(313) more store closings? (and some radio topic)

2003-10-01 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I saw this on a website that I visit often-

With Groovetech and Higher Source recently closed, and another online
store about to close...

so, anyone know of more online record websites closing down?

damn, two of my lifelong dreams dashed on the rocks of the economy - owning
an independent record shop and DJing for a freeform radio station
not really a good time for either of them

actually, I was reading in Mojo (which the newest one is about Detroit rock
but there is a very brief article on techno - it's on of those primers
we've all read 1,000 times by now) that there is some court case - I think
involving the Dixie Chicks and Bruce Springsteen that might just force
ClearChannel to give up some dial space on the radio? Which would make room
for some independent radio stations

anyone heard about this?

RE: (313) Dub

2003-10-01 Thread Benn Glazier
Another interesting interpretation that I think has been missed.

dub
v. dubbed, dub·bing, dubs
v. tr.
To thrust at; poke.
To beat (a drum).

v. intr.
To make a thrust.
To beat on a drum.

n.
The act of dubbing.
A drumbeat.

[Perhaps from Low German dubben, to hit, strike.]

Dub is short for double, no? ie copy/transfer? I work in television and
the word dub is used to describe any copy of a master tape. Dub also
means to strike/hit with a sword - ie The Queens does it when she
knights people. There will a plethora of varying etymologies of the word
cos it is a very simple 3 letter word with many possible origins.

yeah, words like overdubs for example... I always though it was a
  derivation of duplication, because you were adding a second track ;
this being said, it might be the Jamaican origin... or both words have

a common and very ancient origin, with always that idea of having

Very vry interesting and intriguing. One bit jars though:

Indeed, dub is rooted in the word dup, which is Jamaican patois
  for ghost.

I'm not denying the meaning or existence of the patois word 'dup'
(I've heard a word which seems to derive from it, 'duppy'). But I

the term 'Dub' as applied to reggae and eventually to any

another word for recording, especially making a copy of an existing

Try www.inthemix.com.au and pick up 3D World mag free on the streets

Good stores are in Oxford St area, like Reachin' and BPM. You'll find some

i recently bought a comp on soul jazz records named the studio one
story. 2x12 with some great music. it also came with a 4 hour dvd with
interviews with almost everyone who is anyone in reggae.

they interviewed an engineer from studio one and he explained the term
dub as when jamacian dj tosted over record they turned out the vocal
track, so some of the dj were able to get into the studio and record
there version with the orignal music and there vocal. some times they
would add sounds from other popular songs through tape to tape transfers.

the main person they interviewed was clement coxsone dodd. this guy
is genius imo. started a studio one back in the 50's and recorded most
of the classic ska/reggae/dub artist. he also talked about how
jamacian dj would scratch the labels off records, (this was back in
the 50's) how they built big sound systems, had parties until the
early morning and how he to beat the of other jamacian dj getting the
same records as him went into a studio and recorded his own music to
dj. so no one else would have it.

sound familiar??

any websites that have photos of the records or the center labels?

Speaking of dub, Pole played a live dub influenced set here in San

the toy keyboard harmonica popularized by Jamaican dub artist Augustus
Pablo. The sound was more roots dub style than when I've seen him
previously. Also much more of a traditional live music set with lots of
solos and silence in between tracks, for better or worse. It was a bit too
slow for my tastes, but entertaining. He also had a Nord Modular keyboard,
a laptop running Logic and some effects pedals (sorry no vintage tubby

those guys were bonkers! real innovators. making record decks so they could
mix, making effects units, playing things at the wrong speeds so they
sounded sooo different etc. Mental. dj booths that moved on lifts so they
could access dancefloors on different levels of the club, it goes on, I was
gobsmacked.

I am presuming (perhaps wrongly I suppose), that some of the bigger name US
dj's of the early '80's must have (possibly indirectly) heard/known about
these guys in Italy. The similarities are there anyway.

and, someone, somewhere must have started importing european records in to
the US (so where did they hear them first?), therefore for the dj's to
play, therefore influencing our favourite artists? (or some of them).

I presume.

I could of course be horribly wrong.

Maybe when the US guys get out of bed, one of them might pop up and tell me
I'm talking a load of bobbins.

p.s. thanks for the link!!

to start, just look for anything produced by bobby orlando or claudio

prolific italo producers...bobby o's stuff got played everywhere (even kdj
has sampled him rather obviously..) and dunno about claudio but he shoulda
been...so look for their names in the credits...not considered true italo,
but of course you wanna hunt down kano and gino soccio stuff too, always big
in detroit and chi and well wherever cus its hot..also ditto the scotch,
klein mbo etc reccomends from alex...doctor's cat has 2 or 3 classic
songs...there is loads of good stuff out there the lsit goes on and on.

also there ARE italo pages out there, such as katya casio's (of hong kong

http://cultheroes.com, and
http://www.geocities.com/euro_beat_80/eurodisco.html ..google italo disco
and you'll find lots.

Re: (313) classic Italian records

2003-10-01 Thread alex . bond

Morning.
apologies if I'm a t**t today, I'm in an extremely bad mood. In fact, next
person to ask me to do something at work gets it big time.
oh dear.

also, before I start this rant, a disclaimer - I am generally a
mis-informed sort of person, and tend to put two and two together and come
up with 35 sometimes as I have a 'creative' imagination.

please tell me if I am talking a load of s**t - there are far more
knowledgeable people on this list than me who may (and should ) be able to
correct me - I'm guessing at half of it from what I've been told and
read

curious to know which ones have found their way into Detroit techno
house
DJ sets and those that have become classics within Detroit parties

Erm, do you mean in modern times or days gone by?
well, I'm not from detroit and have never been to detroit, but Juan seems
to play Martin Circus 'disco circus' quite a bit. mind you, is that an
italian record? I think he was french. Pah, I should just go back to bed
and be done with it today.

I guess some of the influence in the first instance came from US radio
jocks (hot mix 5, mojo, who are the others? help!!) picking up the italo
stuff on import and tanning it over the airwaves, then it seeped into the
clubs (via ron hardy etc?), and then obviously influenced various peoples
music. From what I can gather, there was a pretty healthy scene in rimini
and lake garda in Italy, this started early, around 76 I think. I'm not
sure how some of 'their' records (the records they played, not made)
managed to make the jump over the atlantic, but they did somehow. also at
this time there wasn't much of what we now call 'italo disco' (ie that
electronicy sound) but it was an attitude I think - taking mad new wave
records, playing them at the wrong speed etc, basically just sort of
creating a wild sound with what you have available to you. My main interest
at the minute is finding out how the records got to the US (they never made
it to the UK in big numbers) - who was bringing them over and why, who were
the first jocks to pick them up? Maybe a knowledgable US person may be able
to help. were the hotmix crew/ron hardy/mojo etc first to be playing them?
or was there someone before?

anyway, back to the question - the classics.

maybe someone else is better answering that... (I can't answer any q's
relating to detroit!), but obviously Klein MBO, robotnick, my mine,
scotch etc are good places to start.

also, web pages and stuff - I never really found a good italo page (I
probably haven't looked hard enough), but theres great resources on
tigersushi, also really a great place to start is the deephousepage by
checking hardy/hotmix mixes out.

erm, so is that any help? dunno, hope it is.

alex
