Re: [313] detroit vs. bay area, fila brazillia
Since I live in SF and pormote clubs here I get to put my 2 cents in. If a good Detroit or Chicago house Dj shows up at a club (Gemini and K Hand and Theo Parrish come to mind) they play the same flacid boring ass shit that all the locals do. no crescendos, no valleys sterile. I had precisely this experience, to the letter, seeing Stacey Pullen at the SF Museum of Modern Art party. This was a great venue, and when I saw Stacey Pullen in Seattle in '97 it was the best set I had ever seen. While the exhibition was top notch, and Mark Ambrose's set had it's moments, Stacey Pullen was no crescendos, no valleys sterile - precisely. So, I didn't have huge hopes for his set @ DEMF, which was considerably better, but still nothing like when I saw him in Seattle in '97. I get the feeling he plays for the crowd a little too much these days. On the whole, I was much less impressed with the huge-name DJs @ DEMF than I was by the rest. Don't get me wrong, they were still damn good, but Give me Derrick Plasaiko or Theo Parrish over Stacey Pullen any day. I think I prefer emotion from a DJ, even if the set isn't mechanically tight. Re: [313] Re: Industrial - The Cabs
hello, Cabaret Voltaire had their first release back in 1978 so they were doing electronic music while a lot of industrial artists were still at nursery school. As for now, from what I remember Steven Mallender is living in Australia, Richard Kirk is still alive and well and releasing new stuff and I can't remember what the 3rd bloke was called. They were doing live shows before many of us were born, they were messing around with tape loops and audio collages on stage as early as 1974. I believe the third original member was named Chris Watson, he left the cabs in 1982. He eventually went on to become an audio engineer for the BBC. Apparently he went to specialize is nature based field recordings, and actually put out a few solo releases of field recordings. If anyone has more info, I would be interested in knowing more. On Decks Fx 909, my favourite part is when he breaks it down to Stewart Walker, Savvaas Yaatis, Heiko Laux, Maurizio etc. I'm not implying that he go backwards at all. I know for sure there is a connection to the character in David Lynch's Twin Peaks, but my private investigators have informed me that this producer also records under the guise of Pacou of Tresor fame. Re: [313] Agent Cooper/ Pacou
What else can you say, its Pacou. Pacou is Pacou! Biography Born in Berlin 1972, where he cites his earliest musical inspirations from Pop radio during the 80´s; Pet Shop Boys, Art of Noise, Depeche Mode, etc. Some specialist radio shows, like Kiss FM (Berlin) and Studio 89 featured mix tapes fresh out of New York combining Disco, House, Miami Bass and Pop: mindblowing to say the least at that time. During 1990 and 1991, the new European club subculture was suddenly underway and the first sounds of Techno gripped Berlin like no other. Studying engineering and economics by day, Pacou indulged in the nocturnal acid/techno circuit in the early Berlin clubs Quartier, Planet, and Tresor, hearing the likes of Underground Resistance, Todd Terry and local legends Basic Channel from Hard Wax. Pacou started buying records in 1991, developing a fierce vinyl appetite that turned into equipment purchases by 1993. His occassional Tresor club spot turned into a DJ residency in 1995, maintaining an intense Tresor club night called Headquarters: the weekly showcase for Berlins lesser-known but quality underground DJs. Simultaneously working on his own productions suddenly gave way to the vague series of Pacou dubplates and white labels filtering through the club. Catching the ear of the Tresor Record label: the next step in the relationship became Pacous Reel Techno-entitled debut EP in late 1996. Live performance and DJ obligations allowed Pacou to continue his work with the Headquarters night until 1997 which marked the release of his debut album, Symbolic Language. This opened the floodgates for a slew of subsequent releases by Pacou, his a.k.a agent cooper, and The X-Men Berlin; the amorphous Berliner project of which Pacou was amain force within. In a town where virtually everybody seems to be a producer or DJ, Pacou followed up the popularity of his Tresor debut with his second full-length album No Computer Involved. A deeper focus within his sound and ideas, it broke from the traditional'banging eight-track format, to be understood as a soundtrack for the present Berlin Technoscene. Each track was created with entirely different studio setups, and without the aid of a computer. Break the rules of the environment, build up the network. Having by this time entirely broken away from the illusion of the typical ob/paycheck cycle, Pacou launched LL Records in 1998 to supplement his flood of output and demand abroad. Spending extensive time on tour in South America, Japan, Australia and both Western/Eastern Europe widened Pacou's vision to the global scenes, both modern and primitve, and inspired his A Universal Movement EP of February 1999. A little less than a year later, Pacou's career third album is due out. Entitled State of Mind, it will reflect a much more dancefloor-oriented work than No Computer Involved. Seeking to escape the temporary anddisposable DJ-tool stereotypes, and return to more timeless and song-based structures, State of Mind jams the standards with straightup sophistication and simultaneously kickdown Techno. excerp: http://www.tresorberlin.de/america/index.html [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Struck by that amazing label that is Vertical Form, I have been on a mission to uncover the identity of the mysery artist Agent Cooper, from VF 002 Rapaciolli/ Agent Cooper split. While an artist I am not, I do think it would be cool to have a UR tie in by way of their UR logo morphed into a 313 logo which acts as a tribute to them. Perhaps this makes it one-sided in the grand scheme of things but I think it would look swt. :) Replace UR with 313 and add On-line Agent underneath instead of Underground Resistance. Perhaps make it just a small version of the logo over the left breast. UR's permission would be required for this, of course. I wouldn't want this to be seen as a tone-by-tone imitation. ;) And having one of Alan's superheros on the back would be the icing on the cake! I'm still lovin' the Break the Chains of Your Music UR shirt, even though it has been eaten alive and washed with something red over the course of it's life. ;) Cheers, Tom 1.2 obOctaveOne: I picked up a white label of I Believe which just has a stamp of Octave One/I Believe on it. RE: [313] Agent Cooper/ Pacou
Hmm, I have to second this because I interviewed Pacou some time ago and he clearly stated not being a big fan of software. He's an hardware kinda guy. I even asked him the question what his point of view was on software and he said he only used software for some mastering and for the releases on Djax. If you are really interested I could always dig up the answers I got back from Pacou. Vertical Form New Release Info.
Artist: Pub Title: Summer Tracklisting: 1. Original 2. (They Can't See Us In The Dark) Delay Configuration 1 3. Arovane AMX1 4. Nick Rapaccioli Remake 5. (Later In The Dark) Delay Configuration 2 6. Arovane AMX4 Catalogue No: VFORMCD001 Format: CD Release Date: Mid / Late June 2000 Distribution: Ideal Record Distributors Additional Note: Limited to 750 copies only For our first CD project we present a compilation package of the recent Pub: Summer project, which includes both parts one and two (taken from VFORM003 VFORM004) with additional, specifically commissioned mixes from both Vladislav Delay and Arovane which were not released on either of the vinyl releases. In total, the project clocks in at over sixty minutes in length, effectively and consistently documenting the outcome of a large scale production projectwhich includes some of the most exciting, innovative and talented and producers on the current electronic scene. The opening cut sees the original version of 'Summer' in its full 16 minute long epic format which lays the foundation and starting point for the project to be built upon. This original version is a masterfully and beautifully crafted electronic masterpiece, which delves deeply into the blissed, melodic and aquatic side of atmospherics and electronics. With the fusion of heart moving melodies alongside expertly executed delayed and compressed sound formations, the groove develops into a beautifully shaped piece, that produces quite unique and special results. To follow, Helsinki based Vladislav Delay delivers the first of two stunning reconfiguration's providing us with a chilled, moving outlook on the 'Summer' sound. By approaching production without the use of any sound sources, samples or sequences, the reconfiguration was composed entirely as Delay's own vision of certain thought provoking and unique elements of the original. Through turning and recalculating this musical vision back into a completely new groove, the initial detailed melodic elements of the original are restructured in a much deeper, crisp and more experimental direction. In total, the piece lasts over eighteen minutes, with a number of differing structural and textural changes continuously added and withdrawn at varying stages of the groove's development, keeping the depth and feel continually fresh without ever losing direction. On the third cut, Berlin based Arovane applies his trademark electronic trickery to the mix, completely reinventing the original and producing quite simply, classic results. As with many of his productions and remixes emphasis is based heavily around the use of strong melodies and deep moving atmospherics, with this piece being no exception. In doing so, production is approached by carefully picking up on particular melodies present in the original and by completely rebuilding the rhythmic mechanics of the groove. With structure and form in place, an inspiring selection of heart moving chords, strings and melodies are played over an endless groove with the final outcome evolving into nothing short of electronic perfection. Next up, Vertical Form regular Nick Rapacccioli simultaneously redefines and restructures the 'Summer' sound in an equally fresh and inspiring direction. Using his signature style manipulative production techniques along with a heavy 'Berlin' influence, a whole new groove is written and created entirely from his own vision of the original in a differing context. The outcome is an entirely different take on the project, with the results being a much deeper, more diverse and conceptual arrangement which will undoubtedly appeal to anyone with an interest in the mechanics and new direction of modern electronic music. Track five continues with the research of deeper and more diverse experiments in sound, with Vladislav Delays second take on 'Summer' once again providing us with one of his untouchable sonic adventures into the world of chilled, icey soundtrack styled atmospherics. In reducing and reconstructing his first mix along with the subtraction of certain rhythmics and metalwork, greater emphasis is placed on structure of sound and the dark post industrial atmosphere of the initial groove. The outcome documents a deep and intense excursion which quite literally draws you captive from beginning to end. Finally, to conclude the project, Arovane provides us with his second instalment of advanced electronic funk. Steering away from his usual sound and groove format and adopting an almost more techno approach to the construction of the mix, the outcome of the piece develops into a groove somewhat reminiscent of early Chain Reaction outputs from the likes of Substance and Various Artists. The piece itself was designed and created to coincide with his first take on 'Summer', in which the interpretation was built predominantly around the recreation of selected chords and melodies sourced from the
Re: [313] berlin/detroit
well, IMO the music tie comes from parallells (sp) in economy and social standings. It goes way back with Germany, and has so many social, economic and political layers-with both Germany and Detroit. Tell your friend to look up pre post Wiemar Germany and the fall of the German economy after WWI which in end fused the rise of Hitler etc. It is then that the German economy really started to decrease and fall onto hardships. My last two years of college I spent researching pre and post Wiemar Germany and the tolls it took on the artistic community-specifically the Bauhaus School of Art the departments of typography/design and the weaving workshop. SO, if he wants to take a gander at my sources-let me know. As for Detroit, focus on the industrial boom, esp. with automobiles and the imports and exports of Detroit industry. The riots is also where he should focus, and how they effected the city from racial, economic infostructure standpoints. I think to make the paper complete Id suggest interviewing some city officials ho were around then and also producers such as Mike Banks,Kelli Hand, Allan etc who have watched the city change over the years. ermm, so i hope all i said here was correct-as a history major,id feel like an ass if i was way off base. lesson for today is closed diana Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

How about in subtle small script somewhere, From the ashes we will rise again? :) Matt E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://magicmattkelly.tripod.com While an artist I am not, I do think it would be cool to have a UR tie in by way of their UR logo morphed into a 313 logo which acts as a tribute to them. Perhaps this makes it one-sided in the grand scheme of things but I think it would look swt. :) Replace UR with 313 and add On-line Agent underneath instead of Underground Resistance. Perhaps make it just a small version of the logo over the left breast.

Right and wrong. It *was* a group prior to UR, but it swiftly changed to a four man vocal house group that in many ways mirrored the Temptations (Banks was NOT on stage doing choreographed dance steps - he was deep in UR by that time). They toured with Martha Wash among other house notables before going their separate ways in the mid 90's. Re: [313] Previous v Present turnouts in Detroit
i myself found derrick may's set dissappointing. Now i have only seen him 3 times but i have never real been impressed (except for a solar night). Granted he did play excellent tracks His set was good but i lacked to dj skills of a so called pioneer. I dont really think a really even mixed many records, lots of cuts and fades, and why dont you listen people before you maybe Rolando, kevin, and derrick were sharing the same records. This by far is not a diss for derrick but a voiced dissapointement again, maybe its just me. I also found the poet at the end excellent and meaning fulling but i found the drum guy to be offbeat and just plain annoying after a while how long can you proceed with the same beat, i think he even had to start the record over again did'nt he. I have been thinking about this, and trying to work out why it makes me sad. The thing is with a DJ's set, it's not really supposed to be broken down into its elements like that. I can never understand why people dissect a set into tracks, and technical tricks, and that's it. It's valid, sure, I just don't get that myself. Maybe you're analysing it too much, breaking it down, so you're doomed to find faults with it, in a sense. The thing is you're deconstructing it when the DJ has put all this energy into creating an illusion, an experience, a vibe. It's like looking at a beautiful woman and trying to identify her flaws. You could try and suspend that critical voice and just see if the DJ moves you - it's supposed to be a spiritual thing as much as an an intellectual one, after all - but if you're over critical than that intuitive response doesn't stand much of a chance. If the DJ still doesn't move you, then, OK, it ain't happening. People say that Hawtin is technically superior to Mills but I would take Mills anyday just because he has that jouissance. Technique isn't everything. Maybe this is the voice of a self-confessed failed trainspotter (I can never pick tracks out of context). Just an idea anyway. C
