I haven't had any luck seeing it around, and if anyone had an extra

his the shittiest DJ I've even gone to see 3-4 times

I think most people agree that Stacey Pullen is a top DJ. I've only been
to
see him once but he made me get off the seat I was sitting on and go
dance to a great selection of solid tech-house grooves for the rest of the
night. I'm just waiting for his return to the U.K.
On a production note I can't really comment but I do like the remix of
'Air Frog' (the only record of his I own!) I'm gonna have to get this
'Theory Of Silent Phase' EP I think!

[313] European festivals?

2002-01-25 Thread Andy Mitchell
Hi everybody,
I'm aiming to make the long hall to Europe for the northern summer (probably
for the bulk of June/July), and was wondering what people pick to be the
best music festivals on over that period. I'm aware of the bigger ones, so
tips on lesser known/more localised events are welcomed as well... and
website/contact details where possible.
Thanks,
Andy

RE: [313] Kirk Degorgio

2002-01-25 Thread Batory, Jason
 ... so I really doubt he's explored
his head to the extent he needs to, to produce something truly outstanding.
But I believe he will. To me, the As One thing is a tight LP, good quality
and from the heart ... but doesn't got the last, great step. Not quite.

As far as the new album goes I agree, but I'll also add that, in my opinion,
he has already taken this great step and produced something truly
outstanding with the Planetary Folklore LP back in 97. An absolute classic.

Not only are the original and the 2nd state some of Kenny Larkin's best
work, but the Carl Craig remix is one of his finest. It was reissued last
year. You may still be able to find copies floating around.

2002-01-25 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Thx, I also have a similar query with the 1st Model500 LP on cd - that seems
quieter too, but I guess the explanation might be the same ... rather than
an audio equipment problem.

(Excuse my atrocious grammar, earlier - I'm trying to do other things in
between rapping about more interesting stuff so I rush occasionally.)

... I blame Tom Stiehler who masters for Tresor - on those CDs everything
seems 'up' in the mix, crystal clear and hard ... one gets habituated to
expect that kind of sound.

More likely related to EQ than anything. The CD release does not
appear to
be lower in overall volume, but has tons of high frequency stuff, and is
pretty soft on the bass end. If your system is geared in the opposite
fashion, or if you simply dig bass, it might appear to be quieter
than other
CDs.

No, Alex Reese has nothing to do with it. The name Reese comes from Kevin
Saunderson nickname Reese, actualy he called himself Kevin 'Master reese'
Saunderson (KMS). 'Master Reese' is a spin of from his middle name,
Maurice...

Uh...

The Reese Bassline that people were talking about in the jungle/dnb world
does come from Alex Reese.

I don't know if Kev Saundy ever made a bassline that was called the Reese,
but that is irrelavent, that's not what they were talking about.

also there is a Samuel L. Session record, I thnk Cycle number one. On it
there is a typical Reese sounding tune.

The best for me though is the 100 not out ep by DJ Q on Filter records. It
has been appropriately described as the best Kevin Saunderson tune not to be
done by Kevin Saunderson. I had it but some bastard switched it at a gig

[313] The Reese bass

2002-01-25 Thread DJ Entropy
HmI believe I stand corrected here, although I would like some
clarification on this.

So the Reese Bass that was used in Jungle/DNB back in 1994 was sampled from
Kev Saundy? I did some searching and this appears to be the case, however, is
it just a
coincidence that Alex Reese was floating around at this time in Jungle/DNB, and
he had nothing to do with it?

That's really odd, because everyone I have ever known in the jungle/dnb scene
has thought the Reese Bass comes from Alex Reese...

If this is the case, what is the name of Kev Saundy's tune where this bass
comes from, cause I'd like to hear it.

Re: [313] RE: (313) RE: (313) stacey pullen - electric relaxation

2002-01-25 Thread s mcgill
I was disappointed to see Stacey in the backroom of the End a year ago. It
was the Plus8 night with Mr C, Hawtin and Acquaviva in the other room.
Stacey was playing a slow jamming house set and more or less sitting down.

I was gutted at this point because I had gone all the way to see him
especially. I remember seeing him in 95-97 play sets at Voodoo and he was
tearing it up. Very different style of djing, all top end mixing so it was
like a watery sound just like his album in parts. This is a lot harder to
mix like this as you can notice when the hats start to go out quicker than a
kick but he was always premier league.

Maybe he hasn't felt the need to perform as hard these days or suffering
from a change in direction but I certainly wouldn't write him off.

Fair enough though if you have seen him 4 times and he hasn't delivered for
u.

unless of course you don't have the required kit ... And of course now you

Does it bollocks. It comes from Kevin 'Master Reese' Saunderson - a track
like 'Human Bond' is a good example of his use of the sound. Alex Reece
(note correct spelling of his surname) has absolutley nothing to do with
it...

Uh...

The Reese Bassline that people were talking about in the
jungle/dnb world does come from Alex Reese.

I don't know if Kev Saundy ever made a bassline that was called
the Reese, but that is irrelavent, that's not what they were
talking about.

I doubt if this is the good ol' FAQ Otto Koppius and Matt Macqueen where

the website also says this as the the [313]-FAQ:

For some historical perspective about the stated subject matter of the

of techno entitled Techno Rebels. Consider it the unabridged version of the

I remember the night you're talking about although I think I was mainly in
the main room for Hawtin Aquaviva that night. I caught him the time
before at The End and that was only about a month earlier. That time was
the first time I heard him spin and I liked what I heard, all good
dancefloor material. I imagine this style to be a more typical Pullen set,
somewhere in between techno house but all excellent tracks to dance to.
After that night I remember going record shopping looking for Stacey
Pullen material as I was so impressed by what I heard.
My point is really that he must have played a lounge set in the lounge,
let him play in the main room and you'll get the harder side of Pullen -
unless you're at Motor of course ;o)

So the final verdict on DJ Pullen? :o)

I vote yes (as in I think he's 'good'). My reasons is that he's versatile
and competent. Any reports to the contrary I'd attribute to fatigue or
deliberate archness. Someone said that one of the nights upon which it's
claimed he played poorly there were a lot of 'MTVers' in the crowd ... I
know of at least 2 other occasions I've seen djs deliberately attempt to
rile a crowd they didn't like: Aphex Twin - when his assessment of some
skinheads he'd spotted at the front was not good, Carl Craig at The End -
when no one liked his remix of Buena Vida - that was funny: 'What The Fuck!'
he said when no one danced - But it got a cheer!

Wasn't Aphex's NYC debut playing sandpaper on one deck? I'm sure I read
something ludicrous like that some years back?

Saw Mills in Zurich late last year and after about 2 hours he looked at the
admittedly lame crowd and raised his eyebrows, and probably thought I can't
be arsed with this... he had been dropping a number of classics throughout.

Adam F is damn good.

His tune, Brand New Funk is the tune that really got me into Drum and
Bass. Just ask KT, i'd scream like a loon when it came on.

I'm listening to the Andy C remix of Stand Clear as we speak, it's got
the
whole scene buzzing at the mo.

And his tune Metrosound is currently one of the most saught after tunes
as
well, it's only on promo. I want it bad, and Sheldon went ape on NYE when
he
heard it.

And the guy who said that about Bad Company - who's he? Cheeky sod.

Ok, I'm new to this mail service, so I'm not familiar with the topics you

But, surely if you subscribe to a mail service like this, you have more

How on earth did anyone ever confuse Kevin Saunderson and Alex Reece??? I'm
gobsmacked.

Also Drum and Bass. A load of ex-ravers who discovered a few techno records
round about 1993, what are most of 'em doing now?
Speed bloody Garage, 2-Step, what ever you want to call it.

Alright, there's a few D+B producers who can cut it (Photek/Dillinja?) but
overall, I have to say it's bobbins, and barely worth a discussion, that
music is full of people just trying to make a fast buck (I don't blame 'em

No, Alex Reese has nothing to do with it. The name Reese comes from Kevin

The Reese Bassline that people were talking about in the jungle/dnb

I don't know if Kev Saundy ever made a bassline that was called the

RE: [313] string 'n' pad

2002-01-25 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Careful about asking 'Is it music?' almost any dance music afficionada has
to ask themselves the same question in a dark night of the soul ... But for
me personally, it IS music. Perhaps a new kind of music which takes the
aesthetic principles of modern art and applies them to sound - CF: The Art
of Noise (the name itself is a kind of manifesto, non?). Their early records
could be seen as early techno, in which the potentional of Kraftwerk, Devo,
etc were finally fused into as much a new way of appreciating sound as a new
kind of music(That's my stock answer to 'Is it Music' anyway!).

Also, I'm happy for people to come here ignorant - to educate on modern
detroit dance music is what the site's meant to do, after all.

Finally, sorry for preaching to those who know more than me. Peace.

Point taken Ken,

Sorry, just was on a bit of a rant. Of course people should come here
ignorant, it's a good resource for people.

I just can't stand a lot of that sort of music - the boundaries between
that and techno, I admit ,are blurred.
It's a lot of the jokers associated with that sort of music that I have a
pet hate for as well (of course, NOT ALL of them).

For the record I hate Student, Puffa-Jacket wearing wanna-be bad boys as
well (You know the sort, were dead into rave/happy hardcore, then found
some 'credibility' with 'Jungle' and now are speed garage
producers/know-it-alls)

how people like optical, ed rush or bad company have pushed music
and also mastering,,,just have a listen to some of their plates
on your system and then play some of your own records,,,you will
see what i talk about
another tihng,,,you should go to a garage/2.step,,anyway called party

Ok, I'm new to this mail service, so I'm not familiar with the topics
you
  discuss.

But, surely if you subscribe to a mail service like this, you have more
than a passing interest in music from Detroit?
How on earth did anyone ever confuse Kevin Saunderson and Alex Reece???
 I'm
  gobsmacked.

Also Drum and Bass. A load of ex-ravers who discovered a few techno
 records
round about 1993, what are most of 'em doing now?
Speed bloody Garage, 2-Step, what ever you want to call it.

Alright, there's a few D+B producers who can cut it (Photek/Dillinja?)
but
overall, I have to say it's bobbins, and barely worth a discussion, that
music is full of people just trying to make a fast buck (I don't blame
'em
for that) but really, is it 'music'?

I know exactly what you mean it is so much more than just taste, but before
anything else you have to appreciate the music, first you have to feel it
then and only then can you offer a view. In the end though if music is a
feeling and you ain't feeling it it ain't music to you. Your view can
however change if you are prepared to open yourself to new experiences and
through practice, ie. listening, you can then train your ear to enjoy it.
When you know the effort and thought that has gone into a composition you
can't help but admire the individuals or person that created the piece.
Question is a piece of music as valid knowing the creator/s are doing it to
make a quick killing or are the struggling musicians out there the true
music makers?

Blimey what a heavy composition!

Personally I enjoyed Alex's post, if only for the outstanding use of the

hardly heard since the great days of Madchester. Discuss.

And if you ask me, he's right about that garage/2-step bobbins

[313] 2001 gems

2002-01-25 Thread Alastair_Jones
As it's still near the beginning of the year, I thought that this is still
a relevant topic.
Over the last few weeks there have been loads of lists in magazines, net
etc. with top lists of 2001.
While I don't slavishly go out and buy all the top 10 records, I do find
these useful to check I haven't missed anything major which I should have
bought.
I bought Cannibal Ox The Cold Vein the other day, which has turned out to
be really interesting musical hip hop (although I'm not a big fan of the
genre). Has anyone any comments on this album, or any albums which they
resisted buying / didn't hear about all year, and have now bought, and
recommend.
Cheers.

RE: Re: [313] inside out

2002-01-25 Thread Rob Theakston
delsin's good. so are mangos. kevin saunderson rocks. i'd like for him to
bring back some of those older tracks via repress. and i thought it was
Kevin Maurice Saunderson into Master Reese as a nickname/play on words which
led to Reese?

maybe professors sicko/van loo/malbon know the answers?

RE: [313] is it music?

2002-01-25 Thread neontsetse
 This is barely comprehensible. Sorry.

what do you mean by that ?

- the grammar and stuff ? - pffr

or you got the meaning and you complain about that ?

you could complain a bit more detailed then -

- oh and robin - about the bla-man thing

hm listen - I would love to shut up and just read and learn more

about the deeper things in 313-culture -

(beside the always good2know record collector-stuff)

but most comments here - are so flat and are just üärgh -

I mean why the f±±± is this rubbish almost every day, like:

Mills should do and write this and that, or yesterday - Stacey Pullen
should

mix like this so people give him a mark as if it´s about getting marks at
school ?

the Music needs to be like this and that ? ? ?

What do you know about the meaning of certain drum patterns ?

The meaning of african culture in music (and techno music) and how

it developes through the circumstances the dominating nations create on the
planet.

What is it that makes you move - beside banging beats or that it´s hot ?

I´m here 4 understanding more ...

does that make sense ?

ps - alex reece c not s was the pulp fiction one -

and - adam f - bob james sampling - octave one - bob james roadies

off 2day

party nite nite
