if you're using Apache, try creating an .htaccess file with this line in it:

I would guess your value doesn't have double quotes around.
input type=text value=?php echo $var; ? size=20 /
Because what might happen is this:
input type=text value=New York \City\ size=20
Also, take a look at stripslashes() to remove the \ before the .
