(313) AH Xone 32 (was richie hawtin in Wired)

2003-11-20 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I'm not convinced - although what do I know, not being a dj?

No readily accessible trims means you can't really use volume as an effect
as much as you might.

Also, as for myself, when I do play, I tend to play quite a bit of old
records - I mean over ten years old - which are often 'quiet' pressings for
any number of reasons.

Reaching back to the gains to turn a channel up and then hurriedly going
back there to turn it down again for the next record will get irritating,
and knowing me, I'll probably forget sometimes ...

All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're
cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends, filter
etc. all need to be closer to hand while in the mix. Before I got a Xone 32
I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a
week or so of
getting used to it I've never given it another thought. It's just a great
sounding well built piece of kit.

Why are the gains on the back tho

I'll back that one up- the A+H mixers are the only DJ mixers I've ever
used where you can actually BOOST frequencies with the EQ and it
doesn't sound harsh- they have anew mixer out new month with a big
launch party at Cargo in London- I'll let you all know what its like
  once I've seen it.

  cheers

The EQ is 4 way too, and from my own experience, allows much

The facilities (ranging from Aux Send/Return, Filters etc)
are also top
  notch.
In short- I have never used anything better.

interesting about his modified allen and heath mixer

sorry if this has been posted before...

  matt :)

  a couple of comments:

  1. i didn't think itunes had dance music from independent labels

  2. people talk about how hawtin (and others) simply play the same set
over and over again, or at least variations of that set. it isn't
  hard to
understand why this dynamic occurs given his travel
itinerary. doesn't
mean it is RIGHT...but it IS understandable.

  3. i'm not familiar with the allen and heath mixer. what
does he gain
from modifying IT as opposed to a standard say, GEMINI? (*ducks*)

  peace

plus the curve on the volume fader is very sharp once you get past the

but this mixer is not even close to that. i'm used to a 20 db curve
and this was sharper then that, maybe you can change it but i did not
see a switch.

plus the line/phono switch is in the back and is a botton not a

i tend to play a lot of electro and techno and i could see the mixer

All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're
cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends,
filter

Xone 32
I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a
 week or so of
getting used to it I've never given it another thought. It's just a
great
sounding well built piece of kit.

you get used to anything you do repeditivily. i have this guitar that
has a divit in the 3 fret on the b string. makes all my d cords sharp
in the octive. but i have trained myself to mute the octive.

but when you jump on my guitar and do not know that you will try to
tune it to no end with no luck!

and with those trims on the back in a dark club with no switch and a
crappy volume fader curve it makes it hard to do what you do and with
the deck already stacked against you one more joker in there well
you get my point.

2003-11-20 Thread yussel
i'm under the impression that hawtin really helped bring AH into the DJ
mixer world after being a top-shelf desk mixer company for so long. for
epok- he had AH make this custom dj/studio mixer fusion that he used to
plug in 10 pieces of gear (909,303,808,101, efx...)
