Don't blame Denise. I overreacted to something that really had nothing to
do with me.

Again, I apologize to everyone on the list for blowing it way out of
proportion.

True, you did say that, but you said much more and it's the rest of what
you wrote that I take issue with. Men and boys would likely talk more if we
received the same encouragement and support women did, but we don't... At
all. We're made fun of when we speak on what's happened. Our harassment
claims are never taken seriously when it's a woman we're complaining about.
A man filing a report against a female rapist is likely to be laughed out
of the station (this isn't speculation, it's documented to have happened).
So we keep it to ourselves and tough it out because, like male victims of
domestic abuse, there's zero support for us.

Is it really brave when you have the support of a whole community standing
behind you to come forward? Or is it brave when you stand up and do it
completely alone?

2020-02-22 Thread Mister Jones
So... I've been in therapy since mid-August dealing with a range of issues
and at their core was the fact that I had been molested as a child, not by
a family member, not by the Catholic priest I served under for three years
as an altar boy, but by two older girls, one female and one male classmate,
and as a teenager sexually accosted by grown women in my neighborhood in
Detroit. This shit reared it's head this late in life (I'm just a few years
short of 50) bringing nothing but chaos. It has destroyed my marriage,
wrecked my relationship with my kids, got me in trouble with the law, and
brought me to the absolute brink. It's so bad that I'll likely have to pack
up my things and moving back to Michigan without my kids, where I'll end up
living with my mother and stepfather... At this age.

Denise, this is nothing against you... I've been on this list in one form
or another for over 20 years and always have thought highly of you... But
these days every time I see a woman talking about rape this and that, as if
it's just a female-centric issue, I'm reminded that guys like myself are
told to suck it up and shut up... and I get royally pissed. Women in
general and society at large is pretty dismissive when it's a male victim
of a female but "OMG!!! The horror!!! Something must be done! Teach boys
not to rape!!!" when it's a female victim of a male. We're told that we
should be happy that such things have happened to us when a girl or grown
woman comes at us like that and that if it's a boy your age, well... "you
should have just kicked his ass". I've had to sit in silence for decades,
telling no one about it until it basically destroyed my life. My mother was
devastated when I finally told her, my sisters were in shock especially
since one of the older girls was from a family extremely close to us (their
mother is godmother to two of my younger sisters), my wife was pissed
because I never told her and she had often said I occasionally acted like
someone that had been molested; something I always denied. Everyone asked
"why didn't you ever say something?" not realizing that when you're only 7
years old you really don't know how to process something like this, and in
a society back then in the late 70's where this kind of stuff was viewed as
"coming of age" or "just a part of growing up" what was I really supposed
to say?

Denise, to answer your question I'll ask another: What happens when you're
a woman and sexually assault or harass a boy or a man?

I'll answer it for you: Usually nothing.

The world continues to turn. Maybe it makes the news if you're a celebrity,
law maker, or some other type of high profile person but you don't worry;
it blows over within a few days because nobody cares. You'll continue to
get attached to movies as a director and actor (just don't forget to send
your victim his hush money first). You'll probably keep your seat in
congress or your position as CEO but even if you do step down nobody looks
upon you as a lecherous sexual deviant; somehow you're viewed as the
victim. If you're a well known professor you might get suspended but you go
back to work when it blows over. If you're one of the few that do get
arrested, you get a slap on the wrist and very rarely ever have to register
as a sex offender.

While I get where the sarcasm comes from, Denise, I just want you to
understand that there are victims of this kind of thing that aren't female
and perps that are female. Guys like me... we're out here, we just rarely
ever talk about it. Typically we're too busy sucking it up to complain.

Sorry about the rant y'all.

This is the old Buy Rite Music over on 7 mile a block or two west of
Livernois. I used to go there weekly starting the summer of 1990 (when I
learned to spin). Lotta radio DJ's and Detroit artists would stop in there
all the time back then. I had looked them up by the old name some time ago
and found out it was closed, but from what I've read it's the same people
that ran Buy Rite for all those years, just under a new name.

Re: HAAi

2019-12-22 Thread Mister Jones
Well said Kevin.

I have a tendency to listen to older Detroit Techno because it puts my mind
in a place where I remember having fun and really enjoying the music. I
remember my first trip to a DJ pool with Charles Henderson in '91, everyone
sitting around this room full of records in a guy's house and giving every
single record 10 seconds to make us believe in it before the guy running it
put it back on the stack. I still have the three records I copped that day:
St Etienne's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" 12" with the MAW dub, Chris
Cuevas' "Hip Hop" 12" with the MAW dub (their first remix, if memory serves
me), and Ce Ce Pennison's 12" for "Finally". I used to love stopping by
Buy-Rite on 7 mile on Tuesdays for the longest. I remember my first gigs
around Detroit playing out in '91 with Rob Brown, Charles Henderson, and a
number of other guys at U of D, Introvest, and several other spaces on the
west side all the way up to my last time spinning in SE Michigan on Crush
Collision, Oct 11th 2001.

The music still brings me back to those places, and for that reason, I keep
listening. Sometimes you really just need a break from all the crap going
on around you, Detroit Techno, minimal, electro/technobass, and ghettotech
does it for me.

What's funny is that I've been bouncing around an idea for an EP centered
around that whole 90's vibe for maybe the last 10 years. I think I might
finally stop procrastinating and just do it. Maybe... Tomorrow for sure...

I find that if I've been listening to a lot of one artist, when I sit down

I've uploaded the entirety of Fat Circles Radio's 2002 shows to
Archive.org. If anyone (Chris Layne...) has any contact with Keto, please
let him know that this is up. I'll continue uploading as time permits. I
still have 2003, 2004, the Raygun release, and Keto's music to go as well.

Plenty of 313 content to satisfy anyone of us plus some other damned good

Suggestions for uploading an entire archive of mix shows

2018-01-23 Thread Mister Jones
Some years ago I downloaded the entire 2002-2004 run of Fat Circles Radio's
mixes and, IIRC, urged the list to do the same as it appeared that the site
was on it's last legs. It's since shut down and lately I've been thinking
that I should upload those mixes somewhere along with Keto's 4 tracks and
"Difference Engine" by Raygun (all of which was available on the old Fat
Circles Radio website). The problem is the entire archive is 8.2GB in size.
Anyone have any suggestions where I can put this stuff? There's a good
amount of 313 material on these mixes plus a number of those shows had 313
member Christopher Layne behind the decks as a guest DJ.

Very nice, and it's "Andreaen Sand Dunes" too, pretty much my favorite
track by Drexciya.

313 music in the oddest of places.

2017-12-15 Thread Mister Jones
Hey y'all... it's the member formerly known as Logic7

I've been on an old video game kick, particularly old vertical shooters
like Twin Cobra, Raiden, and the many bullet hell shooters from companies
like Cave. While getting my fix I ran across a game called Battle Garegga
by Raizing/Eighting. I'm playing for the first time a couple of nights ago
in all of it's early bullet hell goodness when I get through the first
level. The second level starts and the music changes and a melody of of
stab chords starts playing... And I recognize it almost immediately. I
played for less than a minute more and had to figure this out 'cause it
sounded like a direct rip of something I've heard before. I paused MAME and
hit Youtube for old Mills and UR, and I find the track: Jupiter Jazz by
Underground Resistance.

More Google-fu turns up the music from Battle Garegga; a double-CD composed
by Manabu Namiki, released last December. Among the track listing was the
name of the track for the second level of the game: Underwater Rampart (an
obvious nod to UR)

^^^ That's the original version from the arcade game. The game wold be
released for the Sega Saturn with a re-recorded version with different
instruments instead of the Yamaha YM2151 4-op, 8 part FM chip used in the
arcade game's system board (as well as the Yamaha DX100). With the
composer's name, I ran across an interview with him where he states this:

http://squareenixmusic.com/features/interviews/manabunamiki.shtml

"... I held a great admiration for techno music, and I had a good deal of
respect for the Detroit techno artists in particular: Derrick May,
Underground Resistance, and Carl Craig. The main programmer of *Battle
Garegga* was also a fan of their music. Inspired by their music, I almost
felt that I had something of a mission to take that energy and breathe life
into the game's music.

*Battle Garegga* used FM synth and ADPCM synth for its hardware. This
equipment was obsolete compared to the standards of other arcade games in
1995, so I needed to make full use of it to design the sound for this
radical new shooting game. I made use of all the skill I had accumulated
with this hardware at NMK, and I also studied Hitoshi Sakimoto's use of FM
synth carefully.

The sound of *Battle Garegga* was influenced by my friends at Raizing, by
Detroit techno, by *Summer Carnival '92 Recca*, by FM and ADPCM (YM2151 and
MSM6295), and by the game music of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Shinji Hosoe, all
of these people and things I respect..."

Since he's also done music for Cave (creators of my favorite bullet hell
shooters), I'm now on a mission to find anything else he's slipped into his
games that have a very Detroit-inspired sound.
