As i said yesterday, i did talk to the maker of this device on phone for about 22 minutes and told him about our views on the same. he said that the device with recording ability will soon be out. he also told that their intention is just to assist blind students living in rural areas with their studies. he admitted that there are much advanced devices in developped countries and they are not interested in any international market. it's good that at last, he agreed that more hours of recording can be achieved in MP3 format using the memory card of same storage capacity (2 GB here). but again, he said the copyright thing etc and tried to prove that wave, being an open format, in particular bitrate is feasible and 60 hours capacity is quite enough to cover all subjects of a particular standard. even if it is lacking in many things, what i appriciated was the thing that it is so far used by about 75 students and their study life is much easier now in terms of using a small instrument with a card, no need of carrying whole lot of cassettes with them wherever they go. another strong point i felt was its power backup of 8 hours. this is quite useful in remote areas where electricity (or rather, scarcity of it) is big hurdle in their studies. It might be a good idea for you to contact agencies that offer career counseling. That way you can have them do a comprehensive test to identify your apptitude. You may also want to contact Enable India in this regard. They may already have a few tests in place. Dear All, It is with a sense of shock and a heavy heart that the XRCVC is sharing the painful news of the untimely demise of Fareda Banja. She passed away suddenly in the hospital following a very short illness early this morning. In the little over one year that we knew her, Fareda brought a sense of energy, joy and productivity to the Centre. In this hour of grief for everybody and especially her family, our hearts and prayers go out to her son Rohan, her parents, brother, sister as also the family of her in-laws. All of them were just picking up the pieces after the gruesome demise of Fareda’s husband Vijay Banja in the terrorist attack on 26/11 at the Taj, Mumbai. At such a moment, we are at a loss for words. All we can do is pray for the peace of her soul and for the Lord to give strength to all the members of her family to withstand the irreparable loss. CHECKLIST TO BE DISABLED-FRIENDLY... * Include an 'ALT' attribute for all images and image map hotspots * Users should be able to tell where links are taking them without having to read the surrounding text * Text links are distinguished from regular text in a way that is consistent, and does not rely solely on colour * Avoid using frames in web pages * Provide accessible alternatives for interactive and multimedia content The world over, as new websites are created, countries like the US, the UK, Canada and Australia have enacted legislation to make it mandatory for creators of web pages to follow the minimum standards for accessibility adopted by those countries. Access to information is mandated by the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) that India has ratified and also by the Disability Act, 1995. Yet, for the estimated 60 million disabled people like Kumar in India, these are major hurdles to be crossed. For one, the estimated 5,000 government sites and portals (with the exception of a couple of sites like india.gov.in and bharat.gov.in) are not fully accessible to them. This, of course, does not include the thousands of websites run by Indian companies which do not comply with Web Access Guidelines (WCAG 2.0). National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) Director Javed Abidi points out that even the Common Admission Test (CAT) for entry to the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) - which will be a computer-based test this year - ...completely ignores the interests of students with disabilities, who will face a great deal of difficulty appearing for it. From paper to online exams, disabled people will still be dependent on humans rather than technology. The Indian government, though, appears to be finally waking up to these problems, admits Abidi. India's draft National Policy on Electronic Accessibility (NPEA) is a case in point. It acknowledges that though the electronic age can benefit persons with disabilities, persons with disabilities are being excluded and thereby facing discrimination. For example, a person with visual impairment can't access an ATM; a person with hearing impairment can't enjoy TV programmes; and physically challenged people cannot access kiosks at railway stations. The Department of Information Technology, too, convened a meeting late last month to discuss the draft NPEA, as prepared by the NCPEDP along with BarrierBreak Technologies. He learned typing then completed his Diploma Course in Electronics wherein he learnt to repair electronic goods. Later on he switched over to tanning of leather which was his traditional business. With the help of his elder brother who read books on tanning he learned about the trade. Soon, he mastered the art of leather tanning. Finally in the year 1995 he formed his first self owned Leather tanning business, and became a renowned tannery owner in Kanpur. Repairing electronics and tanning leather was not enough so he enrolled himself in Computer Education, and learnt programming and got himself into the IT field wherein he set up many Computer Training Centres in U.P. in the year 2000. He also became the first blind person to pass all 4 Certification of Microsoft. Post setting up of his above two businessess, he further went into learning about detergents and cosmetic products and developed his own unique formulas in detergent. He also venturmed in real estate and insurance sector. Inspite of having less education he appears to be a very accomplished and learned individual. He is well read and avid chess player. Besides his business abilities he is also a good swimmer, rides a bike, drives a car and plays the Harmonium. He forms a company 'Great Entertainments' and produce the film 'Shadow' in which he performed thrilling stunts like any other able bodied actor. Naseer delivered a very motivating speech at the Prize Distribution function for the Dance Competition and generously announced a 5 days free tour to Thailand for two persons for the 1st winner and 3 days free tour at any destination in India for the runners up. Very impressive and interesting. A review of his film is as follows: SHADOW - A unique effort I watched this movie yesterday. This movie was in the news everywhere even before its release since it was the first time a blind person was doing the role of a non-disabled person in the film. It was said that despite his blindness, producer and actor Naseer Khan has done amazing stunts which are considered very difficult even for the sighted. All this had aroused my curiosity and I was searching for an opportunity for watching this film. In my assessment it is a very average film; most critics have rated it as a grade B film. The film has no great story; it has all the masala Bollywood is famous for. Songs, dance, beautiful girls, glamour and drama. Naseer Khan has tried to put everything in the film which will interest the average film goer in small towns. Naseer Khan's efforts are however remarkable. The fact that he decided to make this film and completed it is amazing. He must have faced so many obstacles and I wonder how many people would have supported his ideas. In my view, Naseer Khan is not a good actor and his acting in the film is very newcomer like. He also does not have great looks but may this does not matter so much as Hemesh Reshamia has been able to achieve so much with baldness and cap. One thing that I wanted to watch out was how a blind person would have managed eye contact and expression despite his blindness. It turned out as I had expected. Naseer Khan had to choose the only option available. He wears flashy goggles in every scene. His eyes cannot be seen through the coloured glasses and this helps in looking non-visually impaired. The story is about a person who after facing great tragedies in his family decides to take revenge in a unique way. He calls it his mission but it does not seem convincing enough as it unfolds at the end of the film. Naseer Khan has tried to create comedy in a few scenes and surprisingly there is not much romance in this film. He would have been very uncomfortable in romantic scenes with his meagre acting skills I suppose. Anyways, I am full of praise for the grit and determination shown by Naseer Khan and lot can be expected from him in the future.
