Apologies for the commercial nature of this post, but it is something of
interest to many people on the list...

We at Design Science are happy to announce the release of our newest
product, MathDaisy. Many educational institutions now require teachers,
instructors, and professors to make classroom materials accessible to
students with disabilities. MathDaisy makes it possible to save
Microsoft Word documents containing equations as a DAISY book that can
be read by students on a personal computer or a dedicated eBook reader.

The press release has been published on our website at
http://www.dessci.com/en/company/press/releases/090413.htm

Our hope is that MathDaisy together with Word's Save as DAISY makes it
easy
enough to publish DAISY books with math in them that anyone can, and
more

importantly, will create accessible material to give to their students,
colleagues, etc.

2009-04-19 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Information from these mashups, when used along with an appropriate GPS
application, could be of great help to us. If maps of specific locations --
particularly of locations not listed in standard maps -- are uploaded along
with their latitude and longitude, we could add them to our GPS application.
We could thus reduce our dependence on standard maps such as the ones
provided by Wayfinder a great deal.

Mashups are gaining popularity by the day

Sruthi Krishnan

Imagination, only limit to use of this technology

CHENNAI: In Bangalore, a group of citizens scoured news reports every day
and marked places where accidents occurred on a map. In the daily newspaper,
there
is always a mention of an accident or two. And over a period of time, they
had a map sprinkled with accident-related data. Patterns began to emerge and
items in a newspaper that were seemingly unrelated, started making sense
when put together.

Somewhere around 2006, a whole lot of mapping platforms emerged, says
Pradeep B.V, who loves roaming the streets of Bangalore on his cycle. Apart
from
street and road information, which could be used for driving directions,
maps could be used to show other kind of information, he says. You could
translate
the same technology to a different domain.

You can create a 'mashup' - a website that has data from two different
sources. One source is the map, with geographical or spatial information. On
top
of it, you can add anything - show areas where jobs are available, tell your
friends where the best ice creams are made or add live-videos of street
corners.
Only imagination is the limit to the information you can add on a map.

All you need to remember is that the information should have a where
component.

These mashups are gaining popularity by the day. GoogleMapsMania - the name
of the blog run by Keir Clarke, a freelance web developer based in London,
says
it all. Keir scours the internet looking for Google Maps mashups and he also
gets four to five submissions on email every day. The blog
(http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com)
was started in 2005 and Keir took over in February 2008.

If you have a little Javascript experience, it is easy to create a Google
Maps Mashups with the programming interfaces provided, says Keir. A lot of
third-party
map creation tools are there for which you don't need any experience to
create a mashup. You can also create a mashup using Google My Maps, which
lets
you click on a map and add text, pictures or videos.

There are lots of real-time maps as well as those that show the real-time
location of trains, planes and boats. These are really amazing as you can
actually
see the vehicles moving live on a map, says Keir. Wikimapia
(http://wikimapia.org) is perhaps the biggest mashup, he adds. It is
essentially a wiki on
a map, so people can click on places they know and give information on the
location.

Mashups can be created by groups too, thanks to social networking
technology. Pradeep is part of a firm called Mapunity (
www.mapunity.in
), which is a social networking community that allows people to share
spatially or geographically linked information. Whole lot of communities
have information
with a 'where' component, he says.

[AI] A strange issue when routing Jaws cursor to PC

Hi folks :)

I've run into a strange problem since a week or so. Whenever I press
insert and num pad minus to route Jaws to PC, Jaws doesn't speak
anything - it doesn't even say route jaws to PC. and when I press
uparrow or downarrow it only says: start button mozilla firefox 7:57
AM or whichever program is open. I tried insert + R, I tried repairing
Jaws, I tried re-installing Jaws, I tried defragmenting my hard disk, I
tried chkdsk, I tried configuring Jaws for XP (as specified in Jaws help
documentation), and to do something little out-of-the-box, I caused the
jfw.exe to run in compatibility mode, but all to no avail. I'd
appreciate if you could let me know in case I missed on anything.

[AI] Stem cell therapy 'to cure blindness'

Stem cell therapy 'to cure blindness'

London (PTI): A ray of hope for the visually impaired! Scientists have made a
major scientific breakthrough by developing a stem cell therapy to cure
blindness.

A team in Britain has developed the treatment which involves replacing a layer
of degenerated cells with new ones created from embryonic stem cells to cure
age-related muscular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness.

According to the scientists, it will become a routine, one-hour procedure that
will be generally available in six to seven years' time, 'The Sunday Times'
reported.

Embryonic stem cells have the ability to develop into all types of body tissue.
And under the new therapy, embryonic stem cells are transformed into replicas
of the missing cells.

They are then placed on an artificial membrane that's inserted in the back of
the retina.

In fact, laboratory trials completed by the team have shown that stem cells can
prevent blindness in rodents with a similar disease to AMD. They have also
successfully tested elements of the technology in pigs.

Lead scientist Prof Pete Coffey of University College London said the treatment
would take less than an hour, so it really could be considered as an outpatient
procedure. We are trying to get it out as a common therapy.

Added team member Peng Khaw of Moorfields Hospital: This shows that stem cell
therapy is coming of age. It offers great hope for many sufferers around
the world who cannot be treated with conventional treatment.

Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical research company, is to back it
financially to bring the new therapy to patients.

This is a major development because of the size of the partner. We need a big
pharmaceutical company to scale it up. This will ensure that the therapy
gets through to clinical trials in a safe and effective manner, Prof Coffey
said.

[AI] Smart card material to help computers switch on instantly

2009-04-19 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Sunday, April 19, 2009 : 0940 Hrs
Sci. Tech.

Washington (IANS): Ultra-thin ferro-electric materials used in smart cards will
soon make computers more efficient by enabling them to switch on instantly.

Smart cards rely on ferro-electric materials to instantly reveal and update
stored information. For example, in ATMs. A computer with this capability could
instantly provide information and other data to the user.

Researchers led by Darrell Schlom at Cornell University took strontium titanate
and deposited it on silicon, the main component of most semiconductors.
Schlom and his team then integrated circuits in such a way that the silicon
squeezed it into a ferro-electric state.

For computer users, it could mean no more waiting for the operating system to
come online or to access memory slowly from the hard drive.

Several hybrid transistors have been proposed specifically with ferroelectrics
in mind, said Schlom. By creating a ferroelectric directly on silicon,
we are bringing this possibility closer to realization.

More research is needed to achieve a ferroelectric transistor that would make
instant on computing a reality. An important step, however, is to have the
materials in direct contact, free of intervening reaction layers said a Cornell
release.

These findings were published in Science.

Added team member Peng Khaw of Moorfields Hospital: This shows that stem cell
therapy is coming of age. It offers great hope for many sufferers around the
world who cannot be treated with conventional treatment.
Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical research company, is to back it
financially to bring the new therapy to patients.
This is a major development because of the size of the partner. We need a big
pharmaceutical company to scale it up. This will ensure that the therapy gets
through to clinical trials in a safe and effective manner, Prof Coffey said.

 Subject: [Blindmath] MathDaisy 1.0 Released

[AI] on line portal for PWDs

2009-04-19 Thread Nirmita Narasimhan

Dear Mukesh,
a colleague of mine who is an intellectual property lawyer in Chennai has
already been working on this for a year now. Many of us have been helping
him with building the e content bit of the web site for visually challenged
and gathering all the material wherever we can get it. The content section
is called readable and should go live by the end of the month. We have a lot
of stuff we are going to put, but since the cataloging and organising bit is
taking time, we are going live with whatever we have right now,. Eventually
this is to have all the education, entertainment and anything which would
be of interest to persons. VI people would have to log in and certify that
they are vi and then they would have access to the reading material. We want
this to be peer driven and people to upload their materials themselves and
create a vibrant culture of sharing. The web site is called inclusive
planet and it would be great if all those who want could help with the beta
testing to see if the site is completely accessible and then of course start
using the material and uploading actively.

Cheers, Nirmita

Soon, sat nav that directs guide dogs for blind people
ANISaturday, April 18, 2009 15:26 IST
London: A British boffin has invented a revolutionary sat nav that directs
guide dogs for blind people.

The 500-pound gizmo, which will be launched this summer, clips on to the
dog's harness and vibrates on the left or right side to tell the handler
which direction to go in.

The blind user announces their destination into a sat nav microphone. The
vibrating receiver then indicates how to steer the dog.

Product design student Jason Perkins developed Peepo after working with
the Cardiff Institute for the Blind for a year, reports The Sun.

Jason, 34, who studies at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff,
said: It gives blind people complete freedom. They can use it to navigate
safely to new places.

I wanted to create something that would have a life-changing effect but
would also draw on the unique skills of the guide dog.

Blind Jane McCann, 39, from Cardiff, who tested Peepo, said: I have small
children, so it's difficult to concentrate on the kids and directions at
the same time. This was easy to use and life-enhancing.
