RE: [313] (Yet another) Track ID

2000-09-27 Thread Jason Martin
I'll throw in a couple guesses. Carl's Good Girls is powered by a huge
brazilian batacuda, which to some people sounds like a marching band drum
corps.

this is of course sampled from sergio mendes and the brasil 66..

Another minute, obscure possibility is the flipside of Meco's disco Star
Wars LP (yes, I bought this when it first came out), which also riffed
heavily on the marching band sound.

funnily enough I always thought the b-side of the meco star wars record
sounded like something carl might have done once upon a time..

I know the track you're talking about - I've heard it
played by a few people. The problem is, I don't know
the title of it either.

As far as these ears are concerned, all that's going
on in the track are these snares and a kickdrum. I
know it's not ritchie because although he played it,
I've heard other people play it too.

Mixtapes

Hello

I've got 2 mixtapes(well 4 actually, but 2 for each set) by Derrick May
and Juan Atkins when they were on JJJ's Mix-Up in Australia a while
back. There are sooo many great tracks that I don't know the names or
artists, and I was wondering if any helpful 313ers out there might be
able to listen to them and write down the names of the tracks. I'm
willing to pay them for their time and effort. Probably better someone
from Australia does this as I'm in Adelaide, and also the Aussie dollar
at the moment is screwed, so it wouldn't work out to much to someone in
the US.

Anyhoo, if anyone is willing, let me know and we'll work something out.

Thanks again peeps

Well, Mad Mike some of the UR gang have been quite anonymous, at least
in the way of not posing for photographs without some kind of
mask. For example, Wolfgang Voigt (Mike Ink) and Aphex Twin are known for
their numerous pseudonyms.
Actually, it's quite simple to stay anonymous if you put at least some

Toneshifting (one word, for aesthetic reasons) is not a style, it is a
result...

But generally, it only occurs with highly repetitive techno for anything
complex or melodic becomes an oppressive agent...

Simply put (I have to get to class), toneshifting is when the listener
projects his/her own melody onto the repetition, rather then the music
project out to the listener. The track, as simple as can be is merely a
vehicle for whatever is in the listeners head, a compromise between the
artist and the listener, a truly interactive music (and I contend a relative
first in modern popular music)...

The reason for the term toneshift is that the general trend amongst
listeners is to change a monotonous single repeating tone or rhythm into a
major/minor note shift, usually occurring in 2 bar patterns...

sorry about the laymen's music terms...

More on the ambient tip...but if you're interested in seeing how
toneshifting can trick you into thinking something is there that isn't, take
a listen to Steve Reich's It's gonna rain.

Reich was an early experimental/ambient musician that would sometimes take
spoken word stuff and chop it up into really repetitive segments..but in a
very subtle way. Anyway, the repetitiveness starts to get ingrained in your
head and before long, you start fogetting you are hearing words and they
start to take on a more percussive nature. There are no fancy effects or
anything, just repetitive speech which your mind starts to interpret as
something different.

It's very cool stuff...definitely bringing out a unique feature of our mind,
but you can't really shake your ass to it like you can with the Surgeon =]

Talking about which... some time ago I let an interesting thread slip
through, the one about tone-shifting - on Surgeon's Balance, one of my
favourite tracks remain Circles - one of the simplest things I've ever
heard, just a pounding, heavy percussive line with an alarm bell-like
sound
increasing and decreasing in volume on top of it... would that qualify for
 tone-shifting music ?

Well, Mad Mike some of the UR gang have been quite anonymous, at least

2000-09-27 Thread Jonny McIntosh
By the way, does anyone know if Good Girls is going to appear on Designer
Music Vol. 2, and/or
if either/both volumes are going to be released on vinyl?

It's infuriating that the original Designer Music EP never gets a proper
release, though I suspect it's for legal reasons. If my info's right it was
a limited mail out only. Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson have the
cheekiness to play it every time I hear them and it does my head in not
getting hold of it! The original sample could well be Sergio Mendes. (I
don't know what you mean by I got that and I can't recall any such banging,
smooth latin drum - there's a lot of Sergio Mendes' stuff.)

I had always thought the EP was Designer Music as in just remixes - the
recent Designer Music 12 being a continuation of the concept (this time
remixing Alexander Robotnik and Deelite) - from what I've heard, the rest of
the original EP was remixes. The Vol 1 CD makes sense of that idea, anyway.

BTW, just got hold of a copy of the Equinox EP on Retroactive at long last.
Please Stand By is the business!

Jonny.

2000-09-27 Thread Dennis Donohue
My favorite Surgeon track is definitely La Real, off of his label
counterbalance (CB02). I love what Tony is doing recently, the
counterbalance stuff is great. I've heard a lot of coments on this list
about how he, (and other people playing similar music - dubbed
boom-boom-boom) have no groove or funk to them. I would have to
dissagree. To me, this is the stuff that gives me that rush of energy.
This is what gives me inspiration to dance.

I think, if you are going to compile a list of music like this that is
influential, you would have to include Adam Beyer and Marco Carola (at
least), if not Gaetek, Christian Smith and joel mull.

Cheers
Dennis

some toneshifting tracks...

2000-09-27 Thread darw_n
Go listen to Hawtin's Decks Effex whatever it's called CD, and tracks 11
12 have some minor toneshift capability in the mid congas, particularly at
track 12 time 28 seconds when the bass snaps back in (although it only lasts
until good 'ol Ritchie does that awfully boring mix into 13)...

Also, another mix that goes from audible toneshifts (toneshifts that are
actually there) to my version of projective toneshifts, track 7 into 8. On
7, that cute little Latin like piano (my favorite part on the whole CD) has
actual shifting in it (minor/major), then the mix starts at 8, the piano
drops and a girls chant thing starts. The toneshift really becomes
noticeable after the first little feedback loop that Hawtin does (that weird
sucky noise), and the girl chant come back in, and the chant is toneshifting
(not really switching from minor to major, its just in your head)

Now this second one (7-8) is a common effect I know, where the ear is used
to hearing something and when that something disappears, the ear seems to
still hear it, I just wanted to point that out as to its general sound in my
head...

The first mix I talk of is a real toneshift, BUT it's really faint, and
perhaps even impossible to hear for I could have trained myself to easily
hear it. There are much better examples, but I choose to point this out
because everyone and there mom has this CD...
