1) with nouveau drivers I can login but using dash hangs X (strange visual
effects)
2) switching to nvidia makes screen blank at login
I only solved switching to gnome from unity.

After update of 12.04 LTS from kernel 3.8.0-44-generic to kernel
3.8.0-51-generic the video no longer works on my Dell M65 with nvidia
graphics card. Upgrade to 14.04 LTS completely kills the graphics also.
I wonder if all these problems reported don't have something to do with
the kernel version
I had the same issue. After choose NVIDIA legacy binary driver-version 304.125
(proprietary tested and 304.125 with updates). After reboot I lost my desktop
and forced to reinstall the system from the DVD.
Before, I tried to update from 14.10 and failed.
Only works with X.Org X server-Nouveau dis

fixed in GRUB, I was unaware) then nouveau driver hangs awfullly!

Hi, I'm Nicola and for me downgrade ubuntu-drivers-common to version
1:0.2.91.4 doesn't work.
I tried all version, also all nvidia driver available version (331,340,346,..),
but I obtain always black screen on login.
Right now the only way for me is use bumblebee with nvidia 304 (current)

The issue I described in post #39 is still present (I'm stuck to
ubuntu-drivers-common to version 1:0.2.91.4), but seems what I described is a
different bug than many users reported here. What I need to do? Open a new bug?

At least two of us (myself and the second poster) were reporting a
problem with the Optimus functionality on a Thinkpad W530 where the
laptop dock's VGA port is not recognized by Nvidia, but which can be

I'm using nvidia-331 and it still does not work for me: I just get a blank
screen instead of the usual login one. I still need to downgrade nvidia-common
and ubuntu-driver-common to version 0.2.91.4 to be able to use any GUI. I'm on
a Thinkpad T420s, using an nvidia GF119M [NVS 4200M] (rev a1).

staff:

After restart GUI was up. I installed bumblebee. Try nvidia-343,
nvidia-340, but only nvidia-331 is OK.

But nvidia-343 still broken. Before ubuntu-drivers-common -
1:0.2.91.6/0.2.91.7 I used nvidia-343 driver. After fix I can use only
nvidia-331.
I use uBuntu 14.04 64bit, 3.13.0-36-generic, nvidia optimus dual gpu,
bumblebee 3.2.1-90~trustyp
Will not upgrading any ubuntu base files (as labeled in the software
updater), keep me safe from this bug? I want to get the other updates,

I tried the new update, but still same issue. But If i use nogpumanager option
at boot then I do get the login box, but after login still empty purple screen.

we are having, then running the update manager won't do you any harm.
There is a pretty good QA system in place to prevent an update from
bricking someone's machine. If you have similar hardware (Thinkpad W530
or whatever) and

Thank you Alberto, but this is not the issue, I have done what you suggested
already. The point is to find a way to provide you with useful logs for
debugging. I am open to your suggestions. Unfortunetaly the last attempt ended
up to an unrespondable system, so no way to get logs there.

relevant packages from the command line.

xserver-xorg-video-intel package from the xorg-edgers PPA and see if it
makes any difference? (you'll also have to disable my workaround by

I did an update today and updated ubuntu-drivers-common. I tried installing
nvidia-331 again with all its dependencies (installed nvidia-prime and other
stuff together) and rebooted. I didn't even see a login screen, the computer
hanged in a black screen. I wasn't able even to sw
@Fabio: ok, that's good news. While I can't predict for sure what
systems will work well with Intel/SNA and what won't (i.e. this is
really a bug in Intel's SNA), I can add that workaround for now. Thanks

I never installed bumblebee, mine is a clean/default ubuntu 14.04 installation.
I wonder how bumblebee shows up in log. None of bumblebee's binaries also shows
on terminal.
nogpumanager did not work
please let me know if any other solution

have passed the "gpumanager_modesetting" boot parameter (I can't see it
in either Xorg log). Maybe you forgot to update grub?

I am facing the same issue and I am trying to downgrade too. So here is
my original commands that broke the whole thing:
