I had the same issue. We might want to think about creating a graceful
failure for users that have installed XGL and Compiz from the Ubuntu
wiki.

@Jeff Rasmussen: Does the same issue mean that you didn't had a nvidia
driver after the update? If so, could you please attach your files from
/var/log/dist-upgrade (if you haven't already)?

Thanks for your bugreport.
Can you please tell me what version of libgl1-mesa-dri you have
installed? It sounds like you run a unofficial package there. Remvoing
that should fix the issue (the upgrader will pick it up on the next run
again and install the official edgy version).

I'm using version 6.5.1+cvs20060824 of libgl1-mesa-dri.
I believe this version was installed as a dependency to compiz
I removed compiz, and upgrade passed successfully
