What the
*I thought Kenny Larkin was the only comedian in techno however this is hilarious đ* *Jeff Mills and the Zanza 21* project is a new forthcoming creation thatâs been self-constructing for quite some time. Not out in the open and easy to see, but itâs been evolving more in recent months through the imprint âMillsartâ album releases and as an accumulation of ideas that are influences of Millsâ affection for Jazz Music as well as his constant appetite to creatively explore. The idea behind Zanza 21 is based on an old theory that âMusic is most useful at the point when it touches the soul of the listener, until then, its just soundâ. So, the main layer in the foundation starts there. To begin, this is music in which one can live with. Itâs âeverydayâ music. The more you listen, the more you connect to it. Itâs music for anytime, anywhere and for any reason. A large part of this connection is based on comfort and how easy it is to understand so for this, the music had to have a certain level of clarity and organization. Second, playing instruments can have âhuman connectionâ qualities that are often misunderstood and overlooked, so the basis of Zanza 21 was to create music in a soloist mindset to demonstrate intent, not as a matter of coincidence. These are melodies and rhythms from the mind of the composer, not the machine. And third and most importantly, this music was created with the design in mind that it should connect to those who love music unconditionally. In these first releases, all acoustic and electronic instruments are programmed and played by Jeff Mills, but an aspect of this project is that Zanza 21 is actually the initial vision for the creation of a live performance band. As this project evolves, so will the step process to materialize such an effort to its full potential. Starting with this first debut 12â EP release of âWhen The Time Is Rightâ b/w âSomething Like Thatâ, please consider there is already a large body of existing compositions waiting to be dispensed. A Jeff Mills and The Zanza album is scheduled for early 2022 entitled âWhen Stars Alignâ. Thus, making the revised artist title âJeff Mills and The Zanza 22â. https://www.axisrecords.com/product/jeff-mills-and-the-zanza-21-when-the-time-is-right/
Long shot
Iâm trying to ID a 12â from around 2000. I think it was Swedish / Scandinavian. It was called âFootprintsâ or similar and may have had a sketch of a footprint on the label. It had a upbeat minimal synthetic sound not a million miles from Aril Brikha but perhaps a little warmer. Thanks!
Summer techno
Well itâs winter here in Oz but since I watched âThe Man from Moâ Waxâ I been exploring a few âExcursionsâ releases I missed at the time, especially Midnight Funk âFirescratchâ đ

I gotta say those âdeconstructedâ articles kind of depress me but I guess you gotta keep the content up somehow. I spent years obsessing over MKâs hi hats and that was much more fun than a 15 minute tutorial đ Donât get me started on their logo t-shirts đ Is this all we got left?

CC / MVO
"It is not every day that you see a new Carl Craig/Moritz Von Oswald collab on Planet e!" After listening to the clips I'd say thank goodness for that. CC's version is flat-out terrible. It sounds like 2 unrelated records playing at the same time. Possibly the worst jazz - techno pileup since Jeff Mills 'Spiral Deluxe'. Moritz's version is drab and joyless and made me feel like I was being force-fed cold porridge.

Perspective
Sometimes articles written by others can help our understanding of the stories behind musical activities. But I honestly think the best way to understand the ideas of the musicians is to just listen to the music. All the academia in the world won't give you anything better than the amazing feelings you get from your favourite music. Music is beyond words anyway đ

Peeps Letâs stay cool. There are things I could say about my personal situation and the issues around D. May but to be honest I really donât think itâs my place. Of course these are highly emotional subjects and itâs too easy to fire off angry or sarcastic comments. Anything this serious needs to be dealt with in the right way, which I hope it will. Philski

Not literally! I'm no longer using the name Microworld and have just started a new label called Cachet Recordings. The Audiogenic EP is my first release. Jazz 'n' techno
Hey Matt & others Others have tried and failed to bring 'jazz' and 'techno' together before but there have been some noteable successes. Innerzone Orchestra 'Programmed' Kirk Degiorgio 'Check One' mix CD and 'Amalia's Mode' from 'Planetary Folklore' Kenny Larkin 'My Reflection' from 'The Narcissist' (the drums oh my) Ian O'Brien 'Desert Scores' Various Artists 'Elements of and Experiments with Sound' (insane creativity and asymmetrical arrangements) Theo Parrish 'Love is War for Miles' from 'First Floor' Don't worry too much about tasteful ;-) Philski

(313) Mayday
I wasn't going to buy into this, but I couldn't help myself. First, as a fellow pedant, I appreciate the comment about infer and imply. Nice work! Much as I love Derrick's early work ('Strings' never gets old) I'm not one of those who are supposedly crazed with anticipation over a few offhand comments about new material. The last release was an old track on the Japan-only release 'Beyond the Dance 4' which didn't exactly set the techno world alight. I checked DM's FB page for the first time recently and was dissapointed to see few new, interesting, creative or original comments or insights (maybe it isn't the place) but several indulgent videos featuring cigar-smoking and bland generalisations about how others aren't up to it. I have to say there are many others making great music these days who are generous and communicative with their ideas and much more inspiring. I'm just dissapointed. p
(313) Defining Detroit
This article kind of depressed me, as it's mostly about the past. Sure there are a few good new tracks on the Still Music comp, but it's patchy at best and not any kind of real development of the Detroit sound. This article won't change anything. Did DEMF / Movement make any difference to how actual house or techno are perceived or enjoyed by mainstream audiences? I doubt it. Plus it's now about 25 years since techno emerged - what makes anyone think that peeps will suddenly 'get' it? Are EDM kids (I guess they're kids) into music from that era? As a teen I sure wasn't much interested in music from the mid-'50s. It's great that the artists mentioned are still playing out and making the kind of great music they always have, but that would have happened regardless of the mainstream anyway. Just my 02 - this list is pretty quiet these days... p

Re: (313) New Transmat Comp.
Yeah I got a copy this week. It's a nice package with classic Japanese styling. It looks like it might contain upmarket cosmetics. My copy doesn't seem to say anything about 'War of the Worlds' being mastered from vinyl, thought it's a slightly different version to the one that appears on 'Detroit 313' et al. Anyhoo the tracks are mostly familiar. Many seem to be inspired by 'Groove La Chord' which was fine once or twice but not indefinitely. There are a few nice, if a little generic, tracks toward the end of the second CD. I guess Derrick can now let Djinxx go back to his happy monastic life in the Malaysian jungle.
(313) Blatant self-promotion

(313) name the preset
funsters there is a synthesiser sound i suspect is a factory preset and would very much like to know what it is. in very general terms i would say it's somewhere between an organ and a string / pad sound. it seems to have the timbre of an organ and the 'floatiness' of strings. it's quite delicate and has a flutey / vocal / choir quality too. you can hear it in r-tyme's 'illusion', kenny larkin's 'my reflection' as well as actress's 'marble plexus'. any ideas? p

(313) new transmat
it's really no big deal. i was bemused more than anything. i got in touch with transmat a few days ago and it seems they didn't know how to contact me. fair enough - i've moved cities and changed my email address. yes there is a lot of lazy journalism and yes certain claims might not always be 100% accurate. whatever. i'm happy doing what i do. and yes getting paid is tough. i never saw a cent from danny tenaglia or roger sanchez including 'signals' on their mix cds, or sven vath using 'disco version' (styrax) on his. i'm a more assertive these days, but some things are impossible to resolve or negotiate via email. dj scruples? don't make me laugh.

howdy peeps i was lucky to have on of my tracks included on the newish renaissance mix CD by m.a.n.d.y. which i am listening to now. i have been well out of the loop for quite a while but it seems there are quite a lot of cool tracks, especially on the more downtempo CD1, but plenty of interesting clubbier stuff too. it's nice to hear some original stuff that sounds fresh, funky and feelgood that isn't cheesetastic or brain-dead. philski
(313) sample stuff
howdy funsters what do peeps know about the current sample clearing situation? ie a track on a 313 type indie label that gets the usual kind of 313 exposure & sells a few thousand copies - do you think most people clear the samples they've used? it's hard to say how recogniseable the sample i've used is - i haven't altered or obscured it in any way so if you know the original track you'll spot it, though it's also a fairly generic sounding backing vocal from a '80s hip hop / pop artist. i really can't afford to pay the sample clearance upfront. hmm, thanks! philski

(313) (stuff)
yo wassup. not a lot of news from here. new traxx going well i think. should try and get some DJ gigs happening soon, been practising a bit more lately to make a mix CD. got a copy of that art / new religion comp. so far it hasn't thrilled me hugely. some of it is pleasant but eh i dunno. nice packaging tho :-P got an awesome CD by konono no. 1 an african group from the congo / angola area. it's really deep and full-on. lots of it is intentionally distorted in a really nice warm, fuzz, analog way. saw 'the proposition' and thought it was pretty dreary. can't really see what all the fuss is about. what's your phone # i thought i'd written it down but can't find it p

i thought i knew what techno was but apparently it's just an effect, or mozart, or as previously alledged just a looped fragment from a jazz record. cripes was i wrong!
(313) The more things change
Funsters Iâm trying to get an understanding of techno in â05 and if itâs any different from how itâs always been, i.e. relatively marginal. It seems that the scene is quite healthy, with lots of good new music, but it also seems that itâs never going to grow beyond itâs current niche 'market', if you like. I know that once people hear proper techno & house, they dig it, but Iâm curious to know how & where itâs being heard & enjoyed and if itâs audience has changed at all in the last 20 years. Do you think that there is a greater awareness and appreciation of 313 techno over the past 5 or 6 years, i.e. post-DEMF / Movement? If youâre a label or shop owner - are you selling more records & CDs? If youâre a radio or club DJ - do you play much techno and what kind of response or feedback to you get? I have noticed that there are quite a lot of new releases with relatively slow tempos, under 125 BPM or thereabouts. Does this make a difference to where and when you play these records, given the fact that theyâre clearly not âpeak timeâ records for most club dancefloors? Innerested to hear what peeps have found. Thanx. Sorry for the lousy formatting. philski
(313) er no
doot is not the same as doop UK 313ers may have not fully understood teabagging (not that it's popular down here. i only know about it from john waters 'pecker') philski
(313) jazz dance / d. may
funsters if you can find a copy, check out terrence parker's seven grand housing authority 'soul beats' 12" on simply soul http://www.discogs.com/release/43952 B2 'grand jazz' is incredibly funky and hasn't dated one millisecond. it is much more original and creative than typical swing jazz house. the rest of the 12" is pretty good too. cajmere's 'underground goodies' remix of dajae's 'you got me up' pretty much started the trend and appears to have been the blueprint for 'doop'. sorry to rekindle painful memories. a few years ago there was a nice double page article in a UK mag (muzik?) in which derrick may talked about his all time & then current favourite records. i think it was divided up into colored columns for each different style ie current club, home listening etc. if anyone has a copy of this and is willing to scan it & send it to me that would be mucho appreciated. thanx a bunch. philski
Re: (313) Who do you like that is under 25?
not crazy 'bout his music but i heard matthew dear on the radio tonight and he sure has a nice voice. i think he's under 25? found a CD single of carl craig's remix of ultramarine's 'hooter' today ($2) apparently this is a classic remix. hmmm... read an interview with some chicago promoters in xlr8r quote: 'it does seem like more electronic music enthusiasts - be it house, IDM, or even the new dance rock kids - are discovering techno / house tracks. People are finding out that these Kompakt, Peron, Playhouse, Spectral, and UR tracks are beautiful - I love that!' damn straight. i love that too. p-ski
(313) still music comp
what do peeps think about the still music comp? i can't tell much from the online clips i've heard. the best of *that kind of stuff* ('scuse the generalisations) can be original, hella funky & deep, but unfortunately a lot of it sounds weak & cliched. the beatdown comp was a bit like that, some really cool stuff, some not so cool. philski still loving the delsin comp
