Re: [313] Ulrich Schnauss

2002-02-22 Thread Mike Taylor

I have to be honest, this album just plain sucks.

Yeah, is does have that CCO IDM hip-hop thing going, but where Arovane's
Tides is uplifting yet still slightly menacing, Ulrich's stuff is just plain
cheddar. Between the Schnauss record and a couple other releases, by
confidence in CCO has been serious shaken. They were completely on point
until the last year. CCO was my favorite label of 2000.

That being said, I still think Christian Kleine is one of the most important

Complete disclosure: I have a 7 on City Centre Offices that came out at the
end of last year.

I thought Ulrich Schnauss's record was uplifting and beautiful. It has a
real sense of hope and joy about it, which is rare in these days and times.
Sure, it's a fine line between happy and cheesy for some people, but for my
money, it's on the good side of that line.

My biggest criticism is that it's a little obvious in a few spots (a drum
loop or two that I could have done without), but on the whole, i think it's
lovely.

That being said, I still think Christian Kleine is one of the most important
and unrecognized figures in German electronic music.

We can agree on that one. His guitar playing on Tides is great, as is much
of the rest of his work.

Hmm, not a lot of 313 relevance here, I suppose. Sorry.

Re: [313] Ulrich Schnauss

2002-02-22 Thread Mike Taylor
I see where you are coming from Bill, but my problem with it is not that it
is uplifting, but that it strikes me as being contrived. Tides was uplifting
in parts, but not in a cheesy way. Trains strikes me as being an attempt to
do another version of Tides, but it missed the point.

I feel like the record is trying to make me feel happy, you know what I
mean? I know that he is professional producer(he was in FM a couple issues
ago...) and that he is just trying his hand at this music, and like another
poster said, it comes through in the record. There is just something that
struck me as being seriously wrong with that record the minute I heard it,
and I have tried to get my head around it with no success.

In hindsight, I was probably more vitrolic than I needed to be. The bottom
line is that it might be a good record, but there is a lot of other material
in the CCO catalog that is more deserving of listmembers attention. I would
probably be a lot more tolerant of it's shortcomings if I recieved it as a
promo, but I paid for it and my 17 bucks could have been much better spent
elsewhere. YMMV

Take care,
mt

As with much of our music, varying waves of appreciation come with
repetition, differing contexts and an open mind ... whilst you're justified
to dismiss it after one or a few tries, many would advise trying again -
there's nothing shallow about that LP - a track like Djamel et Jamshid took
me 3 months and a failed relationship to really know!

Try one more time, you're missing a sublime talent :o)

[313] ROB HOOD ON PEACEFROG

2002-02-22 Thread Stuart Thomas
Since a few of you were asking about the logistic mix album I thought you
may be interested to know he’s also done a new album for Peacefrog. Only had
a quick listen so far but it sounds good to me. Pretty much the usual stuff
you’d expect, quality minimal Detroit sounds from the man. Not sure when it’
s due to come out but definitely one to look out for I reckon.

Laters,

Stu.

This was by far one of the best shows I've seen in Detroit in a long
 time...

Shame on anyone living in Detroit for not seeing this.

Porter Street has it going on ...recognize...

Even Mad Mike and Pennington was having a good time! Eric was there as
well
 (DJ Bone)

I know a lot of people on this list are not in Detroit but those that are
 have no excuse...let's do this...!

Is anyone else noticing this recurring best show I've seen in Detroit in a
long time response to Porter Street gigs almost every week now? The only
reason I can think there shouldn't be a long line to get in is b/c there's
some good competition from Necto, which also seems to be going great, but
this is in Ann Arbor! Porter Street is a great venue with good sound, good
drinks and very importantly, a good crowd. Look at these lineups! This seems
like the cure to the weary club-goers ills in Detroit. Thursdays or not, if
I was in Detroit I'd be there in an instant - it's not like it's on a
Tuesday... I haven't heard a single bad review. You guys are making me
jealous.

[313] Cardiology

2002-02-22 Thread Jesper Kling
Hi,

I'm usually just a reader of the 313 list, but this time I can't keep from
posting a message. I just got the new Recloose album in my hands and it's
just as good as expected! The album is a perfect connection between old
school Planet E / Theo Parrish / West London and more dubby stuff, and it
looks right into the future. It's, of course, very mellow and perhaps with a
bit more downtempo stuff than expected, but it works out really well.

Here's the tracklisting:

1. Ain't Changin'
2. Ghost Stories
3. Can't Take It
4. Kapiti Dream
5. Up and Up
6. Procession
7. Get There Tonight
8. Permutations
9. M.I.A.
10. Absence of One
11. Cardiology

[313] Rother

2002-02-22 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Not sure if this was mentioned, but given the recent talk of him on here,
here's some info I just received about the Psi49Net comp coming this or next
month:

ANTHONY ROTHER pres.
ELEKTRO COMMANDO/WELCOME TO PSI CITY3xLP/CD
(PSI49NET - LABEL COMPILATION)

Now here is what all die hard electro heads have waited for: 'Electro
Commando 1 - Welcome To Psicity'. Anthony Rother and Germany's most prolific
electro label PSI49Net finally open their vaults to present the ultimate
electro collection of new and unreleased material. Two CDs, 25 tracks (most
of them unreleased!), introducing lots of new LITTLE talent and projects as
well as some of the recent highlights that have gained the label such an
enormous reputation worldwide. Both as an artist/producer and ar for the
label, Anthony Rother once again proves to be the man with the midas touch
and the driving force of the genre. 'Electro Commando 1' includes some of
the greatest moments of the label's discography such as Rother's very own
remix of Little Computer People, his visionary and genre defying
Simulationszeitalter, Froyd's Kleiner Engel, and on top of that some
excerpts of the highly acclaimed Netzwerk series (Netzwerk Florida, Netzwerk
Europa and Netzwerk Frankfurt). And if these were not enough to put together
a compilation more than worthy, this double cd offers more than fifteen
unreleased tracks! Regarding these new projects CD 1 starts off with Rother'
s anthemic 'Psicity' title tune, followed by truly refreshing material by
upcoming artists such as Psylocity (check out their breathtaking machine),
Labor E, Christian Berg, Boris Divider and Studio 3, to be completed by
Rother's much sought after God Of The Gods. The second CD features not
only the newest Netzwerk Frankfurt outing entitled A661, Psylocity's
haunting Psylocity and Friends and Froyd's weird Weisses Rauschen
(Psych. Mix), but also great efforts by Anthony's new signings Mulletronic,
Frequenzberater, Növö, Si-Com (with an impressing slo mo-electro cut called
Lost Pli) and Muzzfuzz (Like You, simply beautiful!) that will
definitely create a buzz within the worldwide electro community. PSI49Net is
proud to welcome these new inhabitants to downtown and uptown Psi City. A
turning point for Anthony Rother and his label, and a must have release for
all hardcore PSI-followers as well as fans of electronic music in general.
Essential!
