We've been fixing a number of problems related to this on and off for
the last couple of release cycles. I tried it today and installation to
a virtio device (as you describe) works fine, so I think we can call
this done. If I add ,boot=on to the -drive specification, it even

unless the device in question is a mounted USB disk, but you didn't

I stand ready to be corrected, but my understanding is that Linux will
only kill processes when it actually runs out of memory. This only
happens when it runs out of swap. If a process is out of control, then
it will cause the system to thrash the swap and become unusable, but
long before
