[AI] literary web journals

2009-12-14 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Hindu literary review: December 6, 2009

Writers without borders
ANUPAMA RAJU
The Web has been a liberating medium for online literary journals, freed as
they are from production and distribution constraints...

Apart from being easy to produce and distribute, Web journals facilitate faster
dialogue and discussion between readers across the world.

I t has become a cliché: Indian literature is going global. Besides the fact
that international publishers are discovering more Indian talent year after
year, there is a single word that could perhaps explain this delightful
phenomenon: The Internet.
The last five to six years have seen exceptional growth in the power of this
medium with particular reference to what it can do to promote literature.
Indian literary journals on the Web have been silently working to popularise
regional writing in translation, providing a platform for emerging writers, or
simply making the works of contemporary Indian authors accessible to readers
all over the world.
Global reach
A Web journal is literally 'global' due to the Internet, and it easily spans
national and geographical boundaries. "For a print journal to achieve this
would be extremely difficult and expensive," says Surya Rao, Managing Editor,
Muse India, a bi-monthly literary Web journal. Web journals are far less
expensive to produce and distribute. They also facilitate faster dialogue and
discussion between readers across the world.
Online literary journals have been using these strengths to their advantage to
promote a single literary genre like poetry, publish new voices or promote
regional writing in English translation. One such journal is Muse India(
www.museindia.com ), launched in 2005 with the primary objective of showcasing
Indian writing in English and in English translation to a broad-based global
readership. Featuring works from many regional languages of India, Muse
Indiapublishes poetry, short fiction, essays, book reviews and so on. "Besides
presenting the work of more established authors, Muse Indiaconsciously promotes
talented new and young writers," adds Surya Rao.
Well researched
It is particularly heartening to read this journal's theme-based issues that
are meticulously edited and researched. The current issue, for instance,
focuses on Urdu-Hindi literary cultures. This year, the journal has also looked
into significant themes such as medieval Oriya Bhakti poetry, Malayalam
literature and Indian plays. No wonder then that Muse Indiahas around 4,000
registered members from over 35 countries.
Bilingual journals are also doing their bit to highlight the richness of
literature in various languages. Pratilipi( www.pratilipi.in), an online
journal published in Hindi and in English, has been steadily gaining a loyal
readership. Launched just a year ago, this young journal has already published
translations into Hindi and/or English from about 20 Indian and international
languages.
"What we want to do is to help create an online, translative space across
Indian languages," says Rahul Soni, one of the editors of Pratilipi. Striving
to be a multilingual, multi-script magazine that provides a space for
conversation between diverse sorts of writing and writers, Pratilipihas an
impressive line-up of short stories, poems and non-fiction. The editorials are
sharp and the visuals striking.
Readers get a taste of the heady blend of art and literature from Kritya(
www.kritya.in ) too. Published in Hindi and in English, it is India's first
bilingual web journal entirely dedicated to poetry. Launched in 2005, Krityais
edited by the Sahitya Akademi award-winning Hindi poet and scholar, Rati Saxena.
Focus on poetry
What makes Krityaunique is also the way it has been showcasing contemporary
world poetry, besides featuring established and emerging poets from various
corners of India. Saxena has a strong argument for making Krityaa
poetry-focused journal. "Poetry is the most neglected form of literature," she
declares.
Poetry is also seen as a way to reach out - an effective communication tool.
Talking Poetryis a site that is part of 'Open Space', an outreach initiative of
the Center for Communication and Development Studies (CCDS), a Pune-based
development research public trust.
Edited by well-known poet Priya Sarukkai Chabria and launched about four years
ago, Talking Poetry( http://www.openspaceindia.org/poets_speak.htm) is an
extension of the CCDS initiative that reaches out to citizens by creatively
using different outreach strategies and processes such as workshops, public
lectures, seminars, trainings and festivals.
Sarukkai explains that her aim was to showcase the diverse range of poetic
expression - forms, textures and nuances, language usage and experimentation to
truly make this an 'open space' where readers can reflect and arrive at their
own conclusions.
It is the same freedom that one come

This is a text reading program for your mobile phone at an affordable price.

Install it to your Talks enabled phone, take a snapshot of a page of text, a
box, a packet, anything with text on it, and it will be read to you, using
its own very clear text to speech engine. You can also read the output with
Talks too.

The cost is £75.00 plus VAT if applicable.

[AI] Easily Backup & Import Your Wireless Network Settings in Windows 7

2009-12-14 Thread srikanth kanuri
Easily Backup & Import Your Wireless Network Settings in Windows 7

This article was written by Ciprian from
7 Tutorials,
an excellent blog covering how to use Windows 7.

One of the biggest annoyances when setting up wireless networks is
remembering the security key and typing it correctly so that you can
connect all laptops
and netbooks to it. Windows 7 makes it easy to export your wireless
settings from one machine to another.

The backup of the wireless networks settings can be easily done from
Windows 7, and the settings can be saved to a USB stick, and then the
settings can
be imported on laptops & netbooks running Windows XP, Windows Vista
and Windows 7.

How to Save Your Wireless Network Settings

First, open the Network and Sharing Center. You can do this by
clicking on the wireless network symbol from the taskbar and clicking
on ‘Open Network and
Sharing Center’. An alternative would be to go to Control Panel ->
Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center.

On the left side of the Network and Sharing Center window, click on
the ‘Manage wireless networks’ link.

In the Manage Wireless Networks window you will see a list with all
wireless networks to which you have connected in the past. Double
click on the one which
interests you.

Now you will see a window with all its properties. In order to save
them on a flash drive, click on the bottom link which says ‘Copy this
network profile
to a USD flash drive’.

The Copy Network Settings wizard will now start. Insert the USB flash
drive, wait until it is detected and the Next button is no longer
gray.

The copying process will take only a few seconds. When done, click on Close.

If you will look on your USB flash drive you will see a setupSNK.exe
file and a SMRTNTKY folder. Make sure you don’t delete them from the
memory stick.

How to Import Your Wireless Network Settings

First, plug in the USB flash drive in the laptop where you want to
import the settings and run the setupSNK.exe file. When the Wireless
Network Setup Wizard
launches, click on Yes.

The settings will be imported in seconds and when receiving the
notification below, click on OK and start using the wireless network.

This procedure is very helpful for both public and hidden wireless
networks. Instead of typing long authentication keys, it is easier to
plug in an USB
memory stick and run a setup file.

Srikanth

Re: [AI] Preparing for IAS: may please advice

2009-12-14 Thread ajay arora
Dear Madhav,
Any examination is cracked through a winning strategy. The strategy is
made through a thorough involvement in the examination process. Only
seriousness could sharpen your observation and discriminative powers.
Observation powers to choose what is required and discriminative
powers to leave what is not required. Putting them in other words, a
strategy is made hearing on the knowledge of picking all that
information which is essential and discarding all those which are not.
Once this is achieved, civil services exam is a smooth Cakewalk! So an
honest and serious involvement is necessary. Involvement thus requires
studying with full interest and concentration. This leads to a firm
grasp over the subject and its various dimensions. The next stage
pertains to going through previous year question papers looking at the
questions and the perspective through which the same are asked. This
either confirms your way of looking at the subject or kindles all
together new dimension to analyse the subject when revisited. Those
aspirants and candidates who develop this say the UPSC examination is
the easiest one!
Three other factors, have time and again proved that preparation of
Civil services exam and finally achieving the goal is rather an easy
job. The three factors are syllabus, planning and implementation.
If you look at the syllabus of the Civil Services Exam and the
question asked in the exam, you may well realize that the overall
thrust of the Civil Services exam is academic. It is also equally true
that the academic abilities looked for in the Civil Servants or the
Civil Services aspirants are not too narrow in scope. The academic
ability tests are broad and liberal in scope. A simple graduate can be
a candidate. A simple graduate without an honours degree and a liberal
outlook who has taken interest not only in scholastic activities but
broadly in every sphere of life and society is an ideal candidate. The
Civil Services Exam doesn't look for the scholars, although it is
quite a different matter that even lecturers, research scholars
pursuing doctorate degrees and doctorates appear for this exam in
sufficient numbers.
The Civil Services Exam requirement never bothers you with your past
academic performance. No matter how many times you may have failed or
passed with poor divisions, it would create no hindrance to your
appearance in the Civil Services Exam. All you require to appear for
the Civil Services Exam is a plan graduation degree in any division.
But the thrust of the Civil Services Exam is academics. Its
orientation is academic. The question papers in the Exam are akin to
exhaustive academic variety. The papers including the compulsory and
optional papers give the impression of an exhaustive demand to be met
only by a serious academically oriented candidate.
The two-hour essay paper is quite strenuous. To write such essays as
required in the exam you need to work consistently. Apart from a
certain degree of perfection in language, you need to be sound on the
front of information as well. Your academic background will be found
to be of much use here.
The two papers of General Studies are quite rigorous. You need to be
well informed on a number of topics. You must be well versed in
certain subjects like Indian History, India Geography, Indian Polity,
Science and Technology in India etc. to do well in this paper. And
remember this is only a paper of it. Besides, you must be well versed
in the current events of national and international importance,
environment and ecology and international organizations etc.
Somethings never change, they stand the test of time. Like the craze
for civil services. Opening up of the economy has created plenty of
attractive job opportunities for today's youth, but none can match the
aura of civil services. The lure of power, being a part of
decision-making, opportunity to serve people in different sectors is
too great to resist. Hence, civil services continue to attract the
brightest of the mind.
And I think that the reason for this popularity is not difficult to be
seen! Civil Servants get the best pay and perks package. Some of the
civil servants enjoy a high media profile despite being wary of
publicity. They enjoy enormous clout over people and decision making
in the corridors of power. An aura of power and glamour surrounds
their personality.
My subjects are public administration and history. If you require any
material for civil services, particularly for GS, Public
administration and history, I can certainly help you out.
REGARDS
Ajay Arora

Re: [AI] internet provider for limited time

2009-12-14 Thread Amar Jain

Bhaiya:
Depends on your usage. If you only wants for mail checking etc, then no need
of going for any other connection because as you have airtel mobile. They
have got various plans with them, and they even offer unlimmitted gprs in
INR25 but on limited numbers. So please check with customercare if it is
available on your number or not.
But if you want high speed connection, then you can go for tata or reliance
photon pro or net connect respectively, but as subramani sir said, they have
got monthly subscription plans.

I don't know weather MTNL offers the things like EVDO cards.
Amar Jain.

Hai:

You may choose Reliance or other data cards, but the problem is even if
you don't use you will have to pay the minimum monthly subscription to
maintain the connection.

>From the Braille Monitor, December 2009.

 A knfbReader for Christmas?
 by Michael Hingson
 **
From the Associate Editor: In the midst of the holiday season, a
fortunate few may receive a knfbReader Mobile as a gift. Others may be
saving to purchase this useful technology with a tax refund in early
2010
or may be looking at a number of alternative funding sources as the new
year approaches. Michael Hingson, director of the NFB's national
knfbReader
Mobile distributorship, has asked that we provide some updated
information
about the new phone that supports this technology and publish
testimonials
of several satisfied knfbReader Mobile users. Here is the information:
 **
Since its introduction in January 2008, the knfbReader Mobile has
become an integral part of the lives of thousands of blind people
throughout the world. This is a portable device consisting of software
and
specific cell phones that are powerful enough not only to take a high-
quality picture of a printed page but also to process that image,
recognize
the characters on the page, and read the page out loud to the blind
user.
The Reader provides a level of reading independence that blind people
have
never before experienced.
We who are blind are finding new ways to use the knfbReader Mobile
to
make us more productive on the job and in our personal lives by reading
what we want, where we want. Because the hardware platform used by the
knfbReader Mobile is a commercially available cell phone, the Reader is
so
portable that people are taking it everywhere, including restaurants,
classrooms, the office, libraries, and almost anywhere print is found.
The most common cell phone used to power the knfbReader Mobile has
been the Nokia N82. It has served users well and has helped make the
reader
affordable. Earlier this year Nokia announced that the N82 was being
discontinued and would not be manufactured after June 30, 2009. At the
same
time Nokia announced the introduction of a new cell phone, the Nokia
N86.
After considerable testing and evaluation by knfbReading Technologies,
it
was determined that the N86 would be a great replacement for the N82. In
fact it has some features that may make it a better hardware platform as
time goes on. Here is a brief description of some of the features of the
N86 and the ways they contrast with those of the N82:
The Nokia N86 was introduced as a high-end multimedia cell phone
with
the ability to take clear high-resolution pictures as well as to record
high quality audio. It incorporates an eight-mega-pixel camera instead
of
the five-mega-pixel camera contained in the Nokia N82. The N86 camera
also
contains a wider angle lens, which may in the future permit taking
pictures
of larger pages. The new hardware incorporates a dual LED flash instead
of
the xenon flash of the Nokia N82. Typically dual LED flash systems are
not
as bright and have not provided as high quality an image for good
optical
character recognition. The flash on the new system, however, is bright
enough to provide excellent character recognition and to permit the
elimination of the special polarizer filters that were required on the
Nokia N82.
The Nokia N86 uses a faster processor, which means that the time
between taking the picture and speaking the text is shorter. It takes no
more than twelve seconds for the new hardware to take a picture,
recognize
the characters, and begin reading aloud.
One of the most exciting features of the Nokia N86 is that its
keys
are more tactile. The basic function keys are larger and more raised
than
those of the Nokia N82. The new phone is a slider phone rather than a
candy
bar phone, descriptions that describe the shape of the N86 and the N82.
In
the N82 the function keys and the number keypad are on the front panel
of
the unit. In the N86 the keys to operate the phone are on the front
panel,
while the keypad is accessed by sliding the entire top of the phone out
of
the way, revealing a keypad containing much larger number keys.
Other features of the new hardware include nearly eight gigabytes
of
internal storage as opposed to the two gigabytes of storage available on
a
micro SD card, which comes as part of the Nokia N82. A micro-SD slot is
also available on the Nokia N86, should the user wish to add additional
storage. The extra memory capacity means that more and larger files can
be
stored on the new knfbReader Mobile hardware.
The price of the N86 is a bit higher than its predecessor. We
still
have some Nok

Hi Mahendra,

Not sure what would be your need; but if it's limited say something like
checking your emails and surfing a bit, then you may buy a pre-paid voucher
for dial-up connection that you can use with your MTNL landline.

Hope this helps.

[AI] BSNL prepaid online recharge

Dear Access Indians,

It is been a long time I have posted a question, hope you are doing fine in
this festive season .

Coming to my question I am trying to recharge my bsnl mobile number through
BSNL portal I am unable to do that, if any one of our access Indians used
this facility could help me in this regards, I will be deeply thankful.

I am unable to recharge from my bank account (ICICI) because I an not
getting the Tamil nadu circle in the portal so my other option is bsnl.co.in
website which I am unable to do that but there is an option to do that, I
have even contacted the customer care center they are also giving the same
steps only but no use, so requesting our friends to help me in this regards.

Thank you ,
