Tested the proposed version 1.0.1ubuntu2.12 in Mint 17.3 (which is based on
Trusty and uses apt package as is, from Trusty repos).
All works fine and no workaround with APT::Cache-start required anymore.

Seeing a bunch of reports about Ubiquity crashing and showing the same
MergeList error in translation files, I insist that the fix for this
issue *must* be backported to Trusty.

I doubt the maintainers would accept gnome-control-center in Xubuntu
just for that... We can suggest making the command configurable though.

Ok, I've tested it myself in the same other Xfce session.

So it's clear that the condition in indicator-application source code should be
changed.
