Are you aware that pdfLatex does not support Unicode? You need to use
xeLatex. But I don't use Sweave, so I do
PDFLaTeX does support Latin-1, and this is a Latin-1
character.

Are you aware that pdfLatex does not support Unicode? You need to use xeLatex.
