I've had a distinct channel imbalance problem developing slowly, I suspect,
for about a year or more on my K3. I discovered very recently that it is
being caused, or substantially worsened at least, by the AFX audio effects
function. I am almost entirely using CW through headphones, listening to
Google knows several!

I started using macros to drop into and out of split mode, set up the audio
and filters etc.
Couldn't the issue of DXpeditioners accidentally LINKing VFOs, or perhaps
tuning the wrong VFO
I guess it would be possible to set some (if not all) of the configs on any
K3 using a suitable macro. Might be handy in a multi-station K3 contest
setup too I guess.

Sounds to me like you are using VOX, and it is too sensitive. Try turning
VOX off (e.g. press a PTT footswitch when you want to transmit live audio -
the voice keyer automagically asserts PTT when triggered for the duration of
the message) or at least turning down the VOX sensitivity.
Do you have the audio balance control set 100% to sub instead of, say, 50/50
sum & main?
Or the config setting on b--MIX--b instead of A--MIX-b?

I'm not (yet) on topband but reckon that diversity is worth a few dbs (up to
maybe 5 dB?) on the other bands, particularly on 30m where my RX antenna (a
30m fullwave wire loop)

I agree. The K2 took me a month of evenings and was enjoyable. The K3 took
a whole day and was over too soon! Both radios worked fine from the first
power up.
There is quite a lot of soldering and toroid-winding in the K2, none of that
for the K3. If the K2 is like Meccano, the K3 is like Lego
