[AI] Abandoned to fate

2009-02-17 Thread Shadab Husain
LUCKNOW: Monu was found in Barabanki with not even a shred of clothing on his
body. The ten-year-old boy, who is mentally challenged, could only tell his
name when asked about his whereabouts. Police brought him to Lucknow and handed
over to childline. Similarly, another mentally challenged boy,
about eight-year-old, was standing on Jugauli railway crossing in Gomtinagar
when he was saved by a cycle mechanic and brought to the childline. However,
all government homes refused to admit the two boys as they were already
overcrowded.

Finally, after much effort, Monu was admitted in Nirvaan, a non-government
organisation and the other one, who cold not even tell about his name, at
another
NGO, Drishti Samaji Sansthan. As many as 28 mentally disabled
children
have been found abandoned in the city since April 2006, including three in one
month alone. While there are an estimated over one lakh mentally retarded
children, there are only two government shelter homes, for boys in Allahabad
and for girls in Bareilly, with a capacity of 50 each.

Regular shelter homes for normal children do not admit mentally retarded
children because they need 24 hours attention. "Such children even do not know
about toilet practices, hence we need one maid over five children and expert
hands who can train such children about basics of life and help them survive
on their own. As managing these children require adequate facilities,
tremendous skills, patience, sense of service and dedication, hence only few
NGOs
work in the area,'' said Abhishek Singh, a social activist.

Ironically, the city boasts of having eight universities, over 200 higher
educational institutes, over one thousand schools, now even an upcoming
university
for disabled, big malls and huge parks, but it does not have a shelter home for
mentally disabled destitute. The one for mentally challenged girls at city
station is for training and not a shelter. Some NGOs also run training centres
for mentally challenged but have limited capacity. However, in NGO sector
also only few are working with dedication.

While there are some facilities, though minuscule, for children, there is
absolutely nothing for mentally retarded destitute above 18 years of age. A
group
of IPS officers in the city work for these destitute. They take them to the
hospital for treatment and find them homes for
rehabilitation
. But there are many who cannot recall their whereabouts. "Such people are also
citizens of India. They do not want sympathies but shelter and care which
is their right in a welfare state,'' said Ajit Shukla, a
social worker.

Multi-disabled suffer even more

The condition of multi-disabled is worse. There are over 28,000 such children
in the state but not a single shelter home or training centre. The case of
Rinku, the five year old child, found abandoned in Charbagh railway station
last year is an eye opener. Blind,
partially deaf
and mentally challenged, he was forced to live on footpath for eight months on
the mercy of passers-by till a child rights activist found him and convinced
an NGO Ashok Punarvas Sansthan (APS) to keep the boy till a permanent shelter
was found. The APS kept the boy for four months but on February 3 appeared
before the court of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and said that they cannot
keep the child any longer. Facilities in the government blind school were also
not adequate for the boy. Now CWC has asked APS to surrender the boy to
government child home so that he can he handed over to Drishti Samajik Sansthan,
the organisation found to be fit for the purpose by CWC chairperson, Dr
Brigeetha VV. But APS has changed its stand and has not surrendered the boy so
far citing some reason or other. Sources said that CWC can seek police help for
non-compliance of the order.

greetings to all.

recently, amar, an accessindian wanted to merge 2 mp3 files into 1
large file and since most of us deals with audio books and other mp3
stuff's, i thought this could be helpful to other accessindians too,
so here is the trick to do that.

Just follow these steps :
1. Put all files on any folder ( for example, test1 in c drive.)
2. Move to source directory using cd command ( open command promt by
going to run and typing cmd.
then type c: to go to root drive.
then type cd test1 to change the current working directory to c:\test1.)

3. type copy /b *.mp3 c:\new.mp3
4. Enter and you will find newly concatenated .mp3 file on c drive
with filename new.mp3

The /b modifier
is the trick, with the asterisk playing a wild card to catch all
binary files in a directory. To choose individual files, list the
file names separated
by the + symbol.
Simply use the command copy /b file1.mp3 + file5.mp3 + file8.mp3
c:\new.mp3 for this for selecting from large dump of mp3.

please note, that the output file can't be separated to individual
mp3 from which it has been made.

feel free to play around with this command because your imaginations
is your boundaries and this doesn't changes anything in your
source/original files.

with warm regards,

ruchir.

[AI] A new query Was: Re: an alternative for blackboard?-regarding.

2009-02-17 Thread Amarjit Powar

Dear AccessIndians:
This is an off-topic question but cropped up in my mind because Vetri
mention about Tamil Nadu's government "distributing television sets to the
people and of course on paper". About a year or so, Canada's national
magazine, Maclean's, www.macleans.ca, had reported of only ten million
households having a television sets throughout India. Listers, could these
statistical figures be correct? Yes, I vividly remember reading that in
Maclean's and Maclean's reporting rivals that of TIME magazine of the US.
Could somebody comment on this please. I'm talking of ten million
television sets and not ten million computer sets. I, however, am very very
skeptical about India having only ten million households with a television
set out of a teaming almost 1.150 billionpeople.
On the other hand, a few years ago reports were that Calgary was the most
wired place to the web in the world.

There is certainly an alternative method provided that your school
cooperates. You can use PowerPoint slide shows as an alternative to the
writing on the blackboard. But the trouble is that the school needs to
have a multimedia projector which can project the computer screen on the
board and I am not sure of it's cost. Second, I do not expect Tamil Nadu
government to be sensitive to such issues since they are busy in
distributing television sets to the people and of course on paper. Another
alternative could be to get a wide screen LCD monitor which is visible to
the entire class and your laptop can be attached to that external display
there by slides can be shown to the students. In any case, we have long
way to go on that.

Re: [AI] Victor stream reader

2009-02-17 Thread Amarjit Powar

How much is it in Rupees?
Victor Reader Stream is Now AudibleReady
Portable MP3 Player Specifically Designed for the Blind and Visually
Impaired now Compatible with Audible.com

Longueuil(Canada), November 15, 2007

Victor Reader Stream, the pocket-sized portable MP3 player designed for
blind and low-vision people now has the capability to play the popular
Audible.com
books. In addition to the variety of audio formats (MP3, DAISY, and NISO
books and music) supported by Victor Reader Stream, the Audible format will
provide
a huge additional choice of content to the users. Audible is the leading
provider of spoken audio on the internet, providing over 140,000 hours of
digital

audio editions of books, newspapers and magazines.

The Stream has extensive navigation features for moving through audio books
and text files, including functions that allow you to move to the next
chapter,
section or page, or to set bookmarks. For Audible books, the user will be
able to navigate from one Audible heading to the next, move by increments of
one-, five-, or ten-minute time jumps, and move with an accelerated fast
forward feature that announces the amount of time lapsed. Blind and
low-vision
people who listen to talking books on a regular basis often prefer to speed
up the playback. For all audio book formats that Stream plays, including
Audible,
variable speed control with digital pitch correction allows the reader to
accurately listen at higher than normal playback speed.

The player is completely accessible by blind and low-vision users. All keys
and messages are provided through audio feedback. The player has a built-in
User Guide and a Key Describer mode to remind the user of keypad functions.
It comes with integrated text-to-speech voice, allowing it to play text-only
files and announce the track names of music files. It uses an SD memory card
to store books and music transferred from a computer.

"We are very happy to bring the advanced navigation features of Stream to
the Audible listener experience", says Gerry Chevalier, HumanWare Victor
Reader
Product Manager. "I know of no other Audible-ready player that offers
accessibility, variable speed playback, and advanced navigation, all in one
package."

"We are very much aware of the value and popularity of Audible books for
the blind and visually impaired", says Will Lopes, Vice President for
Business
Development at Audible. "We are pleased to work with HumanWare to bring the
benefits of the accessible Victor Reader Stream player to Audible
listeners".

Victor Reader Stream can be purchased online at
http://www.humanware.com/
(in USA). Current Victor Reader Stream users will need to upgrade their
player to software version 1.1 in order to play Audible books. The latest
version

1.1 software upgrade is also available online at
http://www.humanware.com/.

Dear Friend,

I have been using Victor Stream Reader for more than six months
& have found it to be quite useful.

I use the Victor Reader mainly for two purposes - recording
meetings & conference calls & for listening to audio books &
songs. Recording meetings & conference calls allows me to
concentrate fully on the meeting/ conference call & I can listen
to the recording later to prepare the minutes or follow-up
points. Since I have to spend nearly three hours daily in
travelling by bus to & from my workplace, the Victor Reader
allows time to pass quickly in listening to audio books & songs.

[AI] Vigorous exercise may help prevent vision loss!

2009-02-17 Thread Saravanan Ramadoss

Vigorous exercise may help prevent vision loss: study
New York (PTI): Vigorous exercise may help prevent vision loss, a pair of
studies have suggested. The studies tracked approximately 41,000 runners for
more than seven years, and found that running reduced the risk of both
cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

The research, conducted by the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory, is among the first to suggest that vigorous exercise
may help prevent vision loss and offers hope for people seeking to fend off
the onset of eye disease.

"In addition to obtaining regular eye exams, people can take a more active
role in preserving their vision," says Paul Williams, an epidemiologist at
Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division who conducted the research.

"The studies suggest that people can perhaps lessen their risk for these
diseases by taking part in a fitness regimen that includes vigorous
exercise."

A cataract, which is a cloudy opacity of the eye lens, is the leading cause
of blindness. More than one-half of people in the US over the age of 65
suffer from some form of cataracts. Age-related macular degeneration, which
damages the retina, is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in
older white Americans, affecting 28 per cent of people aged 75 and older.

Subject: [AI] Seeking guidance

Respected list members,

Greetings from my end!

I have always been in touch with this great family group and learnt so
many things through this wonderful mailing group. Today I am looking for
your valuable guidance for my wife who had done her masters in Sitar
(Instrumental) from Kheragarh university chattisgarh and now planning to
enroll herself for MPhill in the same. She had performed in Rome and
Austria when she was in school at Jeewan Jyoti (varanasi). Would
appreciate if some one on the list who is already in this field could
reply my following queries:

1. Which is the best university to do MPhill in Sitar?
Please consider that we are residing in Delhi .
2. Is the study material available online?
3. Are the regular classes essential?

Waiting for your valuable suggestions.

Thanks and regards,
Satguru

No. Even in English teaching I don't think it is very important. iIf so, We

I do not think the blackboard is very important. while writing
calculations, it may be important. but when studying the subjects like the
social sciences it is hardly of any use. of course it has become an
alternative to those teachers who just dictate the answers to the questions
which are supposed to come in the examinations. but for a healthy learning,
blackboard is only useful when the students are not able to get the
spelling of some words or during maths calculations and formullae etc.

Re: [AI] Victor stream reader

2009-02-17 Thread Sameer Latey

Dear Friend,

I have been using Victor Stream Reader for more than six months
& have found it to be quite useful.

I use the Victor Reader mainly for two purposes - recording
meetings & conference calls & for listening to audio books &
songs. Recording meetings & conference calls allows me to
concentrate fully on the meeting/ conference call & I can listen
to the recording later to prepare the minutes or follow-up
points. Since I have to spend nearly three hours daily in
travelling by bus to & from my workplace, the Victor Reader
allows time to pass quickly in listening to audio books & songs.
