I'm surprised that a beta version is included here. After an upgrade
from 16.04 to 18.04 Anki suddenly looked quite different and some
features where missing (e.g. my saved searches disappeared). Also some
popular plugins like AwesomeTTS are not ready for 2.1 beta yet.
The latest stable Anki
Never mind. The plugin was already broken before the upgrade and I
manually replaced it. This was overwritten now by the security upgrade.
The issue can be closed.

I've followed the advice given here and upgraded to the latest
experimental libsane and libsane-common, which fixed the problem.
simple-scan now works again with my Canon PIXMA MG5250.

I'm on Linux Mint 18 which is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and have exactly the
same problem. Unfortunately the solutions provided here did not work for
me. If I understand correctly, the fix should be:
# sudo systemctl start saned.socket
# sudo systemctl enable saned.socket
Still simple scan doesn't
I can confirm that installing the fglrx-updates fixed it for me, too.

mentioned there will be an -extras package for the missing modules. But
it's still not available AFAIK.
