[AI] Artificial corneas restore sight
Artificial corneas restore sight Revolution In Petri Dish: Twin Breakthroughs Raise Hope For Millions London: Lab-grown artificial corneas have been transplanted into patients’ eyes for the first time, offering hope to millions of partially sighted people. The new technique involves growing human tissue or collagen in the lab and then shaping it, using a contact lens mould. Damaged and scarred tissue from the front of the eye is then removed and the “biosynthetic” replacement is stitched in its place, reports the Telegraph. Ultimately, existing cells and nerves in the eye grow over the artificial cornea, incorporating it fully into the eye. Globally, diseases that lead to clouding of the cornea affect more than 10 million people, making them the most common cause of blindness. The first trials of the operation have shown that it is just as successful as live tissue transplantation and in some cases patients have had their sight fully restored. May Griffiths, of Linkoping University, Sweden, who led the study, said: “We were very excited by the results. The study is the first to show that an artificially fabricated cornea can integrate with the human eye and stimulate regeneration.” “With further research, this approach could help restore sight to millions of people who are waiting for a donated human cornea for transplantation,” Griffiths added. The cornea is a vulnerable shield or lens protecting the eye and plays a key role in creating vision. Patients did not experience any rejection reaction or require long-term immune suppression, which are serious sideeffects associated with the use of human donor tissue. IANS NEW VISION: Researcher May Griffith displays a biosynthetic cornea that can be implanted into the eye to restore sight SK Voice your thoughts in the blog to discuss the Rights of persons with disability bill at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/blog.htm To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Great. This will indeed reduce the waitting period for getting the donated cornia. [AI] HAPPY 35TH BIRTHDAY MICROSOFT
No one would have thought a college dropout and his mate could change the way we live and work forever, but here we are. We celebrate 35 years of Microsoft It's spring 1975. Margaret Thatcher defeats Edward Heath for the leadership of the Conservative Party, the Bay City Rollers spend six weeks at number one with 'Bye Bye Baby' and 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' is the year's big hit at the box office. That same spring, Harvard dropout Bill Gates and his schoolfriend Paul Allen set up a tiny business to write software for a new microcomputer called the Altair 8800. Their first product is the Altair Basic language. At first the company is called Micro-soft, then MicroSoft, and finally Microsoft. From these modest beginnings, the firm went on to give birth to an entire industry, change the way we live and work and become one of the largest software companies on the planet, creating countless millionaires along the way. As Microsoft celebrates its 35th anniversary, we look at the best, worst and most notable moments, products, decisions and people in the company's history. SAVVIEST BUSINESS DEAL In November 1980, Microsoft signed an agreement with IBM to provide an operating system (OS) for the still-secret IBM Personal Computer, to be released in 1981. The OS would ultimately be called PC-DOS, a rebranding of Microsoft's MS-DOS. Microsoft didn't actually write MS-DOS; instead, it paid Seattle Computer to rewrite its own QDOS for the purpose, without telling it to whom the OS would be sold. Microsoft went on to use its relationship with IBM as a springboard to develop its worldwide dominance in business OSes. MOST SURPRISING INVESTMENT In August 1997, rival company Apple was in desperate need of cash. Microsoft came to the rescue, buying $150m in stock. As part of the deal, Microsoft agreed to continue to develop Microsoft Office for Mac, and Apple agreed to bundle Internet Explorer (IE) with Mac OS. Both parts of the agreement have since fallen by the wayside: IE for Mac is gone, and Microsoft is no longer required to update Office for Mac (although it usually does some time after the Windows version is updated). SPLASHIEST PRODUCT LAUNCH Microsoft launched Windows 95 in 1995 with a $300m advertising campaign that was said to bethe biggest in history. Microsoft is rumoured to-have spent $12m on Windows 95's theme tune -The Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up'. It also draped a 300 feet banner over Toronto's CN Tower, paid-for a print run of 1.5 million copies of The Times and distributed them for free, andhad the Empire State Building lit up in Microsoft's corporate colours. MOST HATED OS Windows Vista's 2006 release proved to be far more of a fiasco than Windows Me or MS-DOS 4. Following a five-year gap between the release of XP and Vista, people had high expectations. Unfortunately, Vista was bedevilled by hardware incompatibilities at launch, it wouldn't run on older hardware and many people disliked its resource-hungry user interface. Making matters worse, many PCs that were labelled 'Vista Capable' couldn't run the full version of the OS. SMARTEST SOFTWARE BUNDLE Clearly the smartest software bundling move Microsoft ever made was combining Word, Excel and PowerPoint into Microsoft Office - for the Mac in 1989 and Windows in 1990. Microsoft Word was released in 1983 for MS-DOS, in 1985 for the Mac and in 1989 for Windows. Excel was launched in 1985 for the Mac and in 1987 for Windows. PowerPoint for the Mac was released in 1987 and in 1990 for Windows. MOST ANNOYING PRODUCTIVITY TOOL Microsoft launched Office 97 in November 1996. It featured the Office Assistant, otherwise known as Clippy, an animated character in the form of a paper clip. Clippy was supposed to help people get work done more easily by offering tips from the help database that related to the task being performed. But Clippy was intrusive and intensely annoying. Microsoft turned off the feature by default in Office XP and removed it altogether in Office 2007. SNEAKIEST SOFTWARE In mid-2006, Microsoft began rolling out Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) as a 'high-priority' download along with its regular Windows Update service. However, the update had nothing to do with the PC's security. WGA is Microsoft's anti-piracy software. It warns people if they don't have a genuine version of Windows installed, and can even prevent some updates from completing. BIGGEST EMBARRASSMENT When you use formulae in Excel, you expect it to do the maths correctly. But in September 2007, an Excel 2007 bug left Microsoft execs red-faced: it was apparently unable to do simple multiplication. If a formula resulted in the number 65,535 or 65,536, for example, Excel would display the result 100,000. The problem wasn't that Excel couldn't add up, according to the company; rather, it was a display issue. Microsoft fixed the bug, and Excel has known its multiplication tables - and how to display them - ever since. WORST
[AI] Geolocation: Keeping track of your friends
Able to pinpoint your location and relay it to other users, the latest wave of mobile social-networking apps add a new dimension to 'following' friends. But Daniel Ionescu has some privacy concerns Whereas Facebook wants to know What's on your mind? and Twitter asks What's happening?, the burning question for the next wave of social-networking sites is Where are you? And services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite and Loopt want you to use your smartphone to answer it. With a GPS-enabled smartphone such as the Apple iPhone, Google Nexus One or RIM BlackBerry, you can let your friends know where you are, find places recommended by people you know or check in remotely at clubs, bars and restaurants. How it works Geolocation apps typically do two things: they report your location to other users and they associate real-world places with your location. Versions that run on mobile devices provide a richer experience than their desktop counterparts, since the data that's relevant to you changes with your current location. Smartphones use a GPS chip to communicate with satellites and calculate your exact position, which Google Maps et al can then pinpoint on a map. When a GPS signal is unavailable, geolocation apps can use information from telecom towers to work out your approximate position. Some geolocation systems use a combination of both technologies and, in some cases, local Wi-Fi networks too; this arrangement is known as assisted GPS (A-GPS). Provided the sky is fairly clear, the geolocation app on your phone can ascertain your position reasonably accurately. It's less accurate indoors and in built-up areas, however; for the time being you may have to select your location manually. The first wave of apps Several startup companies offer geolocation services - and some, such as Foursquare, reach hundreds of thousands of users. Not only do these services let you share your location with your friends, but they also bring a social gaming element to the table. Foursquare ( 4sq.com) works with iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Palm (WebOS) phones. If there's no separate app for your smartphone, you can use the Foursquare mobile site instead ( foursquare.com/mobile). Foursquare refers to announcing your location - and thus telling your friends where they can find you - as 'checking in'. You can check into cafes, bars, restaurants, parks, offices and pretty much anywhere you like. Once your friends know where you are, they can recommend places for you to go or things for you to do and see nearby. To keep it fun, the service gives you points for each check-in; in time you can also earn various badges that track your progress towards Foursquare elitehood. Even cooler, if the service recognises you as the 'mayor' of a location (by virtue of your having visited that place more frequently than anyone else), you're in for some freebies. Foursquare has a list of places that offer special discounts and free drinks to their mayors, or to anyone who has registered a certain number of check-ins at their site. We've not found many, though. Gowalla ( gowalla.com) also works with iPhone, Android, Palm (WebOS) and BlackBerry (Bold, Curve and Storm) handsets. It has a huge database of locations recorded by users. Participants can trade virtual items they collect. Gowalla has worked out several advertising partnerships that enable you to exchange virtual goods for real-life versions. Gowalla recently added a Trips feature (iPhone-only at the moment; Android and WebOS versions coming soon) that lets you recommend up to 20 locations to other Gowalla enthusiasts. Your friends can then complete trips, such as city tours or bar crawls. Brightkite ( brightkite.com) works with iPhone, Android, Palm, Nokia and BlackBerry. This service lets you establish two kinds of social connections: fans (Twitter-like followers) and Facebook-like friends. Aside from sharing your location, you can post messages that friends or fans can respond to with a thumbs up or thumbs down. Brightkite has sliding privacy controls that let you share individual posts with everyone or with friends only; you can also cross-post on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. Like Foursquare and Gowalla, Brightkite uses the check-in system for bars, clubs, museums and the like, and it locates you automatically. Loopt ( loopt.com) combines geolocation with social networking. It's available for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and other phones. It invites you to check into locations and share what you're doing with Facebook and Twitter friends, as well as Loopt friends. Loopt also provides an event directory called Pulse, where you can browse various listings categories for things going on near you, and afterwards leave ratings and tips. Freebies and special offers are available too, indexed from nearby retailers. Last year, Twitter introduced its own geolocation application programming interface (API), which lets third-party developers

[AI] Union Cabinet approved Direct Tax Code(DTC)
Union Cabinet approved Direct Tax Code(DTC) Posted: 26 Aug 2010 11:23 AM PDT Direct Tax Code gets nod Paving the way for radical reform and simplification in the Direct Tax system the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the much-talked about Direct Tax Code (DTC) Bill proposing to provide more Income Tax relief to salaried class. The DTC Bill, which seeks to replace the archaic Income Tax Act, 1961, proposes to raise the Income Tax exemption limit from existing Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs Two lakh, highly placed sources said. The Income Tax exemption limit for senior citizens is proposed to be raised to Rs 2.5 lakh. Under the moderate tax slab suggested in the DTC Bill the government proposes tax rate of 10 per cent for income between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, 20 per cent for income between Rs 5 lakh - Rs 10 lakh and 30 per cent for income over Rs 10 lakh. Currently the Income Tax rate is 10 per cent on income above Rs 1.6 lakh and upto Rs 5 lakh, 20 per cent on income above Rs 5 lakh and upto Rs 8 lakh and 30 per cent on income above Rs 8 lakh. The first draft of the DTC bill had suggested 10 per cent tax on income between Rs 1.60 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, 20 per cent on income between Rs 10 and Rs 25 lakh and 30 per cent beyond that. The DTC Bill proposes to levy Corporate Tax at 30 per cent and there will be no cess and surcharge on it, sources said. The DTC Bill will be introduced in the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament. The Cabinet at its hour-long meeting chaired by the Prime Minister discussed at length various provisions of the DTC Bill, which will seek to bring about radical reforms and simplification in direct tax structure including the Income Tax rates and exemptions. The overall thrust of the DTC Bill will be on bringing about simplification of direct tax system including personal Income Tax and Corporate Tax with “an in-built bias” in favour of moderation of tax rates, sources close to the preparation of draft legislation said. Provisions of the DTC Bill stipulating the tax rates in direct tax front including Income tax and Corporate Tax will come into effect once it the legislation is approved by both houses of Parliament. The government plans to implement various provisions of the DTC Bill with effect from April One 2011. It is learnt that the government is likely to introduce the DTC Bill either tomorrow or next Monday in both houses of Parliament. After its introduction the draft DTC will be sent to Select Committee of both houses for scrutiny. After examining the recommendations of the Select Committee the government will move the DTC Bill for approval of Parliament in the Winter Session. Later, talking to newspersons, the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, “The whole objective is that a plethora of exemptions will be limited. (Income) tax slabs will be three. Rate of taxes will be taken in the schedule so that they need not be changed every year,” he said. The Finance Ministry submitted the draft DTC Bill for consideration of the Cabinet after examining responses from various stake holders including trade, industry and corporate sector. [AI] CENTRAL SECTOR SCHEME FOR INTEREST SUBSIDY ON EDUCATIONAL LOANS
CENTRAL SECTOR SCHEME FOR INTEREST SUBSIDY ON EDUCATIONAL LOANS Posted: 26 Aug 2010 06:43 AM PDT PRESS INFORMATION BUREAU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA CENTRAL SECTOR SCHEME FOR INTEREST SUBSIDY ON EDUCATIONAL LOANS New Delhi: August 18, 2010 The Central Government has launched a new Central Scheme to provide full interest subsidy during the period of moratorium on educational loans for students belonging to economically weaker sections (with parental family income from all sources of less than Rs.4.5 lakh annually) from scheduled banks under the Educational Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) for pursuing courses of studies in professional/technical streams from recognized institutions in India. The Scheme is effective for all IBA approved educational loans sanctioned to eligible students in respect of courses of studies in technical and professional streams from recognized institutions in India, from the academic year 2009-10. This Scheme is an overlay of the existing IBA Education Loan Scheme. The modalities have been finalized in consultation with the Indian Banks’ Association and circulated to all member banks for implementation. Under the Scheme, proof of income is required to be certified by authorities to be designated by the State Governments. Accordingly, the Ministry has written to all Chief Secretaries of States/Union Territories to intimate the designated authority / authorities (at the District/Sub-District/Block, etc. levels) to the District Level Consultative Committee (DLCC) so that banking authorities at the branch level where students would be approaching for availing the benefit of the scheme would be aware of the same. Eligible students who wish to avail of the benefits of the Scheme can approach the respective bank branch from where they availed of the education loan and complete the necessary formalities including obtaining the certification in respect of annual family income from the competent authority at the Block/Tehsil/District Level, so that the individual student accounts could be credited with the interest due on the loan for the academic year 2009-10 onwards. Canara Bank is the nodal Bank, for the member Banks of IBA, for claiming reimbursement of interest credited to student accounts. The details of the Scheme as well as the above communications are available on the website of thisMinistry at www.education.nic.in The Scheme is effective from 1.4.2009. [AI] [Ai] [From: Nimita] Song For Teacher's Day
Hi dear friends, writing after quite a long time. Hope all of you are rocking. Wish everybody a very happy teacher's day in advance. Friends, our college is organizing a very special function on this day, for which I need the Hindi non-film song, Asatya Ke Andheron Se Hame Gyaan Ke Ujaalon Ki Ore Lae Chalo. But unfortunately I don't know its particulars, such as the singer, writer, composer or even the name of the album. Any idea about all this? please let me know so that I can be able to search for it. If any friend has this song in his or her collection, please upload it and send me the download link. Thanks in advance. With best regards, Nimita Sharma. Hi The sidebar which has most of the features Epic offers does not seem to be accessible. It is like Firefox because it has been built on that platform. M.
