I also had this same issue with the application crashing upon startup after
upgrading to version 3.4.4. I was able to fix this by doing the following:
Uninstall Java 7 update 2

Hopefully my extensive IT support background will come in handy here.
I had the reported problem with installing 3.4.4 on Windows 7 64bit and
resolved it by installing Java Run

No, that's not the problem. I have to remove all extensions under optional
components except the python scripting to be able to start LO.
