I can confirm that virtualbox 5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 and
virtualbox-ext-pack 5.1.34-0ubuntu1.16.04.1 work on Xenial with the
Linux Kernel 4.13.0-36 without any freeze. I cannot test the other
packages or those on Artful at the moment.

“This morning a new kernel was installed, and I thought it strange that
I wasn't prompted to restart the computer. However, the on/off button
turned red the instant the software center started.”

I suggest to enter a new bug by running the command «ubuntu-bug linux»,
because this one is really invalid. The reason here were a lot of LVM
snapshots which take a long time to set up.
I'd still be curious whether there is an easy way to debug the initramfs
scripts.

Oh well, it seams that the proxy settings are not read correctly, that
is /etc/environment is not read and http_proxy is not exported. After
setting these variables manually, it works as expected.
