liked what I heard. I had Dopplereffekt & Arpanet on shuffle and they both
sounded great to me.

RE: [313] Baby Ford / Zip

2002-05-17 Thread Gary_Girard

Esp. when you have records that are maybe hard as nails and 'straight'
techno.. you have to inject some funk into them with the way you play them
in a mix, because on their own, (just cleanly mixing one into the other)
tends to be pretty funk-less, or at best just a tad boring or uninspired...
That is why to me I love hearing Claude Young, because what he plays tends
to be harder than I'd buy/play, but the crazy funky stuff he does in the
mix really ads that funk that's IMHO missing from some of the individual
tracks themselves. Rob Hood and Jay Denham are less tricky than Claude,
but without a doubt their DJ styles also adds trenemdous soul and funk
beyond what the records themselves were 'born with'. IMHO, far too many
DJs select a set by what is easy to mix, not by how great the tracks really
are *on their own merit*.

Couldn't agree more with these comments from Matt. I think exactly the same
way which explains why I get bored with just hard, minimal blended techno
sets but love hearing Dave Clarke adding more to minimal records with
doubles, drop-ins, EQs, cut & scratch etc. So we have Claude Young & Dave
Clarke that can mix techno in that style but are there any others?? If
there are then please tell me and I'll look out for them.
On the issue of who understands mixing better than who - I think anyone
that owns a set of turntables should appreciate mixing that requires a
higher level of skill.

I think fans of Detroit techno get spoiled by the incredible skills
Detroit DJs have. Its something far more important to Detroit DJ culture
than European DJ culture (yes, there are a lot of exceptions)

uh...that why i said there are a lot of exceptions.

It's still one of the lamest comments I've ever seen posted on 313. What is
this theory based on ?

Just thought I should warn you all that I received an e-mail titled 'thanks
for the virus' from someone I don't know and didn't e-mail in the first
place. This person just forwarded me the message details and the mail was
titled 'Terms & Conditions.' Someone else on 313 also received an e-mail
from me titled 'A Funny Game' that I didn't send out either.
I asked my friend Mike (also on the list) what he thought and this is his
response ...

There is a virus floating around on the internet which I found on my PC the
other night.

Think it may be worth posting something on 313 board.
I found it lurking in my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory (on your work PC it
may be in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 subdirectory and it has an icon of a bear.). I
cannot remember what it is called - it has some odd name - a jumpble of
letters but the icon is of a bear.

Apparently it is not found by Norton Utilities nor by McAfee which are the
main two virus scans in existence.

I will get the details off the e-mail where I was notified of the virus and
post also to 313 tonite

= = = =

Also - a virus may well have infected someone else's PC on 313 which will
then have found your e-mail address in amongst the names and sent out a
message in your name to everyone it can find in its address book.

Check http://www.third-ear.net/music/publicheroes/#

>From Detroit comes longtime DJ and Producer Alton Miller with releases on
KMS and Planet-E to his ever growing list of prodution credits. Gilbert
Cohen (or Gilb-r) has championed the French house / hip-hop / drum & bass
sound on his own Versatile label (responsible for I:Cube amongst others and
his own Chateau Flight, DJ Gilb-r and Cheek releases), and has become a
world renowned DJ in his own right.
In the lounge we see Berlin in the house as Thomas Fehlman, Gudrun Gut and
Daniel Meteo bring the Ocean Club electro-pop-click-techno-house sound to
the capital with Bus from Berlin / Pole's Scape label playing live. A.J
Letty holds the whole thing together, with Nick Craddock in support.

In 1991 Alton recorded his first release, Pleasure Baby, for Serious
Grooves/KMS. I Like Having You, his second release
recorded for Cyren is considered a classic among House djs worldwide. This
single was also a debut for his vocal talents.
Alton's third single, Dusk, recorded under the pseudonym Aphrodisiac for
Serious Grooves/KMS was critically acclaimed on both European and North
American charts. Since his early recordings, Alton has amassed worldwide
success and exposure as a House producer/dj.

For the last two years Alton has been busy releasing singles/EPs for
various independent labels. Guidance Recordings and BPM Records were
plateaus for Alton's inner growth as a musician and songwriter/producer.
The Rare Source EP recorded in Paris for BPM charted in Muzik's 100 top
songs of 1996. Past releases include recordings for Carl Craig's Planet E,
Distance Recordings and Orange Dance Company.

Alton has teamed with one of Detroit's premier playwright and songwriting
talents, Dorothea Sharon on their debut single "Glory" for the Japanese
based label LifeLine records. His album for Distance Records is received
rave reviews for it's musical representation of everything that is dance
music. Also, look for his Lifeline album called closer to be released early
2002. Also, he has a King Street project scheduled for release in April
2002 called "Love Inside" He has also started his own label, Muse
Recordings which has one release to date under it's belt with another due
out in the new year titled "Look Inside." Alton teams up with long time
friend Malik Alston to form a production duo called A-Minor for this
project. Also, look out for another release on Trackmode records called
"Paradise" with remixes by Larry Heard and Kemiticjust to follow. His remix
credits to date are as follows: Sean Deason's "Allegory+Metaphor" on
intuit-solar, Jacob Desvarieux's An Di Adie on distance,Supaka Pooh's "Aya"
on Flower Records,Kenny Carvel's "Rise" featuring John Redmond on Music 101
and Lorca's "I Cry" featuring Mandel Turner on f-com.

>From 1989 to present Alton has toured France, Chile, England, Japan,
Switzerland, Portugal and Germany defining House
music to the world as he has experienced and lives it. Alton's intimate
connection with the drums and varied African influenced rhythms result in
compositions that move people physically and emotionally, and hearing him
dj defines what House music is all about!

In 2001 at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Alton played back to back
with Gilb'r, creating the soundtrack to an everlasting afternoon. Public
Heroes seeks to recreate that magic moment by once again teaming Alton and
Gilb'r together for a night of what promises to be ecstatic house
music..

When I first read this interview question I thought it was a little strange
(where did they hear that???) Interesting reply as well!

Clubcharts: Is it true, that you always check your audience by walking through
the crowd
(incognito or not), before you start your mix-session, to see what kind of
people there
are? (and to see which tracks the people obviously like dancing to?)

Dave Clarke: I think it's rude for an international dj to turn up 1 min before
they play, it
shows lack of respect for the dj the club and the lifestyle, very very
occasionaly that
happens to me due to late plane arrival and it feels horrible. I like to hear
the dj before
me and see how the crowd is reacting.

I understand your point, and I'll admit that it is nice to see a DJ
enjoying the party vibe.
My point is that it isn't a good reason not to go and hear a DJ. It's not
the most important thing.
Other than the bad attitude D.C is an excellent DJ.
This has got me thinking about other DJs that don't show much emotion
whilst playing. Surely there are a few Detroit DJs that have been brought
up on the mean streets and aren't all smiley and jumpin around when on the
decks? I don't remember Rolando being particularly jolly!

anyway, why does everyone have to be a 'hello have a nice day' person. it's
no real indication of character. and besides, i've always wanted to bump

Respect to Nicole! Couldn't have put it better myself.
If a DJ can DJ well, but they don't dance around or smile or say "Hello" to
you, then what difference does it make? Surely the only thing that matters
is that they turn up on time & then proceed rock the venue with excellent
records and top-notch mixing.
Dave Clarke has attitude and it comes across in his DJ style - that's the
man. It's what makes the DJ is is. He likes & plays brutal, hard, dark
techno.

It does vary from week to week and they do try to cater for all genres on
various nights. I'm sure the line-ups used to be a lot better but every now
and then a good night pops up there. It seems to take the really big names
(i.e Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier) that get the atmosphere rocking like
it should do these days but when those names do come to town it's a good
idea to get down there (in both senses ;o)
There's a Classic records night coming up with Derrick Carter on 20/4,
John Acquaviva on 27th but the one everyone is looking forward to is Josh
Wink (to mark his new release 'Phreek' ;o) on 11/5.
Torture records night with Billy Nasty & Oliver Ho on 18/5. Check

Anyone who enjoys listening to Happy Mondays or New Order must go to see
this film! I saw it yesterday and found it very enjoyable. Steve Coogan is
very good as Tony Wilson & the soundtrack is wicked. Some good Hacienda
scenes in there as well.
There's not really much 313 relevance but I'm sure there are a few on this
list that would really enjoy this film.

Whilst on the subject of Sonar (albeit vaguely) does anyone have any hints

far they're either all booked-up or too expensive. Even a link to a good

Did many 313ers go to Lost on Sunday night? If so then what's the general
opinion?
Personally I thought the venue was poor but then I'd been to it before for
a 'Together' NYE party. It's just a warehouse with poor sound quality. I
thought the queues for the cloak room and bar took the piss and why do
ticket holders have to que with non-ticket holders?
I didn't hear all of Juan Atkins but I wasn't impressed with what I did
hear. The 'train-wrecks' were terrible and he didn't even look confident.
Was this Juan Atkins or a door man who filled in for him coz he didn't turn
up?
Thankfully though Derrick May saved the night. What a complete contrast
from Juan! May had a lot of energy and his mixing was quite good. I think
both of them might have had to battle against poor sound (it was better
near the front) & no monitors but May was much better and more in control.
So to those that have been disappointed when Juan hasn't showed - don't
worry about it, you didn't miss much.

I think they are having fun
taking the p** out of the UK media myself.

They can take the piss out of who they want but all this talk of 'Since I
Left You' reminded me that I meant to buy that album a while ago - so I
just bought it! £8.44 as well! :o)
Obviously I can't really comment on it myself as I need to listen to it
properly but I like what I've heard so far.
The comments made about this album so far are interesting though. Does an
album need to be original to be good? What if you enjoy it but it's not
orignal? Should / would you write it off straight away? What do yo'll think
of Basement Jaxx & Daft Punk? They've both had lots of media hype? Are they
also extracting urine ? (cheers Mike ;o)

Gilgamesh - Trescore (I read about this one in a magazine it was described

Can anyone confirm if this is any good?

I had the pleasure of hearing Dave Clarke play an Electro set at Cargo in
London for World DJ Day on Tuesday night. I've heard him spin Electro many
times before but was wondering if many others on this list have heard him
spin it? When he plays electro it's much more about set composition and
less about tricks and effects. It was a good set (as always - imo ;-) & it
got the crowd dancing after a poor set from Tom Middleton (Destiny's Child
remix? What you playin at Tom???)
I get the impression that Dave Clarke Electro sets are limited to certain
nights (Headstart / Atomic Jam) so perhaps many of you only know him for
the bangin techno style he's more famous for. Hearing him play electro lets
you see things from a different angle and you realise that he's not all
just about bangin a tune in. Just interested to hear some other opinions.
BTW - that 'Sunglasses At Night' record was still in my head the next day!
Great record!

Thanks to those who responded to my previous question about Charles
Siegling. I heard him on Saturday and was surprised at just how good a DJ
he is. I was half expecting that he has a bigger reputation as a producer
because he's not too hot on the decks but I was pleasently surprised.
Paul at Innercity was spot on with this message -

he's wicked. 3 deck dj.
top selection of minimal, tuff techno
throws in a few classics and some electro
too. he knows his stuff

I've not heard anyone work three decks that well for quite a while. The
set he played on Saturday was up there with the best that I've heard. The
techno never got too minimal as it was nicely broken up with a piece of
vocal, some electro or a booty house track (DJ Deon "Shake That Shit"- not
sure if that's the title but you know what I mean.)
Yup, twas a fine performance. So to all you techno lovers that have never
heard this man DJ, all I can say is that you're missing out. Go and hear
him... now!

I'm not going mad, here it is ...

Unsatisfied with the beginning of the only mix of "Late Night", I can
remember deciding to fade in the level from silence for an introduction,
thus discovering a technical trait that I was use on numerous tracks in my
recording career. Tresor Records, Berlin later released this track on
Waveform Transmission Vol. 1 a few months later with a later sublicense to
Pow Wow Records in the US. The Pow Wow Records remixes included a few DJ
Pierre mixes as well as a more aggressive remix by myself.

RE: [313] DJ Sneak in Ann Arbor tonight.

2002-02-19 Thread Gary_Girard

I think DJ Sneak is an excellent DJ, one of my favourites actually. I've
always liked his style of mixing, the way he likes to 'bang' a tune in.
Another aspect of Sneak's mixing that i enjoy is when he takes an old 80's
pop record (usually something you haven't heard for years) and lays down a
house beat over it - this always gets a party rocking! He has some great
records up his sleeve, all the filtered disco House and Latino flavas, and
it's great when he decides to play some of the Cajual / Relief harder style
Chicago House. I've even heard him drop 'The Bells' which went down a treat
=) (313 link!)
Sneak is also a very good producer and remixer. I recently picked up his
remix of Giorgio Moroder 'The Chase' which I only learned of after a tip of
from this list, and I'm more than happy with my purchase (I'm told it's
quite hard to find now, I paid £8.99 for it.)
Yep, I've heard Sneak many a time and although sometimes the mixing is
slightly out I'd still rate him as my favourite House DJ.

saw Umek on 4 decks at EasternBloc (a record shop) on saturday
and while what he did was impressive (3 vinyls going at any one point) it
just wasn't that interesting. i think he was getting at what hawtin aims at
at
the moment with layers etc. but it revolves around the same kind of track
being played back to back with another of that type...

gimme bone on 3 decks anyday!

Here,here!

That's exactly what was wrong with hearing Billy Nasty, Umek (& his
'recycled' mate who's name I can't remember) on NYE - at times it just
seems flat and unispiring. I know a few Umek tracks as well so usually it
helps if you know some of the tunes but it really was a quite forgettable
set (well, night to honest - musically anyway.)
Now with Bone you have a DJ who knows how to mix up the styles and keep
things interesting! :o)

Adam F is damn good.

His tune, "Brand New Funk" is the tune that really got me into Drum and

I'm listening to the Andy C remix of "Stand Clear" as we speak, it's got

And his tune "Metrosound" is currently one of the most saught after tunes
as
well, it's only on promo. I want it bad, and Sheldon went ape on NYE when

And the guy who said that about Bad Company - who's he? Cheeky sod.

Well, Adam F is a guy who hopped into jungle/dnb for a little bit, made a
few totally innovative tunes (for the time), and then hopped out as fast as
he got in. He just said "this

before at The End and that was only about a month earlier. That time was
the first time I heard him spin and I liked what I heard, all good
dancefloor material. I imagine this style to be a more typical Pullen set,
somewhere in between techno & house but all excellent tracks to dance to.
After that night I remember going record shopping & looking for Stacey
Pullen material as I was so impressed by what I heard.
My point is really that he must have played a lounge set in the lounge,
let him play in the main room and you'll get the harder side of Pullen -
unless you're at Motor of course ;o)

I didn't flame either! You're entitled to your opinion - I was just
pointing out that a lot of people would not share that opinion (I know this
from the response I got when I asked a question about Stacey - he has a lot
of fans on this list) - that's all. Chill!

his the shittiest DJ I've even gone to see 3-4 times

I think most people agree that Stacey Pullen is a top DJ. I've only been to
see him once but he made me get off the seat I was sitting on and go &
dance to a great selection of solid tech-house grooves for the rest of the
night. I'm just waiting for his return to the U.K.
On a production note I can't really comment but I do like the remix of
'Air Frog' (the only record of his I own!) I'm gonna have to get this
'Theory Of Silent Phase' EP I think!

   THE HEADSTART EFLYER
   Saturday 26th January

THE HEADSTART EFLYER

Dear ./Headz,
Big thanks to all of you who made it down to the Xmas Pogo. Those that were
there heard Weatherall back to his usual "hard as nails" self before
Grooverider amazed the crowd with his House set; all while Queen and The
Jam blurted out of The Wall of Sound Room with much pogo'ing going on all
around club. Now that we have Xmas and New Year out of the way and we've
reached that time of the month again, you should have a couple of pennies
in your pocket for a few beers and a bit of dancin'.

This month, from Detroit, we welcome.
OCTAVE ONE - WHO ARE YA??
In 1989 after forming Octave One, Lawrence Burden and his brothers set out
on a collision course with dance when they produced the classic "I
Believe", and by the time they had set up their now legendary label 430
(named after 430 West Eight Mile Road, West Detroit's infamous
city/suburban border) off the back of the label's first single Octivation,
they had the full respect and support of established masters May, Atkins &
Saunderson and Randy Jacobs Was (Not Was). In the following years, Octave
One and others developed the 430 West label, favoured for hard-hitting
electro-bass tracks, producing a steady stream of quality releases,
reaching a summit for Octave One with the CD release of The Living Key (To
Images From Above), and with independent filmmaker, John Huff, Octave One
have produced Black on Black, a video interpretation of the Octave One
track.

Interesting Facts: They used to do the lights at Detroit's legendary Music
Institute for Derrick May and Juan Atkins. Their label 430 West released
last year's massive hit The Jaguar. Octave One are about to re-release
their latest offering Blackwater feat.Ann Saunderson which is about to
smash its way into the charts and its rumoured they will appear on Top of
the Pops which will be a first for Detroit Techno.

 . OCTAVE ONE
  TREVOR JACKSON

PUNK'S HERO
Trevor Jacksonhas been around for ages under a number of different guises,
the most well known being The Underdog. He is rated as one of the best
producers around and has got a punk rock attitude to match. Late last year
Trevor released his Playgroup project upon the world, a pure Electro-Punk
mash up featuring Number One Pt. 1  and Number One Pt. 2 which was signed
up by Astral Works in the States (also home to The Chemical Brothers
music). Trevor also runs a label called Output which puts out crazy Elecro,
covering tune such as David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" in an electric
fashion. He rarely DJs opting for the more basement feel in gigs but we've
managed to persuaded him to come and spin some of those twisted, punk rock
tracks at Headtsart this Saturday.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT THEN?
Death in Vegas front man Richard Fearless will be no stranger to all of you
who have been coming to Turnmills for the last 3 years. Richard launched
his career at the legendary Heavenly Social alongside Jon Carter and the
Chemical Brothers and today makes some of the finest music around. They are
just about to release their 3rd album this year and embark on their next
world tour so we're lucky to have one of this year's rare DJ appearances.
With the Cosmic Tom Middleton, the chilled out Kinobe, and Reality Check's
regular helping of visual stimulation, we're set for a great start to the
year. And just to mention, next month Headstart reaches its grand old 3rd
birthday in the company of Norman Cook in the main room and Ladytron from
Germany amongst others.

So there you have it!! A couple of corking months for your diarys, so we'll
see you all down the front...

On the subject of Classic Records, there's a record that goes by the name
(and this is a guess at the spelling) 'Anero' with the lyric "It's quiet
now." Does anyone know if this has been released? I've checked a couple of
sites under 'Classic' but can't see it listed anywhere. Excellent tune
though - It might be by Carter himself, I just don't know!

This whole series has been superb - an education! Goldie was entertaining
last night when he was saying how he made Derrick May sit in his car and
not say a word whilst he listened to the whole of 'Inner City Life.' I
didn't realize either that he's recognized as being the person that made
the first D & B track - 'Terminator' - even if it was unwittingly.

People with horns should be banned! Someone blowing a horn out of time (or
even in it) just ruins the sound - IMO. In the days of raves it was all
part of the atmosphere and didn't matter too much (I must state now that I
never at any time used a whistle or a horn! :o) but there is no place for
them at Techno events!
I can't remember who I was listening to now but when one guy wondered in
to the tent at The Essential Festival and started blowing his horn just a
short distance away from me I was tempted to go and tell him that he was in
the wrong tent!

Spot - on comment!

Any DJ would rather see the crowd dancing than standing there watching them
- the whole point of being a DJ is to get the crowd dancing!

"Mediocre" , "Train - Wrecks" - these are not terms you expect to hear when
talking about two Detroit legends, DJs that are regarded amongst the best
in the world.
If I go out to hear a DJ with a big reputation the last thing I expect or
want to hear are "train - wrecks" (I hope this means what I think it means
- clashing beats! :o)
The selection is the most important thing but I love hearing a great
selection mixed to a high standard - the standard you'd expect from a world
- class DJ.
I've said it before but I'll say it it again anyway - this is why I rate
Dave Clarke as the best DJ I've heard. The energy he creates from his
selection is second to none, as is the skill with which he mixes /
scratches / chops between two copies etc. A Dave.C set is value for money
every time - the crowd will always be dancing!

I thought "Pump Up The Volume" was excellent, I really enjoyed watching it.
It's good to the the people that started the whole House thing off and to
be able to put faces to names.
The last part of the show described how drum machines and 303's started to
be used on House tracks by the likes of DJ Pierre, and also how the
artist's got ripped off by the Trax record pressing plant.
Looking forward to the next one : - )

Someone just e-mailed some info on the new Carl Cox album, sounds as though
he's looking to 'innovate' now and is working with the likes of Roni Size &
Kevin Saunderson -

The as-yet untitled long player is set to include some massive names in the
dance world and promises some very interesting results. The concept behind
the album is to fuse Carl's own style with the recognised sounds of some of
the world's best-known producers.

Carl has confirmed he will be collaborating with MTV Award-winner Fat Boy
Slim on one track and Mercury Award-winner Roni Size on another. Plus there
will be other tracks made with the likes of Erick Morillo, Josh Wink, Neneh
Cherry, Christian Smith and Kevin Saunderson.

This is what Carl has to say about it: "I'm looking forward to the
reception
the album receives. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place with the
underground/overground thing, but then I realised that people enjoy me for
being an innovator. I'm trying to find a happy medium through which I can
build my reputation making music with and without people."
