As I am doing the exact same thing that you described above to answer this
post, my guess is no, there is not a faster way.

For a long time, I typed with my right index finger while holding my
phone in my left hand. However, then I found that if I put the phone
in my lap or on a table and use both index fingers, I was able to type
faster. As has been said before, whatever works best for you, use that

I updated earlier this morning but haven't gotten a chance to check

Everything seems to work well and it's certainly nice to finally have that

The app does seem a bit snappier, but I still sometimes experience the issue
that when I type a name or something accurately (by touching and waiting to
ear the feedback) that sometimes

Just to confirm, this feature is still available but you have to switch it
on in the settings.
To do this, open the Settings App on your phone and find Fleksy. You need
to have "raise to speak" on.
