Martin PS: Ramon - I am root, you must obey! I also work in a cublicle based job. Im a unix geek, but I do listen to techno at work sometimes I get comments like turn it off or turn it down .. other times when I'm listening to more minimal stuff I get comments like if you wanted modem chatter I couldve recorded myself dialing up to aol at night and sold it to you for cheaper than what you paid for that cd. *lol*. Anyway its a pretty intresting place and I try to use headphones to help me focus on my work and sometimes I do have to answer the phone so I have the headphones in cue mode (one on one off). Today I listened to Sasha's Involver and got no complaints .. hmm intresting. :) Great topic btw! Regards, Ramon

Skinny Puppy, Last Rights. Track 3, Knowhwere? placed on perpetual loop. Clears things out usually before even one repeat. :) Heh, the Danielle Dax tracks actually sounds intriguing. I may have to track them down and give a listen. john. Most at LD Towers don't share my love of things like TG/Whitehouse, but what CD do you use to clear the room? Similar situation but different side of this planet (Oulu, Finland) :) Cubicle job but we have to listen to the music with earphones. My co-workers don't seem too phased by my techno listening habits - its when I take off my headphones to talk to people and Whitehouse or Merzbow is blaring out that I get a few raised eyebrows :)) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 15 June 2004 13:25 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) you listen to techno? ...just started working with my current employer about a month ago. desk job, cubicle, plenty o' coffee. anyway, there's a fairly relaxed policy towards music in cubicles. as a result, i spend most of my 8hrs. with great house and techno pumpin' out of my little PC speakers. naturally, this being suburban america, i am the only commuter listening to the music of this list for about 60 miles in all directions. i get my fair share of raised eyebrows and cheeky comments from co-workers that are not familiar with my weird bass music. i'm all alone in a sea of alarmist talk radio, and toby keith anthems. i'm just curious if any other list-members are immersed in a similar environment. cheers, lrh

Beep beep - I'm listening to computer music was something I heard quite commonly when I was in army abt. ten years ago. A bit odd, since nowadays the harthouse-tape I was listening would be classified as mainstream trance. Also, my classmates prohibited me to bring any music to parties in high school, which was nice. But this has drastically changed since - nowadays nobody comments even on plain noise. I want those cheeky comments too!

One time I pulled into a gas station in Utah to fill up my tank, with some Herbert or Mr Oizo track going loud enough to get a good back massage, and the attendant mechanic came running out of the garage because he thought something was wrong with my car. - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno

I stick to headphones at work, unless I'm staying late or hardly anyone's around. I sit in an open area and the music helps shut off the rest of the world so I can focus on computer schtuff. a couple times people ask what I'm listening to, but if I tell them or share a listen, I usually get the oh, OK followed by an odd look that says you're strange. This morning's selection is something by the Orb, 'cos I gotta chill. lisa - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 8:24 am Subject: (313) you listen to techno? ...just started working with my current employer about a month ago. desk job, cubicle, plenty o' coffee. anyway, there's a fairly relaxed policy towards music in cubicles. as a result, i spend most of my 8hrs. with great house and techno pumpin' out of my little PC speakers. naturally, this being suburban america, i am the only commuter listening to the music of this list for about 60 miles in all directions. i get my fair share of raised eyebrows and cheeky comments from co-workers that are not familiar with my weird bass music. i'm all alone in a sea of alarmist talk radio, and toby keith anthems. i'm just curious if any other list-members are immersed in a similar environment. cheers, lrh

I sit in an open plan office and when im not on the phone I listen via headphones but do get derogitory statements about cut paste music from those sitting around me. I do however have nice connection speed from work for downloading mixes etc ;-) Cheers BT --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I stick to headphones at work, unless I'm staying late or hardly anyone's around. Re: (313) you listen to techno?
well, part of my last job was working in a mailroom and I got to play practically anything I wanted. I did't so much get strange looks from playing techno/house/etc. - more like it was playing some techno stuff followed by blues, followed by some rock band, followed by something like funk or world music, and then a bit of jazz. It was if nobody had ever listened to more than one genre of music. People were genuinely surprised by the diversity of music I was playing. And if anyone had the courage to talk to me about electronica (it was all the rage back then) they had to suffer while I explained the history in proper terms like house, techno, drum bass, etc. ;D MEK
Re: (313) you listen to techno?
Out here in metro Phoenix, it seems that NO ONE knows what techno is. I listen to it all day in the office (along with some good deep house mixes) and listen to ghettotech and electro in the car around town. One of my co-workers described it as sounding like little ants marching (I was listening to Rekall on my laptop speakers) and another described it as that music that's on all of the car commercials nowadays. I find that listening to techno is probably the one thing that keeps me grounded in Detroit.
