseAudio is broken.
Gnome sound recorder should use PulseAudio natively. Bad gstreamer sink
default in ubuntu.

It seemed like it was fixed for a while, and then re-appeared. I just
stopped recording sound; my sound card drivers make my mics so quiet
there's little point anyways, and it's been like that since 8.10..
I'm just kind of tired of filing bugs all the time I guess..

Appears regressed in Jaunty beta, as well as in Intrepid, up-to-date.
This is a very serious regression for me. It renders my use case

Ah, so gnome-sound-recorder can't be installed independently of
gnome-media? Is it the only thing in gnome-media or what other apps does
the package put on my system?
