Using the latest incrementals (Feb, 17),
I tried to build UML kernel by typing:
make clean ARCH=um
make -j2 vmlinux ARCH=um
Make stops on the following error:
CHK arch/um/user-offsets.h
UPD arch/um/user-offsets.h
CHK arch/um/include/user_constants.h
HOSTCC arch/um/sys-i38

Thanks for the explanation- thats good news. So, when Linux 2.6.11 comes out
and gets marked stable in portage, we will effectively be able to drop
usermode-sources-2
