(313) Re: 35 minutes of Symphonic Mills
Oohhh. very nice... although I can't help but hear bits of Nights on Disco Mountain ;) The orchestration is really nice, but can't something be done about that drum machine? It sounds completely out of place. Perhaps it needs to be more the centerpiece, not just a part of the music, but the FOCUS, the symphony being more in the background. There's a few moments when this really works, and that's how/why it works at those moments, but for the most part it sounds like somebody playing their 909 on top of a symphony. Tosh
(313) Help Matthew Herbert
Here's a press release I just got about the new Herbert album: Dear All, You are about to be given the opportunity for assisting Matthew Herbert with his latest album – due for release next year. You are also about to being the opportunity to feature on it! Below, enclosed are the instructions. Follow carefully and then call the number to leave Matthew his message. DEADLINE: 29.11.05 All the Best and Good Luck !K7 Records Matthew Herbert and his Answering Machine: Matthew Herbert; renowned Jazz Musician, electro-acoustic legend, big band conductor, 90’s house warrior, soundtrack scorer extraordinaire, author of the highly influential ‘Personal Contract for the Composition of Music’, speaker for the anti-globalisation movement and the man responsible for the highly popular ‘Bodily Functions’ and ‘Plat du Jour’ albums is at it again….. Matthew has a new album in the pipeline. Similar to his previous offerings Matthew does not intend to steer away from his dominating, God-like use of the sampler, and the rule to which his music is created; ‘the use of sounds that already exist is not allowed’. A rule, which has lead to his music being created through the sounds of food preparation and household appliances, for example, instead of the monotonous, processed, synthetic beats of standard drum machines. Thus manifesting itself into an entirely original amalgamation of music and sounds. His latest release, the critically acclaimed, ‘Plat du Jour’ was created over a period of 18 months, and consisted of 30,000 chickens, 3,255 people biting on an apple, and a cheiftan mk 10 battle tank – to list just a few of the ingredients making up this epic release. So what has Matthew in store for us now….? To be honest I don’t think anyone will know until his new record is released, but for one of the up and coming tracks on this yet, untitled album, he requires your assistance. Yes. You! At the !K7 office we have installed a separate phone line, the ‘Herbert Hotline’, if you will. Unfortunately there’s no-one at the other end to pick it up, just an answering machine. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to call this number and leave a message consisting of a single sound. It could be organic, vocal, mechanical, natural – even bodily. Remember you’re dealing with a man who has created music from the recording of coffee cups and sewer systems, so the more original the better. These sounds will be collected on the answering machine and past on to the grand, musical conductor himself, who will fuse the sounds together to create a grand musical cacophony that only he knows will sound like. To add extra intrigue to this task you must under no circumstances state, or give any indication as to what the sound is. Should you believe that your contribution is worthy enough of credit and acknowledgement then you should email us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and your musical contribution will be duly noted. So go on, give the ‘Herbert Hotline’ a ring….. +49 (0) 32 22 1918 394 -- McIntosh Cooey - Twelve Hundred Group LLC - http://www.1200group.com/
(313) dj mixes + song ID
Anyone know any good sites with lots of DJ mixes? Specifically I'm looking for stuff by Tiefschwarz. On a side-note, I'm looking for a song, maybe not even released, but it sounds a bit like Underworld (the vocal style and feeling), throw in some 303/acid stuff, and then add a breakdown near the end with a really unsyncopated beat, it's a bit longish (8 min maybe), and it's POSSIBLY new Fischerspooner, maybe I should go check that out before bugging you all with this... nope, not them. Any takers? Tosh

Re: (313) Radio Fries - Don't Tread On Me
You're all far too bloody defensive. If you would defend your right to a free and open media marketplace as strong as you defend against a perceived slight against Matt's efforts then this would never be a problem. As John Osselaer previously said: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The set is from Switch Studios which I guess is a radio station in Brussels, --- That's national radio for ya. Studio Brussel is the youth channel of the national radio. Switch runs every Friday and Saturday, I believe from 8pm till the early morning hours. Granted it's a small country, probably the same size as the Chicago market that Matt services, but it's the idea. National radio is more mainstream than community radio is all that I said. I NEVER slighted community radio. If you have proof of a counter-example then I'll concede. Damn... Anyway, then Matt got all defensive and made comments like this: It's time people took community radio seriously as an alternative to the ClearChannel near-monopoly of programming. I disagree, I think it's time people took seriously the idea of PREVENTING or BREAKING-UP the ClearChannel near-monopoly of programming. And everyone who suggests well we have community radio and the internet blah blah is being disingenuous, because that is a position of RETREAT, and the englobulators will not stop and let you have community radio and internet radio all to yourselves, they HAVE to grow otherwise their share price stagnates and they can no longer raise money from the markets, so they WILL GROW into your nice little world, or close your little world down. Anyway, Matt, don't be so defensive, what you're doing is great, and you know it's appreciated, just by proof of the amount of support you get. Nothing would make me happier than for you to become syndicated and available across the country, nationaly, but until then you're a niche within a niche, just like I am. Somehow i missed this thread, sorry for the late reply Tosh. I appreciate the olive branch, but that attitude cracks me up. there was once a time in the US when people probably said House music was very very small niche when it was on the air here 15-20 years ago and guess what... it fired up a world phenomenon that is still a part of the dance music culture you celebrate daily. if you said that back then to the people Djing on WBMX or Hotmix 5 or whatever, yeah, they could have said why bother? -- at that time it was niche, they were playing weirdo italo disco that was already 5 years old to US radio audiences. they played disco after disco was dead. but but they made a difference instead, they mixed it up and did their own music and called it house, those radio shows fundamentally shaped the future of electronic dance music forever. It was the same way with Mojo. A lot of what he played was pop, sure, but he mixed it with a lot of local detroit techno records that people then wanted to check out, get interested in, or at least listen to religiously on his his show. These were major market commercial stations! Now, what has happened in the last 10 years with Clear Channel and the homogenization of radio programming options absolutely sucks, sure, but has only made the independent stations that much more fired up to keep doing what they're doing.it hasn't devastated the airwaves... yet We're broadcasting in chicago on friday nights, prime time 9:30pm - 12:30 am... how you define a very very small niche but to me that's a HUUUGE opportunity to turn people on. Do you want a prize? I gave money to community radio for years, including WDET in Detroit. But I must admit I only did it for the free t-shirts in order to look cool. Do I get a prize too while we're giving them out? Granted it's a small country, probably the same size as the Chicago market that Matt services, but it's the idea. You're wrong again. When you're talking radio and exposure (which you are by the use of the word niche market) it's not the idea, it's the coverage area and the number of listeners. -- Belgium has a population of about 9 million according to the CIA. I suspect that Belgium national radio has about the same potential market size as community radio in Chicago. So market reach is about equal. Chicago community radio relies on the community for funding. Belgium national radio relies on involuntary theft from the pockets of all Belgians, who are probably better off for it. This leads to being able to PLACE national advertisements for Belgian national radio, which leads to, I will ASSUME, a larger actual market, and hence reaching more people. How the hell you can compare taxpayer-funded national radio with community-funded community radio on a quantitative basis is beyond me. I can see comparing it on a qualitative basis; I bet communnity radio the world over is more LOVED than national radio. Not true. What you said was, ...What's even more remarkable is that this, for so many reasons, would *never* happen on American radio these days. (which sounds to me like marginalizing community radio) I think everyone that has replied were simply addressing this statement and giving counterexamples. And it's true. Garnier and Mills would *never* play on US radio which has a similar market size of Belgian national radio, and I won't even get started on those spoiled Brits with their BBC and how large *their* market is compared to any community radio in America. I think the problem here is my phrase American radio and since many of you here have, or help with, great shows, playing great music on community radio you take offense at this, but come on, you can't be so obtuse. Let me show you the absurdity of what you're saying: Tosh: Mills and Garnier would never play a gig in Zimbabwe, the people are too poor. You: Oh no they are not poor, look and Robert Mugabe, he has planes and cars and servants, the people of Zimbabwe are very well-off. Well yes, Mills and Garnier could go and play for Mugabe and friends, but don't be so nit-picky, honestly, it demeans your intellect. I don't have to wait till mills and garnier decide to get eclectic to hear sets like that. And that's what's really important. So instead of slagging -- I NEVER said it was a great set, I NEVER said anything about the set except that it happened and that I doubted it would EVER happen in the USA. The fact that you jumped on their set and criticized it speaks volumes. Damn, this was NEVER slight against Matt's efforts and everyone involved in community radio. It was a pretty obvious (to me at least) slight against the state of American radio these days, controlled as it is by two companies, but mostly just one. Perfectly defining American radio as that controlled by these companies would make my posting too academic, so I rely on people to realize that when I say American radio sucks I rely on people to know that Matt MacQueen is not included. I think that maybe it's time to face the reality that Detroit just sucks, on so many levels and for so many reasons. Detroit is a bit like a wife-beater; no matter how bad it gets we keep coming back for more because after every black eye we get Detroit always manages to give us roses and apologize. Anyway, things will definately get better. Africa Town will certainly revitalize the city, and if not that then the new stadium will *definately* do it, and if that doesn't work well the Superbowl is a Sure Thing because all the people coming to Detroit will be amazed at how the Casino has transformed the city and how great it is to get around on the monorail. (313) A possible reason for so much off-topic...
I would like to hypothesize that the reason there is so much off-topic posting here in the last while is because 313 techno is no longer being made in an amount worthy of generating a focussed discussion. I'll wait for half of you stop seeing red... I don't buy records, and rarely CDs. I'm just a hanger-on, so my perspective is not one based musically. But as an observer of this list I can say that the amount of on-topic postings as of the last couple years has gone down greatly. Why? The most plausible reason is that the availability of topic to actually discuss has gone down. Again, I'm not at the shops so maybe I am missing the wealth of new 313 techno that is there, pardon my ignorance. From my persepctive this looks more like a list of mostly like-minded people sharing stuff that catches their fancy which is somehow loosely related to 313 techno. This isn't bad. I like chatting with people who I can share ideas and stuff with. But the question still remains: has the availability of topic to actually discuss has gone down? After the weekend in London for the Richie/Ricardo spectacle I have a question: What exactly does live mean? Can the word live be replaced by Playing their own music? So this isn't directly 313 but close enough. Martin said: But I do feel this is to the advantage of the smaller player like Warp, but look who they have to deal with as well, US - 192K bitrate!!! Up yours So what's the best balance between cost and quality? The problem is purely economic. Data costs money to send, about a cent for one megabyte. So to sell one MP3 file of eight megabytes (a typical five minute track at 190kbps) costs eight cents purely in data costs. Add on the cost of maintaining the website, and the cost of making sure that the artist gets their share of the sale. Suddenly that 99 cent song you just bought has a cost of 50 cents. Split that 50/50 with the artist and everyone makes 25 cents. As you can see nobody is going to get rich any time soon. Now using a lossless codec will reduce the file size maximum by 50%, this is the best case. So the same song above suddenly is 40 megabytes, and costs 40 cents to transfer, which means that the 99 cent song actually costs 86 cents. As you can see it's more expensive, so you have to charge $1.50 for the song, but that's a lot of money for one song, especially when people think about how much a CD cost. One song $1.50, ten songs on a CD, that's still $15, same price as a CD, people will be pissed that you are trying to rip them off. It's also more risky. If you are downloading your 40 megabyte Lossless song and halfway through the connection breaks, then it has to be downloaded again, adding 20 cents to the cost. And we know that connections break often enough for this to be a problem. I would be very interested to hear any ideas to work around this problem. Tosh
(313) Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Drexciya and more on iTunes...
It looks like techno is coming to iTunes Music Store. Tresor, has delivered their top 15 releases to the store, so expect to see Mills, Drexciya, Surgeon, Landstrum, Beltram, etc, shortly. Another client, !K7, now has it's first catalogue offerings on the store. Other labels who I have organized are Sonar Kollektiv/Jazzanova, Gigolo, and Plus 8/MINUS. Should be interesting soon... (313) The truth about missing the point and clarifying
It always amazes me just how bad my writing is. For how else can so many people mis-interpret my meanderings. Anyway, Jeff had some good points, so I think I need to clarify. First, to everyone who thinks I am bagging laptop shows, that is not the case. A laptop is a tool to do something, the laptop does not sing and dance for you, nor will it be scoring groupies afterwards, although oddly enough the damn things can still get viruses, but I digress. It's only a tool, so just as an Apple Mac won't make you a better designer, a laptop won't make a boring performance. Second, Kent decided to bring up Fred Gianelli. I don't know why. I have never heard anyone describe his performance as boring (well maybe his ex-girlfriend ... laugh Fred laugh ...) and to my current knowledge he doesn't use a laptop as his main performance piece. Sorry, there was no second point, I just wanted the cheap laughs of the ex-girlfriend joke. So here's my refined point about boring laptop shows in some kind of logical notation: IF you go to a performance AND the performance is BORING * (see note below) AND the performer primarily uses a laptop THEN BECAUSE a laptop is inanimate and cannot be blamed AND BECAUSE the performer is only expressing their art and cannot be blamed THE only conclusion left is that the music is boring. Elementary my dear Watson. * BORING. Thanks to all you boring people telling me about subjectivity I have refined the definition of BORING to be anything which you find boring, for you personally, not for anyone else. Also notice the difference between BORING and boring. BORING is subjective and boring is universal in that we all know how boring feels. SO The next time you go see your favourite act perform AND they are boring AND they are using a laptop, PLEASE DON'T BLAME THE LAPTOP, it's the MUSIC which is BORING * * (according to the above definition) Thank-you for allowing me to clarify. Tosh -- Twelve Hundred Group http://www.1200group.com/
(313) The truth about laptop shows...
Sure maybe it's flame bait, but at least it's honest flame bait. I've had this in me for about two months now. Do you ever wonder why a laptop show is boring? I know many of you do because I've seen the posts to prove it. I know why a laptop show is boring. It's because the f**king music the artist is playing is boring. That's right. It doesn't matter how intelligent you think you are or how intelligent you think the artist is, or what they are trying to achieve with their boringness, the fact is that their music sucks. It's true, otherwise nobody would be complaining that it's boring. It's like the story The Emperor's New Clothes. All it takes is one little girl to say it's boring and everyone knows the truth. Sure some people will try to delude themselves because their whole personal identity is wrapped up in thinking that because they like boring music they are somehow special. Ignore them. Why do I know this? Why do I speak with such god-given authority? Because two months ago I was outside in Cologne at a party on the beach (kinda) and The Modernist was playing. And do you know what? He was the most boring d*nm performer I have ever seen. He just stood there the entire time in front of his laptop doing something, maybe looking at porn (I know that's what *I* would be doing) for all I know. How boring can that be!?!?!?! But holy heaven/hell damn me if it wasn't the most energetic and amazing set of music I (and a thousand or so others) have heard in ages dance dance dance rock rock rock pumpin'. So if The Modernist just sits around and is boring and other laptop artists sit around and are boring, yet nobody complains about The Modernist then the logical conclusion is that all the people that I am too stupid to understand properly are boring. QED. Tosh -- Twelve Hundred Group http://www.1200group.com/

Final Scratch and audio feedback
Yes it's true that Final Scratch prevents audio feedback, and thus prevents that fuzzy bass build-up from happening, but as with all clouds there is a silver lining. When you go to play at the club and the other DJs are all using normal vinyl then they have a limit to how loud they can play. Plug in your Final Scratch setup and then, because you have no feedback to worry about, you can boost the volume by a good couple of dBs, making you sound that much better than everyone else (unless you suck normally) so in essence instead of having a fuzzy bass, you just have MORE clean bass. Problem solved. Tosh -- Twelve Hundred Group http://www.1200group.com/
[313] Hell biters...
Man a lot of you are bitter biters. Hell built a scene around a sound and many other people liked it. Liked it enough for it to become big enough for people to whine about. Cry-babies. Oh yeah, and to everyone who complains that this scene isn't about the music anymore but about drugs and money, well duh. This is PARTY music, and guess what happens at a party. [313] Does anyone compare to Hawtin?
Ok, there's always a lively discussion on the merits of Hawtin. Everyone has their opinion, and everyone has their tastes. But there are some things in the world which can't be argued. If you accept that pop music is not just about the music but also about the contextual packaging of the music, then you must accept that Madonna is one of the greatest pop artists, regardless if you enjoy her music or not, she demands (literally and figuratively) respect for what she is able to accomplish. Same thing with Hawtin, in a context. http://m-nus.com/ That was control II. The context is how/why you came to love electronic music, specifically techno. If you came to this music as someone inspired by the futuristic sounds, the ideas of progress and pushing forward embedded in the music, the liberating effect of controlling the entire production and performance experience, and because you had a great time at these new kinds of parties, then it is impossible to not respect Hawtin for what he's done. In that picture you see people obviously having a good time, but it's what you don't see that separates control II from every other yawn party out there: quadrophonic sound pyrotechnics finalscratch recycle (and who knows what else) the foot pedal MIDI controller lost track of what FX unit he's using these days custom track edits (playable via FS) what am I forgetting? All of it controlled by Hawtin. Not Rich dancing around like a muppet on stage while a host of behind-the-scenes helpers run the show, no entirely controlled by Rich. Maybe you don't like him as a person, maybe he spit on your grandfather, maybe he's white, maybe he's not American, maybe you like only people with hair, and/or maybe he slept with your mom, but you have to respect what he can accomplish within the context of your reason for liking techno music. I'm not entirely sure why I write this, probably because looking at that picture and knowing about the production which went into that party, it's pretty bloody inspiring to know that this techno thing will keep pushing the envelope, technologically and artistically. Who is more reprehensible?
Fatboy Slim, or Moby? Actually, I wouldn't mind getting a critical review of Cook from this list. It seems the main problem with Moby is that he has ripped off every black artist to have ever existed by sampling some gospel, but Cook (to my limited knowledge of his repetoire) has only ripped off Jim and whoever did that Rockefeller Skank sample, and I don't think either are black. So can someone here gimme a critical reason why Fatboy is horrid, aside from hating him for his success. Duh..... you said the answer right there
From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] So what are the general benefits to the public of copying? It sounds to me that the benefit of copying is the unimpeded sharing of information. Conceptually, this is a great idea. In practice I don't think this leaves us any way to support an artistic community. I want to emphacize this part: In practice I don't think this leaves us any way to support an artistic community. Do you know why? Because the artistic community has NOT presented us a way to support them within the new context in which we exist. And the only way to change entrenched communities is via confrontation, otherwise they will prefer to exist in entropy. We will pay, we have payed in the past and we will continue to pay but they (the artistic community) have to hold out a new hat for us to support them with. Tosh
Re: [313] Duh..... you said the answer right there
Phonopsia wrote: last week. I really care about whether or not underground music producers can continue to support themselves via their artistic efforts. What I'm seeing argued is that we should favor the tyranny of the majority over the tyranny of the minority, when *we are the minority*. I think that's backwards. We need to quit talking about major labels and think about our little world. This is a truly noble sentiment. However it has no basis in the capitalist world in which we operate. Nature is the most successful system ever created, evolution being an integral part of that. Capitalism mostly follows this design but a little quicker. Now don't start arguing about capitalism and evolution blah blah The point is the world has suddenly evolved. If your main predatory enemy has just evolved a new way to eat you, you can either sit there and whine and say hey that's not fair you can't do that or you can evolve a counter-response. That's what pushes evolution in nature and innovation in capitalist systems. As I said, it's a noble sentiment to want to protect the artists who make the music we love from the ravages of Napster (salt) but the reality is that the cat is not only out of the bag, but the cat now has a just sprouted a rocket pack on it's back, and whining at it to un-evolve isn't going to help. Re: German techno that fits 313?
It is not crap but I guess it has plateau-ed in recent times. I haven't been there though but I have seen many DJs. Patrick Lindsey is big in Australia HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA plateau-ed oh God (sic) I'm going to fall out of my chair. A night of German electronic music (aka techno) would kill a night of any other kind of regional music, including Detroit. Just look at the quality of output coming from lables like: Tresor Ladomat BPitch Control Shitkatapult Kompakt Perlon Force Inc Mille Plateaux Playhouse Kanzleramp Poker Flats DiscoB and on ... and on ... and on ... In fact I bet that a strong argument can be made that Detroit has lost the spotlight for innovative new music which now is sourced from Germany. Of course on a per capita basis Detroit of one million people still kicks Germany's 80 million people's ass. Oh and it should be noted that these labels are constantly releasing music and pushing the boudaries, not just relying on tired old formulas and the strength of their back catalogue. Tosh
Where it all began
This current race thread was started by Moby. Specifically it was started by people who were trying to justify their dislike of his music by noting that he used the work of black artists in his hit songs, much like many others have in the past. Picasso was heavily influenced by African masks, and cubism is heavily based on the ideas he saw in them. So is Picasso as evil and empty as Moby? If you don't like cubism or you don't like Moby, fine, but don't use the race of their artistic influences and muses to justify your dislike. Tosh

Haha, you are so lame!! (was future of DJ'ing)
I can't believe the things I read on this list. This list, which uses the works of Alvin Toffler in vain and frequently evokes the imagry of Blade Runner and music created in a present future dystopia, and then I read crap like this: Sounds horrible, going through the box is part of the artform. It would make it too calculated, you can't flick through your box, land on something else and think hmmm, now maybe I can play that instead. The smell of brand new vinyl out of the sleeve, the crackle of the record under the needle... there's something spiritual and special about vinyl that no other media can replicate. Pushing buttons has nothing to do with dj'ing as far as I am concerned. Imagine the joy of finally finding that record you've been after for several years, and then compare it to downloading that track Seeing a set being pieced together with records and the DJ making the set come together is part of the thrill and artform. Do you really want to watch some dude just press a few buttons on a computer, a pre-planned set, there could be no spontaneity, by default. It would be as boring as hell. Any fool could use the new system as it would be a relative cinch. I can't see too many house DJs adopting the new thing Like aren't some of the hip-hop turntablists establishing a way of notating scratches? I also sometimes wonder about about the reading ability of people on this list. I seem to recall saying the only aspect of DJ'ing that it changes is the carrying of vinyl and selecting of tracks to play. Do you people have that much difficulty with English? Is the Aussie dialect really that difficult that it doesn't penetrate the quoted sentence? I will break down the sentence: *the only aspect of DJ'ing that it changes* - this implies there is only one aspect, but there are actually two, now I see why you are all confused. *is the carrying of vinyl* - this is aspect one, the DJ doesn't have to carry around as much vinyl anymore. How much less is up to the individual. *and selecting of tracks to play* - this is the other aspect, the DJ no longer has to flip through a box of records. PAY ATTENTION! THE PERFORMER STILL MUST BUILD A SET, MUST STILL PLACE THE NEEDLE ON A RECORD ON A TECHNICS 1200, MUST STILL MATCH BEATS, MUST STILL CREATE A MOMENTARY EVENT, MUST STILL LOOK FOR HO'S, MUST STILL TRY NOT TO KNOCK THE NEEDLE WHEN BLOWING COKE, MUST STILL DECIDE IF RECORD 'B' IS SUITABLE TO PLAY AFTER RECORD 'A', ETC ETC ET-FU**ING-CETERA. So with that out of the way and because I am bored and incredulous I will respond to each of these in order. Sounds horrible, going through the box is part of the artform. It would make it too calculated, you can't flick through your box, land on something else and think hmmm, now maybe I can play that instead. -- How the hell is looking through a box for something you can't find and maybe left at home part of any artform?!? And is this any different than the DJ looking through the porn folder on their computer and finding some track and thinking oh yeah that's where I downloaded that stupid thing, my mouse must have slipped while I was typing with one hand, lemme play this now because I am so spontaneous and un-calculated. The smell of brand new vinyl out of the sleeve, the crackle of the record under the needle... there's something spiritual and special about vinyl that no other media can replicate. -- Oh my GodIf this is so important to you and there is a big enough market then I'm sure each unit will come with an ebony rod and a piece of rabbit fur so you can make all the static electricy you can manage, or just buy a nitrous balloon (empty it how you like, I don't care) reinflate the balloon, rub it on your head and then touch the leads on your equuipment, you'll get all the crackles your heart desires. Similarly if you really want crackles I'm sure someone will build you Kai's PowerCrackles for SoundForge. Pushing buttons has nothing to do with dj'ing as far as I am concerned. Imagine the joy of finally finding that record you've been after for several years, and then compare it to downloading that track -- Imagine the joys of actually learning how to play the bass, and then play the piano, and then play the drums, and then putting it all together to make a song, not just press the Drums button and having instant rhythm. AND ANYWAY WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT PUSHING BUTTONS?!?!?! This is not some button pushing technology, like all positive technologies it's a liberating technology, it liberates people from carrying lots of weight and protects them from possible paper cuts on sharp sleeves. Seeing a set being pieced together with records and the DJ making the set come together is part of the thrill and artform. -- I agree, but I don't recall saying that Final Scratch connects to the Internet, downloads Paul Oakenfold set 01-01-01 and proceeds to play it allowing the DJ to wander off to the VIP room and get some oral sex treatment. Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?
Anyone at MIDEM and see the release of Final Scratch? You know how I've been going on about the future of DJ'ing? Well Hawtin and Acquaviva along with N2IT out of The Netherlands did their press release of Final Scratch yesterday. It's not the first time they've used the system, it was used during their Peel show a few months ago, and John has been using it at almost every gig for the last few months. Essentially the only aspect of DJ'ing that it changes is the carrying of vinyl and selecting of tracks to play. Now instead of carrying boxes of vinyl you need only a suitable powerful laptop, and instead of flipping through your record box you just double-click a track and it's ready to go. That is the only aspect of DJ'ing as we all currently know that changes. So now what? Tosh
Theorem moving to Berlin
I've heard that Dale Lawrence has moved to Berlin, does anyone know if that's true? If it is true then that's crazy because EVERYONE is in Berlin these days and Dale would certainly be in good company and add something interesting to the mix. Tosh
I saw the future...
I saw it on Saturday. Vinyl is no longer needed. The DJ played, nobody who watched or listened noticed anything new, all 1000+ people had a great time. Stunning. I had many drinks to reconcile myself with this new reality. Tosh
elypsia?
whatever happened to them? They releasing anything good? Tosh
mispressed Barada CD
hmmmeveryone's mispressing stories seem to center on vinyl, but I have a copy of the Barada album Strategies for Deeper Design which is some rock'n'roll stuff of bad quality, and it's not just a matter of the wrong CD put in the wrong case, the CD even has the Barada inking on it. This CD was released through Virgin so I assume it's one of their acts on the CD. Tosh
take me seriously
Hey if I make a humourous remark of dubious nature about uh. Rich Hawtin, does that mean that people will take him less seriously? How about some self-depreciating humour at my own expense? When did some good-natured ribbing, especially in the context of witty sarcasm, become something that diminshed someone? Tosh

What's up with RS?
I haven't heard much noise from the RS camp in a while. Am I listening in the wrong places? Whatever happened to RS after the Sony deal? Tosh
Re: expo 2000 remixes
Dunno about the remixes but I went to Expo 2000 yesterday. Took an ICE train there, is it possible to get on a train in Germany and NOT be humming Trans Europe Express to yourself? As for the Expo, it was pretty amazing, somethings more amazing than others. The Swiss and Norwegians were very clever, and the Germans were just incredible (and so they should have been) Uh yeah 313 techno.uh... Tosh
All good contemporary German techno comes from...
Basic Channel brought about the renaissance in German techno that has occured. Tosh
Re: [313] is rolando too good for ben sims because of D records?
ack! Anybody bought some deep, stringy, soulful detroit techno lately? recommendations? No I don't think so, unless they were buying records from a few years back. All kidding aside, heh heh heh A Jaguar question: A few years back there was a party in Detroit thrown by Dez and the DETOR boys, it had Murat closing out the night and was in some warehouse right in the city, maybe near Woodward? Anyway, the last track Murat played as the warehouse doors opened up to reveal the Detroit skyline and the day was a stringy UR track that sounded a lot like Jaguar. Has Jaguar been around this long, or at least the template sound for Jaguar? Is this a sort of signature sound that has been passed down since Strings of Life, kinda like the Basic Channel 'whooshiness'. Tosh
Hey since we're off topic on CD software...
I'm looking to rip a mix CD into one file instead of the 20+ it comes as. I tried ripping then concatenating the files together but there's sometimes a slight overlap which makes my one big long file hiccup. Maybe I'm just using bad ripping software? Sugestions? Thanks! Tosh
Re: [313] digweed
Dunno about digweed but a Sasha CD of him in Ibiza found its way into the office and it was pretty good. Nice driving tracks, not too insipid, and to be honest, if I was in Ibiza I'm not too sure I'd really want to be beaten over the head with hard bangin' techno all night, and I'm sure he's playing Jaguar so there. Tosh
Re: [313] Mo' Moby
Name the famous 313 alumni who toured with Moby AND The Prodigy. Personally I'd rather listen to Moby than Kid Rock. Tosh
What's wrong with different?
Here's the famous quote: Diana Potts [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: insticts that men will never understand I'm glad Diana has instincts that men will never understand, I'm even more thankful that my mom had these same instincts. I don't understand why she (Diana) had to feel she needed to apologize for her observation, which is a pretty easy one to see, men not only don't look like women, but different things go on inside us too. duh. really!??! I don't see how it would be so hard for people to accept that we're not all the same. What I want to know in this age of politically-correct hyper-sensitivity is: what is wrong with being different? Tosh
Napster and racism
I love NAPSTER!!! I just had a really strange craving for Barry Manilow's Copacabana, so I downloaded Napster and there it is!!! Damn, I wonder what kind of cravings I'll get when I'm pregnant. I'm racist, guess what; so are you. If you're not racist then you're a liar. Everyone has some racial prejudices in them, but most intelligent people are able to identify these and not let insignificant feelings cloud their judgements about another human being. It should be noted that Europeans and North American's use different brands of racism, steeped in different contexts and refined in unique experiences. We both look at eachother and see racism, and it's true, but smart people can overcome this, so smarten up you fuckwits. Tosh
DJ Hell or Jeff Mills?
Re: Bambaataa or Hell, I don't know I've never seen Afrika, but I saw Hell *and* Mills who made a surprise apprearance at WMF in Berlin on Sunday. It's a gay night and it was really interesting seeing Mills play to a crowd that I have never seen him play to before. Hell is one of the top DJ's in the world, plays great music, great programming, and is just a great person in general so I'd go see him if it was my choice. Oh did I mention the Kompakt party the night before Hell and Mills? Yeah pretty much everyone played live. Tosh
