Now I can run:
xrandr -d :0 --output LVDS --mode 0x55
and get the display on the actual laptop to work. NOTE: The other
1024x768 mode didn't change anything. If someone can tell me what to do
to get proper debugging info, I can post it, just me know.

Ok, I had to connect an external monitor to get x to start on the
external monitor, then I could get a good xrandr output. See attached.

I am on a Dell Inspiron 5100 with the Radeon Mobility M7 [7500]. I have tried
several of the suggestions listed to no avail. I get a black picture

David, would you be able to follow up on Alex's questions in the
upstream bug tracker?

I'm also having this problem. I'm more than happy to provide information
on request.
My video card is: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
I'm using the auto-generated xorg.conf from "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh
xserver-xorg" (and I just redid it to ensure it was clean).

Learning how to use xrandr helps. The following command fixed things
substantially:
xrandr -d :0 --output LVDS --mode 0x48
I've attached the output of xrandr -d :0 -q --verbose to see if that
helps create an underlying fix for the bug. (Or at least, reveals a way
to avoid typing the xrandr comm
Still nothing, assuming I'm doing this properly:
xrandr -d :0 --output 1 --mode 0x48
(I assume the 0x48 in parenthesis is the XID of the mode)
Honestly, I'm not at all familiar with xrandr and the man page is a bit
on the spotty side.
