Several birders were at Hamburg Town Park today, hoping to see some wind-blown birds. Jim Pawlicki had a group of four distant jaegers before noon but other than that, it was pretty slow with some flocks of Wigeon, Pintail, and Green-winged Teal. Our group then headed to LaSalle Park in Buffalo where we had a very close view of a juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER, which came right up to the railing about 50 feet from the car. We also had another unidentified JAEGER and a Red/Red-necked PHALAROPE, in addition to a COMMON TERN. Meanwhile, Dave Gordon had a group of five close jaegers at the tower at Erie Basin Marina in downtown Buffalo, which he thought were likely PARASITIC, and Jim Pawlicki had two COMMON TERNS at Woodlawn Beach State Park.
We then proceeded to the south end of Squaw Island in Buffalo where we had an adult LITTLE GULL. Noticing lots of Bonaparte's Gulls to the north of us, we headed to the north end of the island. After about 15 minutes, Jim Pawlicki showed up. After another ten minutes or so, Jim picked out an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL, which proceeded to give us some very close views. We watched this bird for about 10-15 minutes. We left, Jim stayed, and he and Dave Gordon had a first winter LITTLE GULL there around sunset. Good birding!
