Thanks for the tip. The following is how I got it to work:
1. Use "update-alternatives --config java" to get jre-1.6.0-sun
2. jgnash.sh : Accept license
>From this point onwards jgnash launches properly even after reverting back
to jre-1.6.0-openjdk.
