Works for me.
Do you have a corporate firewall? Checkpoint was killing our external WMS
requests until we turned off an over-aggressive filter.

It is a common need; however servers are not always up (especially the JPL one
as it has a great load placed on it).
For the project I work on we keep a wiki page of demo servers; in the hopes
that some of them are up at any point in time:
