RE: [313] Techno for funerals

2001-10-20 Thread paul . matheson

Many years ago I went to the funeral of a friend who died at the age of 18.
They played 'Song to the Siren' by This Mortal Coil in the church. It was
astonishing, just extraordinary. A few weeks ago, I went to a wedding in
Ireland and it accompanied the bride into the chapel. And it worked.

When my mum died I asked them to play 'Fly me to the Moon' by Sinatra. Smiles
with tears all round, which is what funerals have to be about.

Me, I'd have 'Search Your Feelings' (like a ton of others on the list)

the world funeral wouldn't be used. It's like the
term wedding...it leads to heartburn and uncomfortable
shoes. It would be done Jim Henson style: complete
celebration of life.

The house tune It's a lovely day, and the sun is

Aretha and of course Forever in Blue Jeans by my

traditional Jewish celebration tunes. Long Island Iced

There would be a(n optional) bowling game

sorry..i got carried away.

I know I'm going to sound like such  pretentious wank, but here's a quote Mr

Didn't see the original article, but it comes along with a not-unfamiliar
theme.

There hasn't been a community in the club scene in SF since 1994, maybe
before.  Not in the sense that Paul Kantner was talking about.  From
probably 1990 to 1993 it was very real indeed.  There were things that
happened on dance floors in the SF scene that simply are beyond my
ability to explain, and I'm not talking about weird behavior or
outlandish costumes (which there were plenty of), but instead some kind
of deeper communication at both the musical and mental level.

We don't really talk about this any more, and even at the time attempts
to do so usually ended up sounded like touchy-feely babble, but something
really interesting was going on then.

The Grateful Dead scene had this at one time as well, but it also gradually
faded away as the novelty wore off, the audience dramatically expanded,
and the usual bunch of money-grubbing emerged even within the core of
the scene.  But that's a story for a different time and place.  In any
event, Kantner is right that there were differences between the 1960s and
1990s.  The drawback was not that people have missed one or the other,
but that they might have believed the hype about either and not understood
that the hype was only a layer over something far more different and
powerful.  A lot of people from the 1960s made that mistake about the
1990s, and the reverse is also true.

Fred

Do you have any evidence of this? Can you support this claim? Are you Iggy
Pop? The only influence Dub and Reggae may have had on punk is the message
they tried to get across. Ska was directly influenced by the rhythms and
sounds of Dub and Reggae as is apparent in the music, however Ska-punk cross
pollination really didn't happen until about '88 when Operation Ivy hit the
scene. Unless you consider The Specials and The English Beat 'punk', I'd
really like to know where you got this idea.

From The Detroit Free Press:

Several of Detroit's pioneering techno musicians met with Craig in April
at the office of Derrick May, the Detroit DJ scheduled to play the festival's
closing set. They included May, Stacey Pullen and Kevin Saunderson, who
asked Craig to include more Detroit artists on the bill.

'We let him know that we are one, and he has our support, but we just
want Detroit to be recognized at the festival, said May. Everybody's
coming here to be down with the source -- not the people who imitate the
source.'

///

Not to say I told you so, but as I recall when I was commenting on this list
about the lineup a few weeks ago, saying I didn't feel it was extremely
representative of Detroit talent, I feel I was getting hated on a little. Matter
of fact, noone really wanted to touch that topic that much at all, which is
one that I felt was certainly worth discussing on a 313 list. It's almost as if
people didn't want to dare question the holy DEMF and Carl Craig. But
now here it is, from the mouth of the prodigal son of techno himself, Mr.
Derrick May. And it seems that Carl Craig is on the out and out with this
festival anyway. What do y'all think now?
