My camera is Fujifilm Finepix F500EXR. I have read bug reports from
other users with similar cameras experiencing download problems since
the release of version 14.04.

I suspect you're seeing bug #1296275 and/or bug #1309891. It may be a
bug in gphoto2, the library Shotwell uses to communicate with cameras.
