I don't think it's a dupe of that because the reported experience differs: I
see no mouse cursor and no powersaving effects correct the lack of an image

Configure setting it sounds good to me.
_GNU_SOURCE implies XOPEN_SOURCE set to 600 (That should include
everything from the latest standard if I'm not mistaken)
I did set 500 because it was enough for XSH api.

I killed the camel case and added documentation comment before function.
It is possible to use macros to get similar error checking to all
others system calls that would be security problem in case of failure.
