The reason why it fails is that you have a broken modules.dep file for
the kernel, due to a broken l-u-m release (which is now fixed). At least
booting an older kernel and reinstalling -16 should make it work again.

I have 2 Edimax EW-7108PCg cards (rt61pci driver), one in gutsy with
hardy kernel and another in hardy beta with all updates.
Both systems are connected to the same access point (with WPA1/AES) and
the connection doesn't fall as it did with the gutsy kernel, but it's
still inconstant in signa
The same happens for me, it started occuring recently, I think two
kernel upgrades before 24-16, but I could be wrong. The brightness
cannot be adjusted until gnome is loaded (but that is normal right?) and
it happens at the same point during boot up every time. It's a bit
annoying.

This seems to be a rather critical bug and given your traveling
situation, I took the liberty to incorporate the one-line fix suggested

Right, I know what is causing this now. We have a complex interaction of
three things:
1. Early EC initialisation introduced by commit
c04209a7948b95e8c52084e8595e74e9428653d3
2. Timing (especially on multiprocessor / multitasking systems)
3. Possible 'problem' with ACPI DSDT embedded controller

After being directed to this bug, I unplugged my TV tuner card just to
make sure that its saa7134 and nothing else. I am glad to report that it
was indeed the case. Or at least in my case it was this TV tuner card
that was causing all the subsequent failures and crashes.

I'm giving ubuntu-8.04-beta-server-amd64 a go on my new home server. It
installed fine and is mostly running well. Sharing files and (hopefully)
a printer via samba is the major task for the server.
