Re: [57north-discuss] [57north-announce] Movement Themed Thursday: 6th November
hi, I will be at the space this evening - looking forward to the discussions :) This weeks Themed Thursday will be an evening looking at various things to cause or sense movement. We will have some motors, servos and steppers (at least one of each) and example control systems to have a play with (and hopefully people who understand them to have a chat with). On the sensing side we have accelerometers and some ideas around making potentiometers from conductive ink. There was talk a while ago of building a communication system that pulls on string for its physical layer. This talk might continue and perhaps even get as far as some action. Bring along anything you have to make or sense movement (anyone got a collection of solenoids? Some hydraulic or pneumatic rams? Does anybody know what they're doing with the mechanical side of things? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkQ2pXkYjRM), or movement related problems or hair brained schemes. I won't be around next Thursday (13th). Any volunteers to run something? The organising can be as simple as committing to being there and announcing a topic you're interested in (or as complicated as you like). Re: [57north-discuss] Themed Thursdays
Vogons commenting without post scripting with a poem is a violation against poem law enforcement notice 'Lesser life form communications legislation' form 1324A paragraph 4 subsection 94; to-wit: '...communications with lesser life forms (any life form that is not Vogon) will inherently require mandatory amendment and recitement of the vogon poem of the day - day here constitutes reference to VMT (Vogon Mean Time) taken from the Vogon meridian at Vreenwich' - please dont let it happen again. Also, as king of the fish, I do actually believe I am in a position to comment on the knotty question of standing on cyborg triops; by the mere fact that these are cyborg triops means that standing on them would make absolutely no difference to the living state, obviously they would have reinforced titanium outer skeletal forms with associated pneumatic and electrical systems, sensors and weaponised air born chemical deterants (commonly known as silent but deadly farts), king henry VIII suit of armour comes to mind, with of course the cod piece needed only for the southern dwellers. P.s. Where do we stand on cyborg Triops [1], ethically speaking? Seems more doable. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triops Your honour, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if you'll just lend me your ear for a brief moment longer, I shall clear up the against argument for the standing on cyborg Triops. The members of the Cyborg Triops genus are very concerned about the recent trend of honourary Vogons standing on them. They would like me, as their legal representative in this instance, to clarify that ethically speaking, to use the offensive side's own words, there is no reason for standing on a Cyborg Triops. This, naturally, leads to the conclusion that there is no location where it can be considered appropriate to stand on a cyborg triops - if, ethically speaking it's unacceptable to stand on a triops of any variety, then the location of standing is not going to change this fact. Are you seriously suggesting that we are the kind of civilisation that compartmentalises murder? Strong words, I know, but you're robbing another innocent lifeform of it's continued existance. To ask for an ethical position to kill these augmented creatures? I think the offensive speaker's priorities need to be adjusted! I lay to rest the against argument - that to stand on a Triops, cyborg or otherwise, is unacceptable ethically, regardless of location. Sincerely, Sir General Engineer Hibbington III esq, Legal Council for Triops (cyborg and other varieties). ... We should do a comedy debates night. -- Blog: http://beta.hibby.info Linkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/in/davehibberd Fingerprint: 5E4F 5451 93E8 969C 8A59 B80A 03A1 FB7A 1904 771B Twitter: @Hibbie Call: MM3ZRZ ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss
Re: [57north-discuss] Themed Thursdays
Really good ideas ! and really interested in the FPGA talk - can we firm up a date for this please, this thursday maybe ? If anyone is interested in knowing how to tweet automatically from a system please say; I can demo, and give pointers on use and abuse. Themed Thursdays have kind of fallen off; I'm keen to see if we can resurrect them. I've a couple of things that I'd be willing to run: - FPGA programming - there seems to be a couple of people interested in playing with FPGAs. I could run an evening where we go through the fundamental of designing for FPGAs and get flashing lights (and maybe something more adventurous) running on some dev boards (I think I can provide 2 cyclone II boards and a Spartan 6 (I'd have to have a look and see if I can find them - the cyclone II boards are pretty cheap if we need more) to play with. - Basic digital electronics - lets grab some resistors and transistors and build basic RTL gates and other things. I think the step from single transistor to logic is often fuzzy. Resistor transistor logic is pretty simple and we could easily wire up a variety of gates on a bread board and build something more complicated (I'd go for an adder (not awfully complicated but is useful) but am open to suggestions). We could look at some of the other options for building logic too. Things I'd be interested in/we've talked about in the past if anyone would run them (or be willing to do them with others): - Soldering - Soldering is something that is very easy to do wrong but regularly required. There are lots of tips and tricks that can make it easier. Let's set aside some time to exchange tips/tricks/pointers to where such can be found and make everybodies soldering better (world domination to follow shortly). - Pointing robot - We have a robot arm with a laser pointer and some plans to use it to find where things are kept in the space. There are quite a lot of things that need to be done to get it to do all of that: a database/list of what's in the space and where it is (or should be), a way to get from that to what we want the arm to do to point at something, control/sensing of the arm location, an interface to look up something for the arm to point at, power supply for the arm + control stuff, probably more stuff that I've forgotten about. I'd like to work on this as a group project. - 3D printer/mill - Ed donated most of the parts needed to make a 3D printer or CNC mill. Could we have an evening to have a look at what the plans are to build it? Is there any interest in any of the above actually happening? Would you like something else? Are you willing to run something? Robert -- Robert McWilliam r...@allmail.netwww.ormiret.com Disclaimer: Opinions cited by me are not necessarily my opinions.
