I've gotten to the bottom of this, and in the process figured out why I
was never able to reproduce it in a VM.
Basically, because random-crypted swap (as set up by the ecryptfs helper
in ubiquity) is a raw, randomly-keyed block device, there is no UUID on
the container device - which means blkid

I have written a fix.
It is different from the debian one: instead of forcing a hopefully installed
font, mine queries the X server for the available fonts. This way, the fix
should work on every platform, regardless of whether Arial, Serif or Sans is
present.

more details, which is a pain as my connection goes down every few
minutes because of this problem...
1) here is a "successful disconnect cycle": It should not disconnect in
the first place, but at least is reconnects..
I don't think this is a good idea as a straight sync since we haven't
made the libav9 transition in Ubuntu yet.

Alright, I'm thoroughly confused now.
When I boot the Quantal live CD, the problem is gone, the speakers get
muted as they should be.
However, I still can't get it to work when I downgrade the kernel to the
same version used on the CD. I even tried downgrading ALSA and
Pulseaudio as well to no av
