Re: (313) speaking of stasis...
Yes i think that track also made it onto the Fake Fruit and Horrible Shoes compilation cd on Pure Plastic. I still love all the early Pure Plastic releases. They all had a great abstract techno-electro-electronica sound. Unfortunately the later Pure Plastic releases (starting with the Rue East, Ben Sims, and Kapla releases) tended to focus on more of a harder minimal techno sound. The same thing happened to the Ifach and Trelik labels. I long for the older abstract sounds of those labels... 20ft scarf is a killer track! Originally released on Pure Plastic 003 or 004 if I remember right Again makes me feel sad about the fact that Steve Pickton is not doing music anymore. :-((( Cheers, Arne Lance @ Inaudible [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: noticed this recently on some of the new release listsings... RE: (313) speaking of Pure Plastic...
I want to clarify my previous statement regarding Pure Plastic-Mark Broom-etc. I own over 150 mark broom-related records on pureplastic-ifach-rewired-uxb-theory-a13-3zone-d1-trelik-pal sl-new electronica-ferox-plink plonk records. owning that many broom records, you can see i respect and enjoy broom co's works immensly. my statement was in reference to broom's, pure plastic's, and ifach's more recent minimal techno outings which I dont like as much as some of the more melodic abstract outings in past releases. for minimal techno it is great stuff but i have lost my taste for minimal techno over the past few years. so i second eamonn's praise for the pure plastic guys. they have consistently released quality and often challenging undergrounding techno. I can't speak highly enough about the guys Pure Plastic. I've never come across as genuine a group of people in all my dealings with any DJs , producers and distributors over the years ! There's a really interesting mix of music coming out of their distribution now as well. They're not exactly the most in fashion distributor so it seems they tend to get overlooked in favor of the likes of Kompakt etc, which is a shame. Also.. Mark Brooms back catalog is awesome.. I'm still coming across new records and aliases of his all the time. Eamonn / D1 Quoting Kelly, Stephen [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Lance said: Unfortunately the later Pure Plastic releases (starting with the Rue East, Ben Sims, and Kapla releases) tended to focus on more of a harder minimal techno sound. i think that's a little unfair.. pure plastic itself still releases some very eclectic material, from the electro of pp061 to oscar mulero's 'a occhi chiusi'.. uxb continues to release the unexpected.. pure plastic distribution deserves a great deal of respect as well, if only for the support it provides to labels like d1.. i reckon the strength of pure plastic has always been that it can't be pinned downed to a sound, just a love of good techno.. check for a really diverse set of music, http://www.pureplastic.co.uk/distribution/latestreleases.php -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States

? It's a white label, 4 tracks with Sugar-Plum 372 0391 written on it in typeface. SP1 in the runouts. Nice techno! Any clues? thanks, jeff relavent info below from a Smallfish mailout back in november of 2002. mr pickton has (had?) close ties with the gents at smallfish and even contributed a track to the first Smallfish 7 series releases back in 2001. smallfish probably was the only place to sell those records. never found a copy myself. is it worth tracking down? (313) Re: In-Sync (was Frank De Wulf)
he's still running his quite large video production company, involved with productions even in America he said on a radio interview last friday, but as i asked him where he'll play further on, he said he just plays three or four times a year. it's just that people having him invited to play at Amsterdam and Frabic recently, and seeing people really enjoyed so much, that he felt reassured to do a mix set around where the idea of a Party is still in sync with his. Umm.. did I say in-sync? Their 'Storm' passed by in his saturday night set. What a track! Oh my yes... the builds on Storm are epic. I'm a big fan of In-sync, aka Lee Purkis', productions. Back in the early 90s he ran a great label called 10th Planet which featured a half-dozen or so releases all In-sync related with the best being the Android Architecture album. Lee also released a nice record on the Plink Plonk label under the name MASP and was co-producer for the excellent Joe Louis End of the Beginning album on Fragmented and Back to the Beginning 12 on Relief. Rumor has it (according to discogs.com) that the music on those Joe Louis releases was taken from a DAT given to Joe Lewis when he was in the UK in 1995 by Jamie Read. The DAT contained music made during a period when Read was recording at the studios of 10th Planet with Lee Purkis, Chris Hartley and David Manuel (the 3 of whom ran 10th Planet and recorded as Insync vs. Mysteron). Read was keen to have his music released on Relief, a label with cult status in the underground UK scene. He gave the DAT, which contained music that had been worked on by all four aforementioned artists, to Joe Lewis for the purpose of giving to Relief as potential material for the label. Some time later these tracks appeared on Relief as a Joe Louis release, with no credit to the people who actually produced them. 10 years later (2005) Peacefrog Records in the UK inadvertently released a further batch of tracks from the DAT on a 12 entitled He's Back and an album entitled The Return Of Joe Lewis, which was released on both vinyl and CD. Anybody know what Lee Purkis is up to these days? Also, any comments on the recent Joe Lewis releases on Peacefrog? are they like the Jamie Reid or Insync releases? it's surprising to hear that Peacefrog and/or Joe Lewis is releasing another artists work and not giving any credit to the original producers. For some Frank De Wulf relevance, just last week i took for a spin the Frank De Wulf remixes of The Orb's Blue Room, The Shamen's L.S.I., and Model500's The Flow. RE: (313) DEC/ White Elephants
ha! yes My Generation and i go way way way back. back in the mid 80s the store was located in Bay Village - the community where i grew up. each week i would save up my allowance and ride my schwinn bantam bike (with the custom banana) seat 5 miles to My Generation to buy cassettes. Oh the excitement i would get when i purchased the Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Yes, and Van Halen catalogs... fast forward a few years... My Generation moved to a neighboring community and a larger facility but i still spent all my money there. over the years my purchases changed from hard rock to classic rock to alternative to alternative dance to electronica/techno/house. i still remember the employees emploring me to purchase releases from artists previously unknown to me such as the orb, black dog, carl craig, model500, basic channel, art of noise, irresistible force, derrick may and aphex win. without their nudging i may never have developed the tastes that i have today. in the past 10 years i didnt shop at My Generation as much because Bent Crayon had opened and offered much more in the styles i was looking for. but every six months i would stop by and check out the 'cut-out' bins that lee refers to for some amazing deals. sadly, due to the digital downloading craze, My Generation closed its doors for good last year. it was sad to see another local institution close. its employees were longtime friends that help shape my musical tastes and drain my bank accounts in my early years. luckily Bent Crayon is still around and delivering the goods. ok, nostalgia mode off. back to reality... dang it's cold in cleveland today! ;) np: as one - elegant systems (versatile) cim - reference (defocus) b12 - time tourist (warp) black dog productions - bytes (warp) --- a rec my gen made me buy! I guess I'm lucky. I picked up both of those titles in a 'cut-out' bin at one of the local CD shops. Lance might be able to speak to this subject. The store was called My Generation [Westlake, Ohio]. They had a great habit of moving 20.00 to 26.00 dollar 'electronic' import CD's to the 66% discount bin on a regular basis. I think I got Tony Drake in 1997 for 10.00 and DEC that same year for 11.00 USD. Cheers, lrh -Lance- 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States

White Elephants Yes, I have never even come accross a copy of the original Soundtrack 313 in my record hunting. Re: (313) track req - d'n'b techno hybrids
'lo list, I'm doing this mixed compilation for some friends and I'm looking for a good techno/electro track that halfway through changes to drum'n'bass. I have one from the Jacob's Optical Stairway album on RS, but I'm looking for others. Any recs? There are a few Jacobs Optical Stairway releases worth checking out. JOS have quite a bit of detroit relavence as well. A few other JOS's other guises include 4Hero, Tek9, and the very detroit-esque Nu Era (check their amazing Beyond Gravity album if you can find it). Ok back to the JOS info you were after... * Jacob's Optical Stairway - s/t cd/2xlp (RS) 1996 (including a track co-produced by Juan Atkins) * Jacob's Optical Stairway - solar feelings cdep/12 (RS) 1996 (including two mixes by Claude Young) * Jacob's Optical Stairway - jacob's story cdep/12 (RS) 1997 (including Juan Atkins+Dave Angel mix) Other tech-d'n'b-jazz tracks i might recommend... * Innerzone Orchestra - bug in a bassbin rmxs cd, 3x12, 10 (MoWax) (includes mixes by carl craig, claude young, 4hero [sound familiar], future/past, and peshay) - the best mix is claude's 31st Century Jazz Mix on the 10 all released in 1996 * Florence - the vinyard 12 (Eevolute) 1995 (with nice peter ford mix) * Reload - autoreload vol 2 cdep (Infonet) 1993 (with amazing mixes by Black Dog and Global Communications) * Lamb - cottonwool rmxs (Fontana) 1996 (with nice fila brazilia guy called gerald mixes) * Sensorama - Zu Gast auf der Welcome Insel cd/2xlp (Ladomat) 1996 (claude mix is the d'n'b-ish track but highlights also include mixes by Born Under a Rhyming Planet and Move D) And last but hardly least... * A Guy Called Gerald: black secret technology (Juice Box) (one of the great d'n'b tech releases) * A Guy Called Gerald: essence (Studio K7!) (a few highlights like 'humanity' and 'fever' - good rmxs by black dog, ashley beedle, too) * A Guy Called Gerald: to all things what they need (Studio K7!) (new one. nice spacy ambient moods and less vocals) While on the topic of AGCG, anybody know if the Juice Box represses of the back catalog ever came out? gerald mentioned on his website last year that he was planning represses of them all but i have yet to see them. i've always wanted copies of hot lemonade, 28 gun bad boy, and all the other early Juice Box 12s i was never able to find. Also any reviews on Gerald's new Sugoi Recordings label? supposedly it will be more on the detroit-techno-acid tip. The first release on the label 'Flo-Ride' was due out this month. Any details or reviwes out there? ok, class dismissed. back to work for me... -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States

(313) A few reviews...
the other day i posted a few quick reviews i did on my idm-m list. i'm reposting there here because it thought my 313 brethren might enjoy them as well! first off - richard h kirk dusted off kirk's seminal virutal state on warp a few weeks ago and had forgotten how brilliant mr cabvo's stuff can be. ever since that time i have been on a mad hunt to catch up on his more recent stuffs to see if anything compares. i own most of his releases under his Sandoz guise and was delighted to see that his amazing 1993 release Digital Lifeforms cd on Intone was recently reissued with a bonus cd of additional material from the same period (now called Digital Lifeforms Redux). The bonus cd contains ten tracks of rare previously unreleased tracks all from the early 90s and featuring the same feel and, in some cases, sounds as the tracks on the original Digital Lifeforms album. The one track on the bonus cd you may recognize is 'Ocean Reflection' which appeared on the New Electronica label's Global Technological Innovations Unreleased Vol 1 compilation back in 1994. For those who haven't heard any Sandoz material, it's one of the best mixes of tribal flavored electronica that i've ever heard - poppy, groovy, and hypnotizing. Digital Lifeforms Redux, Dark Continent, and Intensely Radioactive are the recommended Sandoz releases... Other Richard Kirk stuffs i've checked out recently include Agents with False Memories, Blacworld, Trafficante, and his recent URP comps but, unfortunately, they don't have the same magic as his early Warp or Sandoz releases. Has anybody found any other Richard Kirk releases worth a listen? speaking of worth a listen... a was lucky enough to get a listen to the new Black Dog album on Dust Science entitled Silenced and i have to say it was impressive - 18 tracks of unsettling middle-eastern ambience and off-kilter acidic electronica adventures much in the style of classic TBD albums like spanners or bytes. as i listened i could almost imagine myself walking through the ancient temples of Abydos, Karnak or Luxor. i still haven't been able to find any of the Dust Science releases here in the states but am eager to find not only this album but previous releases Black Dog, Claude Young, and Shake. nice to see Dan Curtin joining the Dust Science roster as well... other things that have checked out recently... - LFO+AFX split 12 (Warp) Two legends each contributing two tracks of acidic technoid pleasure/pain to this 12. The LFO cuts are more in the driving acidic electro vein whereas the AFX cuts are more of the analog 303 wankery that we have been enjoying and/or hating for the past few months with his Analord series. in the end, fun but forgettable... - Alarm Will Sound - acoustica - alarm will sounds performs aphex twin (Cantaloupe) For those of you who enjoyed the Philip Glass remake of Aphex Twin's ICCT Hedral, this album will tickle your sweet spot. Alarm Will Sound (a 20-member ensemble) have delivered 15 orchestral recreations Aphex Twin tracks including Cock/Ver 10, Blue Calx, Fingerbib, Meltphace 6, Cliffs, 4, and Avril 14th to name a few. Some remakes sound familiar whereas some are totally alien but all are unique ways of revisiting the Aphex Twin tracks we all know and love. - Baby Ford - Very 12 (PAL) The prolific Peter Ford (aka Baby Ford, Minimal Man, Solcyc, Perbec, El Mal, Casino Classix, Brubaker, Sunpeople, Soul Capsule) returns with this fine minimal yet deep techno 4-tracker on one of his many labels PAL. The title track, Very, is worth the ep alone with it's smooth lush synths and 4-4 groove but the Ifach+Trelik-esque tracks Test and Percy are also the slow-building intricate acidic techno gems that Peter Ford fans know and love. A nice return to form for Mr Ford. and finally - Mikkel Metal - remix 4 12 (Echocord) Those into smooth melodic techno should be no stranger to Mikkel Metal. His releases for Kompakt and his own Echocord label have been highlights for the past few years and this, the 4th installment of his remix series, only furthers to cement his excellent reputation. Whereas the previous three remix eps featured remixes by Thomas Fehlmann, Dub Surgeon, Anders Ilar, Bus, Substance, Opiate, DJ Daniel, and Ars Deco, it appears Mikkel saved the best remixers for volume 4. This ep features mixes by Basic Channel legend Vainqueuer and 2 mixes by koln stalwart The Modernist + Michael Mayer. The Vainqueuer mix is as deep, dubbed, and melodic as you can imagine - a breat-taking piece of bc-brilliance. The Modernist mix has the usual germanic percussive precision and melodies that the Modernist is known for made ever better this time by the inclusion of some choice Marley/Tosh lyrics thrown in. The ep finishes with a nice gritty ominous shuffle-step mix by Michael Mayer but the gems are really the first two mixes. Hopefully Mikkel will reissue all four of the Remix eps on cd for the vinyl challenged out there. A highly recommended ep! enjoy! -- ---Lance 6099

-- Original Message -- From: Lance @ Inaudible [EMAIL PROTECTED] yes ohio was once home to some excellent musicians - dan curtin, morgan geist, jeff samuel, hanna, titonton, twine, todd sines, steve cinch, metamorphic, the 21/22 corp/elemental collective, etc... but many of those musicians have left for more musically fertile locations. i've been out of the techno loop for a few years so i dont know if there has been an ohio 'second wave' or not but i'm sure there are a few up-and-coming producers in ohio somewhere. we'll see if we can get them noticed when we find them! i think all of those cats except titonton moved away, and sleepy c quit doing stuff so far as i can tell. im uncertain but i think dan curtin might still be in cleveland but he seems to be maintaining a generally low profile. actually, dan curtin moved to berlin a year or two ago and his output has been steady since he left. i havent listened to any of his newer output (a dozen or so eps on Metamorphic, Inzec, Panhandle, Elypsia, Tuning Spork, Down Low, Rush Hour, Raygun, Groovetech, Starbaby, Native, and Raygun) so i cant comment on how they are but i did get to hear a nice remix he did for the Ennio Morricone remix albums on Compost back on 2003 - a nice loungy jazzy downtempo mix. other remixes dan has done in the past few years include mixes for Joshua Collins, Splinterfaction, Titonton Duvanté, John Tejada, Sims Dax, Pawel Kobak, Wayne Gardiner, and Morgan Geist but again those i have not yet heard. one other dan curtin tidbit, he recently signed to the Black-Dog run UK label Dust Science. In case you don't know, this label also recently released eps by Claude Young, Anthony Shakir, Fred Gianelli, Carl Taylor, Shawn Rudiman, The Black Dog, as well as forthcoming releases by Sean Deason, Vince Watson, Dub Kult, and The Dust Boys. For more infon on the label as well as some sound samples check: http://www.dustscience.com/ -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States
RE: (313) Black Dog/Dust Science (was: Ghost of 313's past...)
one other dan curtin tidbit, he recently signed to the Black-Dog run UK label Dust Science. Huh? I thought Black Dog just released for them and the label was created by Martin and Richard. From what I have read and heard, Martin and Richard Dust have joined with Head Dog Ken Downie as part of the Black Dog collective. So you are correct that not ALL members of Black Dog are runnning Dust Science but as you mentioned, Martin and Richard are. -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States
(313) Ghost of 313's past...
Hello all, Haven't been here in over 5 years but the other day DJ Horsepower + his lovely wife hunted me down at my office in cleveland and reminded me of the musical friends from the golden age (dj-horsepower, j-kleine, b-vanloo, b-bickel, m-taylor, a-duke, m-salcido, d-sicko, i-malbon, k-williams, m-Macqueen, i-ackermann, Joost, t-Cooey, m-clark, m-geist, d-potts, g-dickerson, mumtaz, d-madmonkey, s-Silva, e-rinon, o-Koppius, marsel, j-Braine, j-rice, brap, t-Churchill, d-clark, d-Plaslaiko, a-Bennett, p-Bense, spiceee, w-Lammerts, j-branch, k-Hackett, g-davis, w-Samuels, a-Michelson, j-bush, r-webb, d-siska, t-Herrmann, p-Wohelski, j-berry, bleed, to name just a few...) Since my last post on this list my enthusiasm for music hasn't decreased but my time and finances for it has. so i have some catching up to do and may be bothering you with more questions than answers for a time. I actually took a 3 yr hiatus from electronic music and submersed myself in old 70s dub and reggae (tubby, perry, niney, scientist, etc.) but recently i've gotten the electronic bug again so i'm trying to get back in y=the know-loop-groove. on a personal note, i've gotten married, have a home in the cleveland suburbs, and a busy career with Apple computers. Speaking of which it's time to get back to work but I just wanted to say 'hello' to all the old-school 313-listers out there. HI all, What happened to DJ Horsepower? He does not seem to be posting as much as before. When I recently talked with Horsepower he was also busy with work, family, life and did have as much time for music recently. but we both discussed our desires to get back into music more - time permitting of course. : ) -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States

Welcome back soldier. Great to see the names dropped, even if we have lost a few comrades. Thanks friend. happy to be back. maybe we can encourage some of the others to return as well. Dub is always a nice education, but the influence seems to have faded in recent years. Dub is still out there. Check the new Deadbeat release on Scape, any of the Deepchord/Rod Modell stuffs on Silentes/Deepchord/Echocord, and all the other Echocord releases (especially those my Mikkel Metal). Visit these links for more infos... http://www.techno.ca/deadbeat/ http://www.dctrax.com/ http://www.scape-music.de/ http://www.echocord.com/ http://www.mikkelmetal.dk/ if you want some legal feebie techno/ambient/dub from established artists, check out the Flow.ers compilation on the Sutemos netlabel. it features tracks from yagya, rod modell, octex, exos, and ozy to name just a few. nice stuff and well worth the price of admission - which is none. : ) http://www.sutemos.net/en/ Finally, one last thing about dub. Not necessarily for this list but... Those interested in classic dub/reggae who havent yet started purchasing any may want to check out the excellent UK Blood and Fire dub/reggae reissue label. They has re-released-compiled the best of the best by King Tubby, Horace Andy, Scientist, The Congos, Lee Perry, Prince Alla, Burning Spear, Jah Stitch, Keith Hudson, Tappa Zukie, Glen Brown, I-Roy, Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke, Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs, Max Romeo, Yabby You, Trinity, Dennis Brown, Jackie Mittoo, Ranking Joe, Junior Ross, Linval Thompson, Willi Williams, and Niney the Observer to name just a few. If you need specific recommendations i would be happy help but the real reason i mention Blood and Fire right now is because they have just marked down most of their catalog to 50% their original prices. Visit http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk for more information and sound samples. And what's happening in Ohio? The MI-OH corridor was once strong. Can it be rebuilt? yes ohio was once home to some excellent musicians - dan curtin, morgan geist, jeff samuel, hanna, titonton, twine, todd sines, steve cinch, metamorphic, the 21/22 corp/elemental collective, etc... but many of those musicians have left for more musically fertile locations. i've been out of the techno loop for a few years so i dont know if there has been an ohio 'second wave' or not but i'm sure there are a few up-and-coming producers in ohio somewhere. we'll see if we can get them noticed when we find them! -- ---Lance 6099 Creekside Lane North Ridgeville, OH 44039 United States

.. Detroit Escalator Co,: excerpts cd/2xlp (Peacefrog) Tracks: - Gratiot - Abstract Forward Motion (As A Mission) - The Inverted Man (Falling) - Force - Faith as Rain - Shifting Gears - Fate as a Chasm - Psalm - Orange So the Peacefrog LP's the Chasm 12 plus half of Soundtrack 313? Might check the Black Buildings EP then... that must be where the new stuff's at, right? Yes that is correct. New Kit Clayton record on Vertical Form...
. Kit Clayton: lateral forces 12 (Vertical Form 005) LANCE COMMENTS -- The ep starts with 'Izmit' a long slow-building mid-tempo effects-laiden piece of dub electronica that dwells the plodding experimental rasta-realms between Vladislav Delay and Various Artists. 'Quindo' continues the midtempo dub excursion but this time in a way more reminscent of Stefan Betke's more recent Pole outings. 'Nantou' finishes off Lateral Forces with a enveloping slice of bc-flavored downtempo dub. Another brilliant and relaxing dub journey by Kit Clayton from the equally as consistent Vertical Form label. To me, nobody seems to be delivering the experimental dub better than labels like Vertical Form and ~Scape. PRESS INFO -- Over a year in the making, Joshua Kit Clayton's 'Lateral Forces' ep is finall finished. Written and produced over the course of last year amidst a heavy touring schedule and a string of acclaimed eps, albums and project-based releases for a variety of premier league electronic labels. The results of the ep are what we feel are amongst some of his finest amd most accomplished works to date. Taking things to an entirely different level and approaching production from a variety of differing reference points, the ep details and documents the next level for Kit Clayton. Temporarily steering away from his more recent dub-flavored excursions for Stefan Betke's might Scape imprint, his work here for Vertical Form represents a much more advanced, tonal and digital side to his sound. Combining the use of sophisticated technology with raw basic groove composition, the ep effectively explores, twists and re-invents the ever-evolving sound of modern electronic minimalism. Based in San Francisco, Joshua works as a programmer for Cycling '74 - a highly regarded software company responsible for the writing of MSP, a set of extensions for Opcode's object-oriented MAX environment, a programming platform popular with electronic mavericks such as Monolake and Autechre. However, regardless of programming playing a significant role in Joshua's everyday affairs, software and the use of computer programming to make music generally plays only a verui small part in his approach towards production. Instead, programming is used almost entirely for sound creation and synthesis, with the addition of more traditional analoue, digital and acoustic methods for production as a whole. With an extensive knowledge of such techniques and platforms, his sound has developed with extreme maturity over the course of last two years and this release is an excellent example of this. The ep opens with 'Izmit,' a heavily delayed and compressed sonic bath of bubbling digital glitchery, layered with sharp intensive rhythmic structures perfectly suited for the more adventurous and discerning of the world's dancefloor environments. To follow is 'Quindio' and altogether more sublime construction driven by haunting melodies, tightly programmed sound constructions and a warm heart moving soulful groove. 'Nantou' is the ep's most experimental and adventurous piece, due to its dark superlative composition built around tricky, syncopated rhythmic structures and a minimal arrangement. In all, a challenging and uncompromising ep from one of San Francisco's most talented producers. Innovative and inventive in every possible form, combined with a fresh and exciting outlook on the current direction of techno, electronics and atmospherics. . Kit Clayton: lateral forces 12 (Vertical Form 005) Tracks: - izmit - quindio - nantou Release date: October 2000 Hope this helps! ---Lance--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

New Vladislav Delay album...
Sorry late posting the details on this one... . Uusitalo: vapaa muurari cd (Force Inc) PRESS WRITEUP - The prolific Vladislav Delay returns with his techno- inspired declaration as Uusitalo. Following the heels of the outstanding house project Luomo, Vladislav Delay continues his experimentation in other directions and genres of club music. Vapaa Muurari is a post-product of his Mille Plateaux release Entain. It continues where Entain left off, only on a different platform. Its imaginary club lifestyle music. The basic elements of his first release for Force Inc. will be available on vinyl for creative dj usage. However, the cd is another version that represents the continuous live mix of the music. Seventy-one minutes of groove is captured to tape and designed to give the listener a new perspective of election music. The tracks on the new album are again outstretched masterpieces with a deep affection for dub and spatial dimensions. His tracks are the finest example of music without a center, but music in its continuous variation, step by step. Music proceeds by disjunction and de-centering, disjointed polytheism. Lines, moments appear in sounds and disappear there are no themes, which are created, no bringing of a development of forms, but sound is becoming a force. Uusitalo is extracting vibrations, variations, modulations and decomposition. Again Vladislav Delays music is a crystal of space-time. LANCE COMMENTS -- Uusitalo is the Vladislav Delay guise that stylistically bridges the gap between his Vladislav Delay releases on Mille Plateaux + Chain Reaction and his Luomo guise on Force Inc. Expect the abstract spcaious experimental dub elements of his Vlad Delay releases mixed in with tech-house-tinged percussive elements. Vladislav rarely disappoints. RELEASE INFOS: . Parallel label comp cd...
. Idiosyncratic Expressions comp cd (Parallel Recordings, Ltd. 008) PRESS INFO -- After eight vinyl releases, Parallel is pleased to offer a cd compilation as release #9 (number nine... number nine...), including our faves (at the moment) for the last three years, two new tracks. From PRL-002 comes the 'alien sounding' Unexpected Visitor courtesy of Sharp and Williams as well as Burtt Williams's exquisite electro-disco (appropriately titled) 'Schizophrenic Disco.' Kit Clayton Jason Williams are I-Liner on 5-star rated PRL-003's S-Bahn. I-Liner also pulls into this station (number nine... number nine...) with new track entitled 'In The East,' a bit of deconstructed jazz funk from the t-dimension. The title track of Velocette's PRL-004, 'Memories for the Future,' has been called difficult to catorgize - techno jazz appears here again. Velocette also offers up 'Savannah,' a brand new, 6/8 electronic jammy for your inner hominid to shimmy across the mushroom dotted plains. Kit Clayton recieved high praise on PRL-005, in fact one writer called it some of the most inspired music i've ever had the pleasure of reviewing. We have here 'Box Section,' a boxy tech-house number 'W-Shape (Velocette remix),' with its shooting star murmurs motorized bassline. Keek (aka Timeblind aka Chris Sattinger), author of PRL-007, is represented here by 'Sodom + Gomorah,' a bacchanal groover suitable for play in either city. Velocette closes off this compilation with the rolling, melancholy 'I Feel..., also off PRL-004. Parallel is sure you all your friends will enjoy the digital convenience of this cd for enjoying sharing that Parallel Sound. So just answer two little questions before we go: Movin'? Groovin'?* LANCE COMMENTS -- Most of the Parallel Label classics finally see a cd release on this new comp. Despite having releases from Kit Clayton, Jonah Sharp, Chris Sattinger, Jason Williams, and Velocette, the Parallel label is remarkably underrated label but hopefully this comp will help the vinyl impared see the light. Check this if you're into various flavors of techno, tech-house, tech-dub, and electro-tech. . New Tomas Jirku release...
. Tomas Jirku: sequins cd (Force Inc) PRESS WRITEUP -- Tomas Jirku is the first Canadian signing and latest North American addition to the Force Inc/Mille Plateaux collective, further developing the freshly minded genre of Clickhouse and Click Techno. This release comes after his highly acclaimed release Variants on the Alien8 label. Prior to Variants, Jirkuy had made a massive impact online with his mp3 tracks on the Notype.com label. In fact, the Variants project spawned from direct interaction with fans and Jirku in the creation of the compositions by posting their opinions and ideas. Following this, Jirku would upload variations of what was taken from these interations. Czech Republic born Jirku uses a unique process of recording, completely computer based, that allows him to explore deeper into sounds. He tries to be subtle with his use of digital manipulation to add layers that couldnt be achieved using conventional studio techniques. Motivated by the extreme Toronto climate, and unlike the darker, cooler Variants release, Sequins was produced over the warm summer months, hence reflecting a more upbeat funky disco feel with fast tempos, bouncy rhythms and a more immediate sound in comparison to her previously heavy atmospheric compositions. Jirku meticulously focuses on the most minute elements in the rhythm and tried to stay away from the distracting elaborate bass lines that are such a usual main element in techno. Digital glitches are an integral part of each combination, where subtle distortions extracted from each element of a song continually enhance the rhythm. Many of the tracks on Sequins were composed as a deconstruction of funk samples using heavy digital manipulation and filtering. As Force Inc. attempts to revolutionize techno, Jirku composes rhythms and textures complex enough for listening yet upbeat and groovy enough for the clubs. Enter the glitch-funk. LANCE COMMENTS: After his excellent but relatively relaxed Variants cd on Alien8, Tomas Jirku delivers this album with more of an uptempo, straightforward, and floor friendly feel. With Sequins Jirku still applies his brand of experimental dub but this time around a funky tech-house/techno/disco framework. But even though this album is more of an uptempo affair, it still maintains somewhat of the relaxed atmosphere by keeping the percussion and basslines light. More solid music from Jirku showing his skill in more floorfriendly realms. Imagine a Farben Daft Punk collaboration and you'll have an idea of what Tomas has going on here. RELEASE INFOS: . M.R.I. are representatives of the emerging German minimal house scene. Their recent maxi once again recieved critical acclaim and has laid the foundation for this significant full-length debut. With 'Rhythmogenesis,' M.R.I. have effectively administered an injection that is exquisitely refreshing in a time of over-formulated generic regurgitation that much of house music seems to be steadfast in. This follows last year's quintessential release 'Makesnd Cassette,' a phenomenal example of interface design in music that earned them a nomination for album of the year by the prestigious Ars Electronica committee. Residing in Sheffield, UK, Mat Steel and Mark Fell continue to develop the aesthetic and conceptual anatomy of 'Makesnd Cassette,' focusing on virtuality, machinish and digitality by giving and introduction in minimalism of the 21st Century. 'stdiosnd types' is both more traditional and more abstract than their first album, aiming to reach further in each direction than ever before. In doing so, it highlights features from both the early US techno scene and contemporary digital compositions. Here, each tradition is used as a template, throught which snd trace lines of mutual opposition. By reducing musical components to a minimum, snd aim to address what exists in the bargin between the listenable and unlistenable. In this respect, their music articulates a dislike of the artistic environment they ahve inherited and resists the inward pull of the genre within which they are often placed. So, put on your headphones and listen to one of 2000's most captivating minimalist releases. LANCE WRITEUP -- SND take a break from their more rhythmic looped approach to minimalism on this new album in favor of a much subtler down- tempo pace. SND utilize all the sounds that you grew to love on their past releases but arrange them this time in almost a loungy minimal electronica style. Stdiosnd Types features a really nice twist to the SND sound and a style i dont recall hearing before. Is it jazzy microsound with warmth? Is is miminal lounge glitch? Whatever you want to call it, it's highly recommend and will be on my Tops List of 2k. RELEASE INFOS: . New Terre Thaemlitz release...
. Terre Thaemlitz: interstices cd/2xlp (Mille Plateaux) PRESS WRITEUP -- Terre Thaemlitz latest electroacoustique release, Intersteices (meaning small spaces or cracks between objects), ostensibly presents itself as an album about process. In particular, Thaemlitzs accompanying text discusses two processes called Framing and Systolic Composition. However, Thaemlitz attempts to complicate the formalist trappings of an album about process' which plague so many digital synthesis and electroacoustique projects by defining his recurrent use of these processes in relation to the intended socioanalytical thematics of his compositions. In particular, Thaemlitz is interested in using 'Interstital' sounds and compositional processes as metaphors for identities which exist between dominant binarism of sexuality, gender and ethnicity. The compositions in 'Interstices' raise issues of Transgenderism (including intersexuality and transsexuality), queer pansexuality, identity politics and the essentialist dangers of disenfranchised 'homecoming' fantasy. He also discusses the frustrations of developing audio discourse in a marketplace which repeatedly restricts fair-use sampling, arguing that musicians should be able to use sampling in the same manner that writers use quotations with footnotes. As usual, Thaemlitz undertakes these discussions with a critical eye to his own actions as a producer. As an award-winning international dj and long time audio experimentalist in New York's underground clubs, Terre Thaemlitz produces audio works which exploit the contrasting functions of music as a socializing force and a point for subjective release. Since 1992 he has run his own record label called Comatonse Recordings, and has recorded for many other labels including Instinct, Subharmonic, Caipirinha, and Daisyworld. Thaemlitz is also credited for remixes and collaborations with Bill Laswell, Jane Dowe, Material, Haruomi Honoso, The Golden Palominos, William S Burroughs, Drum Komputer, Adam Shaikh and Chugga. In critical response to the over-genrefied demands of the music marketplace, a number of recent releases have taken the form of genres typically not associated with Thaemlitz, such as an album of neo-expressionist piano solos (Die Roboter Rubato), and and anthology of electronic dance genres (G.R.R.L.). Meanwhile, Thaemlitz has continued to pursue his primary interest of direct digital synthesis though such releases as 'Couture Cosmetique,' 'Means From an End,' and 'Love For Sale.' Through the crossing of musical genres, Thaemlitz hopes to complicate notions of music's universality by approaching different genres as systems of representation, the signifiers of which may be engages at will and without the rigorous training typically associated with such specializations. LANCE COMMENTS -- I dont know if i agree (or even understand) the issues that Terre Thaemlitz attempts to address on his releases but I always seem to enjoy his music and 'Interstices' is no exception. This album features thirty tracks of electroacoustique-glitch-microsound- field recording-electronica that take the listener on a sonic journey that winds it's way though a variety of moods atmospheres - from dark and unsettling to cold and minimal and everything inbetween. Yes i just picked this one up the other day as well. Detroit Escalator Co Ibex releases...
After almost a five year absense, Neil Ollivierra has returned with a release of sublime detroit emotion. The first is a double 10 on Peacefrog called Black Buildings which features seven tracks of devine melodic string-laiden detroit ambience and electronica including his track that appeared on last year's Time:Space Transmat compilation. I cant say enough good things about this new DEC release because for me, the sounds represented on this release typify what I love about detroit techno. Definitely a contender for my tops of 2k. A full length DEC cd is forthcoming on Peacefrog and is said to contain several of the tracks from the above release plus some of the better tracks from his epic Soundtrack 313 album from years ago on Ferox. So for those who missed Soundtrack 313 the first time around, you'll have your chance again soon The second Ollivierra-related release is a 3-track 12 on Planet E under the guise Ibex. But Ibex is by Tony Ollivierra not Neil. This 12, which features three tracks, has the same soulful emotion as the DEC releases but adds more of a jazzy house/ disco flavor that Planet E has been so good at recently. First two Plug Reasearch split 10s...
Some more infos on the first two Plug Reasearch split 10s... - Plug Research Split 10 #1 Artist: Mr. Hazeltine, Divine Styler, Mr. Moto Title: Split 10 #1 Cat#: PR21 Track Listing: A1. The Pressure (By Mr Hazeltine featuring Divine Styler) B1. Making Sense of Yesterday (By Mr Hazeltine and Mr Moto) On the 1997 Plug Research release The Art of Travel, by Mannequin Lung, a very interesting remix closed the album. The track, City Lights, was redesigned by the masterful Mr. Hazeltine, otherwise known as John Tejada, and the vocal was delivered by the legendary Divine Styler, late of Ice Ts Rhyme Syndicate, and the author of several albums under his own name. This popular team is reunited here, and Mr. Styler adds his unique vocal seasonings in the manner which has earned him international acclaim. The track itself might be characterized as reminiscent of retro Chicago House. The other side of this release also features Mr. Hazeltine (Tejada), this time in collaboration with Mr. Moto, a jazz guitarist with whom he has been working on a post-rock project for upcoming independent release. Divine Styler appears courtesy of MoWax Records. - Plug Research Split 10 #2 Artist: Move D/Sutekh Title: Split 10 #2 Cat#: PR21 Track Listing: A1. (Mu) st (By Move D) B1. Present (By Sutekh) Sutekh is definitely a rising star among rising stars, emerging from a group of young, red-hot San Francisco producers with a hot-selling album (Periods Make Sense) on the Mille Plateaux label, following several years of independent releases on his own imprints. On this release he delivers a jack track titled Present. A must for the record case. Move D (David Moufang) proprietor of the legendary Source label, member of Deep Space Network, and perhaps the prime exponent of new-school Detroit techno sounds on the mellow, repetitive tip, brings us a track in his signature style titled (Mu)st. We think this track reflects Davids involvement in such projects as Cojoint, a jazzy electro-accoustic quartet with Jamie Hodge and others who have two albums in release on the Source label. This split 10 can be enjoyed at home or employed in a club setting, and will serve as a mood enhancer for all those early or late-night boogie sessions. - This looks to be a promising series of releases for Plug Research. ---Lance--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
Atom Heart's Holy house...
. Geeez 'N' Gosh: my life with jesus cd (Mille Plateaux) Press writeup: For those of you who know Atom Heart know that he stands for surprises - whether it be covering versions of pop classics, his recent latin covers of Kraftwerk songs, pornographic hip hop sung in Spanish, psychedelic ambient music or Japanese pop, Atom Heart has brought toegether a world of magnificent oddities unlike any other composer. Now you are confronted with an album that confesses the deep connection of it's creator: My Life With Jesus. Like so many other productions we know from Mr. Heart, this release basically provokes a questionmark of remarkable size. These questionmarks are ATom Heart's way to communicate to the listener... throwing or leading him/her into a realm of reference codes, styles, truths, fallacies, emulated or simulated realities. Now, you may have understood, that My Life With Jesus is not a record abou somebody's life with Jesus, neither is it a religious record at all... as Atom Heart's XXX album's not really about pornography. In fact like so many of his releases, this is not an album about anything at all. My Life With Jesus is a questionmark, by touching another code amongst thousands, Atom Heart is simply asking questions so basic as - can this be authentical? Like so many times fusing fringe aesthetics as well as alledgedly well known stereotypes, we are left confusted about what is real. My Life With Jesus represents an evolutionary step in the progression where the unessentialist sounds that were magnified on Clicks Cuts and the funky soul and grooves of House Music have collided. We are at the beginning of a powerful and unforgettable face, that heralds a revolution of club music for the coming years. Time for Clickhouse. Lance summary: Atom Heart creates eight tracks of dubby, quirky, clicks cuts-styled deep experimental house (somewhat like a housier DOS TRACKS sound) and combines that with male and female vocals - ranging from vocoders to soul divas - about various religious aspects. The vocal usage varies from nothing to full lyrics but they are typically used sparingly. Once again Atom Heart has created a unique listening experience which is more musicically appealing than lyrically. Release infos: . Geeez 'N' Gosh: my life with jesus cd (Mille Plateaux) Tracks: - salvation - i believe in Jesus - gotta pray - geeez 4 - soul of mine - jesus knows - talk with God - calling Jesus ---Lance--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
Luomo cd on Force Tracks
. Luomo: vocal city cd (Force Tracks) Press writeup: Luomo marks the return of one of Scandinavia's most talented and prolific musicians, Vladislav Delay. For those familiar with this critically acclaimed artist, he makes a dramatic transformation compared to his previous achievements most notably released on Mille Plateaux and Chain Reaction. But perhaps this is not so mus the case? Vocal City is an epic that follows the dynamic music released by such labesl as Playhouse and Ladomat 2000, craftfully adding unique composition skills he so exemplifies as Vladislav Delay. Luomo captivates a whole new essence to house music as we know it. The tracks are outstretched masterpieces that reveal themselves in song-like majesty. His deep affection for dub thant infiltrates all his music, once again gloriously mingles with passionate house groove in a manner that has not been so astounding since Basic Channel. By bringing in vocalists from his past days as a jazz musician, they create a soulful fire and warmth that interweaves with the music (rather than over it) that will dare to integrate with the present day clubs such as NYC's Body Soul. Whether it is to be heard in clubs, the fashion runways or in the living room, Vocal City is the perfect antidote. Lance summary: Six tracks (four previously released on the two Luomo 12s on Force Tracks) of soulful deep house/tech-house with sparing use of vocals. Right up there with recent releases by Isolee, Mathias Schaffhauser, and Markus Nikoli. Sexy stuff and a significant departure from other Vladislav Delay outings. Release infos: . Luomo: vocal city cd (Force Tracks) Tracks: - market - class - synkro - therightwing - tessio - she-center ---Lance--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

The Daily Struggle hot edition
Januari 4, 1990, Hotmix crashed on earth due to major spaceship malfunctions. In 0rder to survive on this planet the crew started importing and distributing music from sources as in Chicago and Detroit. When these sources dried up the organisation decided it was time to set her own standards. Everybody remembers the sabotage actions from Unit moebius and Beverly Hils 808303. Second blow came in 1995 when I-f and Electronome released almost simultaniously Portrait of a dead girl and No landscape The big bang occurred in 1997 when Hotmix released Space invaders are smoking grass . Right before this happened Hotmix joined forces with Clone to make sure the fundaments of both organisations were solid as a rock. Soon creators as Melvin White, Duracel, Alden Tyrell, the Parallax corp. ,The Brothers Fuck and many others rose above the opression of the political music scene and set a standard of modern electronic musical art, yet all compressed to cd format for consumer purposes. New Vertical Form release...
This month the Vertical Form label release part 2 in the Pub - Summer remix eps. This ep features two new remixes by Arovane and Nick Rapaccioli. Arovane's remix adds his warm lush electronic sound to the already sensuous original and Rapaccioli's mix is a great Kit- Claytonesque experimental techno-dub mix. Both mixes are well worth checking out but I think I still like the original mix on Pt 1 best. Here are the details on the release: . Are you sure you arent referring to the Ester Brinkmann edition in the Rastermusic 20' to 2000 series of releases? If so, then the release you describe is on a German label. Your description above sounds very muck like the 20 to 2000 series in which featured one 20 minute ep (on a 3 cd in a 5 case) a month for 12 months all done by different artist including Ester Brinkmann, Wolfgang Voigt, Senking, Scanner, Ryoji Ikeda, CoH, Beytone, Ilpo Vaisanen, Mika Vainio, Elph, Komet, and Noto. For the most part the series features experiment glitchy ambience, electronica, and microsound but there are some more techno oriented eps - the Brinkmann and Voigt contributions in particular.
