I saw exactly the same behaviour with several other packages in various
PPAs (which are not always essential)
For example in my ppa vmware-player keeps reinstalling, but not vmware-
player-kernel-modules and vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.14-* whereas
they are built from the same source package.
If no other process is running, replace doesn't cause issues. the only
time --replace will act is if the same user is runniing another beagle
process, in which case the old one will be killed, and a new one will
start.

I've been seeing this problem with Alt+Tab and Shift+Alt+Tab for the
last 2-3 weeks of the Gutsy development cycle but only just bothered to
research it. The gconf apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_windows*
edits fixed it, although compiz is running by default.
