rebase I end up with a severely crippled system. If the rebase fails
for some reason the user is left with a situation from which it is quite
hard to recover. The /etc directory will obviously be in a

Thanks to everyone involved in getting this fixed. I'll say that I
still don't have much confidence in all of this, but judging by the test
case, it seems that at least for my lucid system there is no longer a
discrepancy between the status managed with init.d and upstart. Please
release to
got a bit mixed up with the versions. It is hardy vservers that
currently have no update path to anywhere., intrepid is already EOL and
an update to lucid is impossible because of bug 430224.

I have a cheap NAS box that does not understand the unix extensions of
samba. Other than that, it was more or less working fine in Jaunty.
After recent updates, accessing the box from Karmic is hit-and-miss at
best.

simply downgrading samba-common, smbfs and smbclient to the Jaunty
versions did not resolve the issue.

I've never understood what metadata etckeeper does indeed track that git
wouldn't. I only know that git won't track empty directories and that
can create problems. I believe the README is indeed mistaken here.
