Tim -

4D's "Software Requirements" for v18.3 LTS dated Sept 2020 says
MacOS High Sierra (10.13) - MacOS Catalina (10.15)

4D's "Software Requirements" for v18.4 LTS dated Feb 2021 says
MacOS Mojave (10.14) - MacOS Big Sur (11)

Both say
Latest release of version is required, such as 10.14.6

I know this information MUST be available on the 4D site or the knowledge
base. But I can't find it anywhere. I did find one place that said 18.5 is
NOT compatible with High Sierra, but I can't figure out the highest version
that IS compatible. Can anyone help?

Good morning, Uist -

If you still need it, you can download a copy of 4D 2003 installer here (both
Windows and Mac).

Re: v12 and El Capitan ?

2019-10-02 Thread Janie Marlow via 4D_Tech
Thank you, Chip. That is very helpful to know.

I'm pretty sure that I remember others on this list who have mentioned that
they have used v12 on 10.11. I would really like to hear from some of them too -

Wonder, has anybody out there done any development with v12 on 10.11, and what
kinds of issues did you run into?

Thanks!

v12 and El Capitan ?

2019-09-24 Thread Janie Marlow via 4D_Tech
Occasionally I've read here that some of you have used 4D v12 on El Capitan (OS
10.11.6).

Software/hardware issues are tempting me to try that -- for a short period of
time at least --
or is this something you would warn me away from?

What kinds of issues can I expect to encounter?

Thank you -

storing text in BLOB is inadvisable for several reasons:

BLOBs are not ref-counted and memory inefficient. there are copied when passed
as a method argument, for example.
BLOB to text conversion is costly, especially when the storage encoding is not
UTF-8 (unicode to unicode conversion is quite efficient)
there is not inherent size advantage compared to text.
BLOB assumes that a byte is your atomic data unit, which is not true for Unicode
you are denied access to essential text commands such as position, match regex,
replace string, etc.

but if things are working well,
of course you don't need to convert them.

Log File does not correspond to data file after compacting

2018-01-04 Thread Janie Marlow via 4D_Tech

v2004, 10.6.8

Yesterday I compacted my databases' data file, something I had not
done since v6 or before. Afterwards, when I opened the database, I
was presented with a series of alerts:

* The correct Log file for this data file could not be found. Try to
find it. If you cannot find the Log File, make a full backup of the
data before creating a Log File.

* The Log File does not correspond to the data file.
* A Log File is necessary to use this database.

I experimented with renaming the data file, but I could not get past
the alerts, so I ended up going back to using the uncompacted file.

I've searched the docs, and I cannot find any special instructions
regarding compacting a data file when using a Log File.

It doesn't say anything about unclicking "Use Log File" before
compacting, but is that what I should do?

or should I backup immediately before compacting?

Thank you -
Janie

Re: Favorite tricks and keystrokes: Please take one and leave on

2017-05-30 Thread Janie Marlow via 4D_Tech
Another workaround might be to have both the method open and the
Explorer open, with the method selected in the Explorer and the
Explorer expanded to Preview?

- the split pane feature
Workaround = copy the code to a dummy method and have it open beside
the real method.
