Dex,
I get it, but I don't think I'm quite ready yet! Like I said to Tom, I'll
give it a try when I get a little more confident and have a day to spare :-)

Tom,
I'm coming to realize that! Don't think I'm quite ready to build just
yet... It's been too long. Maybe when I'm back up to speed--- and have a
day to lose :-)

No sign of icon.png for xastir on build 2.0.0-2.1ubuntu1 but no matter.
Launching from the main menu with the default icon.
I may get back to it when I get the rest of the Ham Radio stuff set up

Good morning,
trolled around a few threads re starting xastir from a terminal or from a
.desktop. At the moment I'm starting it from a terminal, which of course
stays open behind the application.
Writing a .desktop is trivial... but
Where do I put it?
Where do I find the icon?
I'm back to linux
David, Iain,
Thanks for your help. It's all good now, but one other question. New thread.

Iain,

xastir* to start the serial port.
It's been a long day so I'll look at it tomorrow. Thanks all for you help,
at least I know the problem, if not the answer :-)

On Wed,
Yeah, I was only thinking about the serial port. No coffee yet. It's a common
thing to forget you need elevated privileges for serial access. One of those
hardwired responses. Yours is a much better answer.
Thanks.

On Debian systems, and its derivatives like Ubuntu, you can do:
sudo adduser YOURUSERNAME dialout
The dialout group is allowed to access the serial ports (historically
